Romance Uncliched!

Fate, Tell Me Why (III.1)

Fate, Tell Me Why (III.1)

May 28, 2022

Junming closed the manual with a satisfied sigh. He noted down a few points after reading the manual. Most important was the choice of venue. Then, he needed a moving vehicle to zoom past the couple so that the guy would sweep his client out of harm’s way and into his arms. The close physical distance between the couple's lips would arouse the guy’s romantic feelings and lead to a kiss.

So first, he needed to choose a lovely bridge. It had to be scenic, quiet, and in the neighborhood of his client’s office. Bringing up a map of the city, he noted the locations of both his client’s office and that of her boyfriend’s. That part of the city had more than five bridges between them. His eyebrows scrunched in thought. Of the five bridges, two of them were far from scenic. That left him with three.

He wasn’t too familiar with that part of town, so he couldn’t rule out those that had a lot of traffic. Maybe he could use one of the traffic apps but he knew those weren’t very accurate. Besides, it didn’t take into account pedestrian traffic on the bridge itself.

Recalling Kyler’s offer to help, he got up from his seat and rounded the corner of his cubicle. The soft clacking of keys drifted from her desk. He called out in a whisper, lest he disturb her. “Kyler?”

Her round face popped out over the divider. “Yeah?”

“Can I ask you for help?”

“Sure,” she chirped. “Go ahead.”

He wrung his hands together. “I want to set up a meeting for my client on a nice bridge. Preferably a quiet one. Are you familiar with the south side of town?”

Kyler’s forehead furrowed as she hummed. “Not too familiar. But basically, what you want is a bridge that has little foot traffic and such, right?”

“Yup.”

“You can ask Sinjin.” Kyler pointed a finger towards the ConDuit engineers’ cubicles. “She deals with data analysis and such. Wait, you haven’t met her either. Do you want me to introduce you guys?”

“Oh no, that’s fine.” He waved his hands in dismissal. “You’ve helped me enough. I can ask her myself. Thanks a lot, Kyler.”

Smiling, he let her get back to work and walked over to the ConDuit engineer’s side of the room. Over the past two days, he hadn’t seen either of the engineers. Jamal said that Mr. Grayson had them tied up in meetings almost the whole day long. Junming wondered what it must be like to work with such a terrifying boss who had a stare as cold as ice.

Rounding the corner, he heard the sound of loud and fast clacking - the trademark of software engineers, he believed. His heartbeat picked up as he peeked in over the divider. Anxiety ran in his veins at the thought of meeting a new fellow colleague.

He gulped and rapped on the divider firmly but not too loud. “Umm, hello?”

“What?” A sharp-eyed woman leaned back in her seat and scrutinized him. “Who are you?”

His heels snapped to attention. “Oh, I’m Yu Junming. Umm, the new ConCoct agent.”

She took off her headphones and looked him up and down. “Right. The new guy.”

“Yes, I started work yesterday.” He didn’t know why he was offering an explanation when it was clear she had heard of him already.

“I’m Sinjin Anjoul.” She offered her hand and he shook it.

“Nice to meet you,” he said.

She rested an arm on her chair. “So, what do you need?”

“Umm, I need to choose a location for my client.” Shifting on his feet, Junming fidgeted under her stare. Something about her vibe reminded him of Mr. Black although she was decidedly less menacing. But then again, appearances could be deceiving.

Zooming close to the couple is a recipe for disaster with Junming’s record 😂 Even if he doesn’t hit anyone he’ll probably drive through a puddle and soak them or something.

Congrats on the merch, it looks really good 😃

Hopeless romantic Yu Junming is over the moon when he lands a job at the RomCon startup as a ConCoct agent. From meet-cutes to ultimate airport runs, he must re-enact surreal romantic scenes to fit a client’s dreams. Sadly, he botches his assignments and learns the hard way that romance needs a dash of practicality.

Despite his track record, he’s soon tasked to help his boss, Grayson Black - a die-hard cynic who dislikes him at first sight - to find love. Through disastrous dates, the two men grow closer and realize there’s more to each other than meets the eye.

Junming fantasizes of seeing even more of Grayson but he also finds himself drawn to Fernanda Morales, a spunky and eccentric undercover reporter who masquerades as a RomCon client. When Fernanda unexpectedly ends up heartbroken after an awful date, she falls for Junming. Pitiably ignorant of her mission to dig up dirt on RomCon, Junming is stuck between two people and a hard place called reality.
