Holy Soul's POV
"You cannot be here!" The angel tried to stop me from reaching the gates of hell. "If you go down there, there is no guarantee that you could go back up!"
I removed the angel's grip from my wrist but the angel is much stronger. I stared at the pits of cold ice and darkness. If I look closely, I could see the demons reaching out for me. I reached out my free hand towards them. "Take me."
The demons cheered as if I had just given them permission to destroy the world. They grew taller and bigger and suddenly, I was consumed by darkness.
I opened my eyes which I don't know when I closed them.
No souls really go to hell. It's just a way to scare people off. There will always be forgiveness…or so I thought.
"The Holy Soul, in front of me?" The demon king is in front of me sitting on his throne of fire.
"Where is my beloved's soul?" I went directly to the point of my reason for being here.
The demon king laughed. Along with him, his subordinates laughed too. Their laughter echoed the icy dungeon and it’s making my whole being shiver.
"Your beloved is here?" A demon circled around me. Contrary to what humans think a demon would look like, the one I am facing right now doesn't have horns or red skin. In fact, he looks like an angel but instead of white wings, the feathers have fallen leaving bald spots everywhere and the remaining feathers are turning black. His hair is stuck in place which seems like it's been covered with gel. The skin is blistered with cold sores.
"She sold her soul. It was a mistake. I am taking it back." My voice was trembling but I tried to act tough.
The demons laughed at me once more.
"You do know, being here is quite dangerous, right?" The demon snarled at me.
"I know the danger."
"You might have woken up one of our greatest demons. Poreskuro."
The name sent shivers in my nonexistent skin.
I know Poreskuro has been hunting me for millennias. He has always been disapproving of my existence. In fact, the demon king even guaranteed him a promotion if he managed to capture me and kill me. But I was never frightened of him. My beloved and I have always won against him. As long as we're together, I know I will be safe.
Together…
I cannot imagine a reincarnation without her.
"Love." The demon king spoke. "Really defies a lot of laws." He showed a small bottle in his hands. Inside of it is a pure white soul like mine. Of course, after all, she is my other half. Only our soul is as white as snow. Maybe that’s the reason why the demon tempted her. He knows my beloved’s soul be worth a lot.
"That's my beloved's."
"It is, isn't it?"
"Give it to me." I tried to snatch it from the demon but he pulled it away.
“The demon who took your beloved’s soul got promoted because of it. He was just a half-demon until he took Reign’s soul and paid it to me. He is now a superior.”
I bit my lip as they were quivering in anger.
"Let's say I did give it back to you, what do I get in return?"
The demon circling around me rubbed his hands together, "oh, I like where this is going."
"In return?" I asked. "I am the Holy Soul. I am already doing too much for the balance of our universe. Why do I still need to give you anything?"
The demon king laughed, "I see. You are not someone to play with. Fine, what will you do once you have this?" He threw the bottle in his hands, juggling it as if its a toy.
"Stop playing with it. My beloved's soul is not a toy."
"Do you know what to do to get your soulmate back? Simply having this in your hands isn't enough, Holy Soul."
"I will find a way."
He shook his head, "you don't understand. This smoke is merely a soul. Without its former vessel, it's nothing. If this gets reincarnated while Reign is still alive, this will no longer be your beloved's."
"I do plan to return it to her."
"And? And then what? What will Reign do with the smoke in a bottle?"
I stared at him cluelessly.
"Reign must die with the soul inside of her." He stared at the bottle. "It must be returned to its former vessel. It's the only way for it to be reincarnated the way you want it."
I gulped.
"Are you willing to see her be in pain, watch her die, for your own selfish desires?"
"I will do anything for her. I am sure that this is what my beloved would want me to do. This is not a selfish desire."
"By doing so, you know that it's against the Nothing, right?"
I nodded.
"That is where the likes of us go when we die."
I nodded again.
"You are not only defying the laws of the souls but also the laws of the celestials."
"I am fully aware of my actions."
The demon king leaned his back on his throne.
We stared at each other for quite some time until he cut off the eye contact. He threw the bottle in the air and it disappeared.
"Where did it go?"
"I sent it to Heaven. I'll let them deal with you."
“Why did you do that?”
“I am just following the process. The souls I get from the collectors, I send them back to the heavens. I am playing safe here, Holy Soul. I don’t want to be wrapped around with this little game of yours.”
With more anger in my heart, I returned to Heaven.
"You've come here, to beg for your soulmate's soul?" An angel appeared in front of me. It stopped me from seeing God as we aren't allowed to face him.
I nodded, "as soon as my beloved's soul is delivered here, I want it in my hands."
"You must be out of your wits, Holy Soul. You know that is not allowed."
"Who are you to stop me?"
"I am an angel, a seraphim, higher than you."
"Really? Then why are you stuck up here, huh? Why are you in the same place for God knows how long? Million years? Billion years? Since the beginning of time? You even witnessed one of our angel's downfall."
"Be careful with your words, Holy Soul."
"All I'm asking is for her soul! I've done a lot of things for you. Why can't I have this one thing?!!" I cried.
"You should be reincarnating now, Holy Soul. In human years, it's been a decade already."
A decade? Reign is still there.
"Seraphim, the new batch of souls has arrived," a lower angel informed him.
As soon as I heard that, I sprinted towards the delivery area where tiny bottles with black smoke inside are being held. Bottles of sold souls.
I looked around but I don't think any of it is my beloved's.
"Looking for this?" An angel appeared in front of me and showed a bottle full of white smoke in it. That one. That one is my beloved's.
"Give it to me."
"We can't. This one has been segregated because it's contaminated."
"What?"
"Your beloved has been taking souls as payments. She's a half-demon now. This is the only way she could live." The angel showed it to me, “look it’s turning a bit gray. More sins and this will completely turn gray.”
"I don't care. Give it to me." I tried to snatch the bottle from the angel but she was quick and placed it in the other segregated souls.
I ran behind the angel and took the bottle of my beloved's soul.
"Holy Soul," the angel called me as a warning.
I opened the bottle.
"What are you doing?"
Without any second thoughts, I breathed in the soul.
"You drank your soulmate's soul?"
I threw the empty bottle away. "I will find her and I will return her soul to her."
"How? You drank it! This is a sin, Holy Soul! You might get banned from Heaven!"
"It's not what matters anymore."
"You're giving up Heaven for your soulmate?"
"You are an angel with only rational thoughts. You will never understand why I am doing this sacrifice." I closed my eyes and let my apparition drift away back to the physical world.
Reign, wait for me. I will save you.
