Several years have passed as Avalon awoke inhaling nothing but a thick smog. She looked all around her and saw nothing but hot burning embers surrounding her room engulfing the house in flames; she acted quickly, taking her sword and breastplate; getting out as fast as she could. She lost just about everything else. Her parents were nowhere to be found, and more than half the village was engulfed in the flames. She could make out a few figures on the other side of the town, but she couldn’t tell if anyone else made it. Her legs felt like jelly as she looked in horror as she heard nothing but screams and on the other end by the shadowy figures she could hear the faint sounds of joyous laughter.
She quickly turned cheek and stumbled her way towards the woods; hoping the thick smog would keep the assailants off her tail for the time being. As she walked deeper the sounds grew quieter and everything started to look hazy as she kept stumbling forward. All she can remember is the faint screech of a crow and then the world went black. When she finally came to Ava was alone in the middle of the desolate frostbitten environment before her. The thick fur of the coat around her; the only thing keeping her from the same fate as the trees around her adorned by ice and snow. In the distance she could still see the thick smog from her burning village; she couldn’t have made it too far. She could hear rumbling deep within her body, just then a small rabbit hopped close enough to her to hit with her sword. As she drew her hands back an arrow planted itself right threw the eyes of the small critter blood splattering all over Ava’s cloak as a result of the well-placed shot.
“Who’s there?” Ava cried trying to sound stern and serious but instead squeaked in fear as she drew her sword in defense of whoever dared step closer. Another arrow flew just past her ear nailing the tree directly behind her. She squeaked again and ducked down pulling out her knife and cutting the right foot of the rabbit clean off. She didn’t have the tools to preserve the foot, but right now her superstition was the only thing keeping her alive. Just then someone grabbed her while she wasn’t paying attention as she fell unconscious for the second time. She came to a few times while being dragged off through the snow and ice, her vision never fully recovered the entire trip she unwillingly took.
Ava awoke in a bed; not hers but it was indeed warm. Her hands weren’t bound either which she was fully expecting after being attacked twice in a single night. “Ah, you’re awake. I’m glad… ma’ found you in the snow all alone. My name is Emilia, but most people here call me Emi.” she said with a shy smile. “Where the hell am I?!?” Ava exclaimed as she went to draw her sword but it wasn’t anywhere to be found. “Where are my things? What exactly are you?” she just kept berating the girl with so many questions that she started quivering and stammering as she pointed to the wardrobe next to the bed. She started to calm down when she realized Emilia wasn’t a threat or anyone trying to harm her for that matter, but she couldn’t shake the fact the girl wasn’t at all human. She looked her up and down and even rubbed her eyes, but the purple-skinned, pointed-ear girl was still in front of her very much frightened from the overload of questions and temper Ava let off.
Emilia looked frightened to the point Ava almost instantly relaxed herself. As she relaxed Emilia seemed to look less scared. “I’m an elf… as for where you are; you are in our town. It is not the biggest, but it is safe from them.” she said her voice was still a bit shaky as she started to walk out of the room. “I’m sorry Emi.. I didn’t mean to frighten you… I just didn’t want to die…” Ava retorted as she watched the young girl leave the room.
Emilia just gave her a weak smile before going through the doorway. Ava didn’t follow, but she did get dressed into warm clothes that weren’t tattered and soaked from the snow. She also strapped her sword to her hip and adorned her breastplate once more before following Emilia into the corridor. It seemed to stretch for almost a mile, but Ava knew that wasn’t possible for anyone, especially elves. She continued walking around looking at the rocky textures on the walls around her. “What is this?” she asked, touching the walls as she walked through the halls. “It is bedrock, the hardest material beneath the surface of the earth; but I would not expect a human such as yourself to know that just by seeing it one time.” Emilia’s voice was very soft, but it seemed very calm compared to what Ava saw moments before back in the bedroom.
