Chapter 6: The Waiting Game

Chapter 6: The Waiting Game

May 22, 2022

A few days passed by.

"Waiting sucks."

Kenjiro said with irritation as Akiko approached him, carrying water bottles.

"It does."

Akiko handed him a bottle, and Kenjiro reached out to get it and said his thanks.

"Did you learn anything new?"

Kenjiro asked after drinking some of the water.

"Not really, all of the authorities kept their lips sealed on giving any specifics. All they kept on saying were general responses like 'everything's under control, you don't have to worry.'"

Kenjiro sighed as he sprawled his limbs out on the mat.

"I mean I'm glad I'm alive but I wished all of this was over soon, it's been another two days."

Akiko hummed in agreement.

Kenjiro let out another sigh.

"At least there's food and water."

"Uh-huh."

Another sigh, "I really wanna know if I can contact my family back in America."

By the fourth sigh, Akiko rolled his eyes.

"I'll go around and see what I can find."

Relief and hope can be heard in Kenjiro's voice, "Really? That would awesome."

Akiko had a dissatisfied look, he glared at Kenjiro for a moment. He sighed, then he got up and
walked away.

Kenjiro with a wide grin sat up and shouted. "I'm so lucky to have you!"

Akiko's back kept facing Kenjiro as he disappeared into the crowd.

Kenjiro's grin lingered on his face but it soon disappeared as he realized that he had nothing to do.

"Man, I should have taken a Japanese language course or something."

Kenjiro looked around the courtyard. Akiko had informed him about the buildings at Keio University. The one situated on the north was the main campus, and the east building was the library, the one on the west was the graduate school, and the one on the south is just literally called the south school building.

Past the library was where the dormitories were located, some rooms were assigned only for
showering. Other rooms were designated for the injured, it was decided just a few days ago
after the authorities were sure that there were no longer aftershocks.

Kenjiro walked around, the way the place was built somehow impressed him. Although that's
what he's felt throughout his trip to Japan. He felt certain despair as it had been cut short
due to the disaster. His need to contact his family also weighed down on him. Although he said
it in a light-hearted way earlier, he was worried about them.

Kenjiro carried on, continuing to journey through the campus. The campus had greenery although it's not like a whole garden at least some trees and plants were thriving enough to give the place a certain ambiance. Various sections of the campus were off-limits, either security guards stopped people from proceeding farther or it was the staff members who would suggest that they all turn back and would even escort them back. Kenjiro had no choice but to go back.

He noticed that there was a larger crowd that lined up towards the volunteers' canopy. Curious, he went to check it out.

Kenjiro went to the side, it seemed like the volunteers were giving out food. Some people near Kenjiro have already claimed theirs and he took a peek at the bento boxes that they were holding.

Kenjiro was relieved that they were still handing out lunches. He feared that they will soon live off of emergency military rations. He despised the rubbery pieces of meat in what they called 'stew', the driest peanut butter imaginable and jerky as tough as leather. Although he hasn't really tried the ones from Japan, he still had doubts about any emergency rations. He quickly went to queue up at the back of the line.

He looked down to see an endless row of heads of varying hairstyles. Kenjiro thought of several instances where he had to suffer a long line such as this. There was one when he had to line up for a newly opened milk tea kiosk. Another one was when he had to wait an extremely long to buy tickets for a Marvel film. That one was worse but it was worth it in the end. The only time Knejiro felt devasted by a long line was when he went to vote for the elections.

Kenjiro shook off his thoughts. He patiently waited in line. The number of people in front of him dissipated and he soon faced the volunteers. One of the volunteers was already familiar with Kenjiro. Bento boxes and bottled water kept cold by ice boxes lined the tables between the volunteers and evacuees.

A Japanese-looking man smiled at Kenjiro, "Good to see you, Kenjiro. How've you been?"

"Doing good, Jonathan."

Kenjiro smiled back, he was relieved when he found out the day before that there was somebody else who spoke and understood English fluently. Jonathan had an English mother and a Japanese father. Kenjiro was elated to meet another half-blood.

"So, what's for today?"

Kenjiro asked with an excited tone.

Jonathan was a friendly fellow who matched Kenjiro's excitement.

"Today we have tempura bento. Not only that but we have some melon bread." Jonathan bent down to grab something from the table. He handed Kenjiro a wrapped-up melon pan.

"Oh, cool. That's new." Kenjiro looked at the wrapped-up melon pan.

"Yeah, a popular company donated these."

"That's awesome of them."

Kenjiro thought of Akiko's portion. He felt guilty having Akiko play the detective for the past few days.

"Hey, dude. Is it okay if I grab some food for Akiko again?"

Jonathan opened his mouth to speak but paused and took a moment.

"I'll go hand it to you later, people seem to think that you’re getting two portions for yourself."

Kenjiro tried to hide his embarrassment, "Oh, sure. That'd be great."

He took the food from Jonathan and left. "Thanks, dude."

"No problem."
