Cautious in his steps, Daewon remained outside the tall building where Cheonsa lived. Until now, if Daewon were to be asked what the best place to hide would be in his opinion, he would say, without a doubt, that an isolated place would be the best one to hide, yet, now, looking at the tall building that overshadowed his body, his answer would change, without a doubt.
Who would think of anything strange in a place full of people, right?
The rush of adrenaline that he felt earlier cooled down, but he had come too far to go back. After all, he didn’t do anything wrong, right? He just wanted to be sure that his suspicions were right or not.
He began following Cheonsa’s path again. As soon as he entered the building, he saw a flight of endless stairs. He could still hear Cheonsa walking.
Cheonsa lived on the last floor, isolated by the world. It seemed like he hadn’t noticed that he was followed, as Daewon could see him opening the door without looking around.
That was the moment: if it were to confront him, this was the time.
When Cheonsa stepped inside, Daewon rushed over, jumping over the remaining steps of stairs. The moment the door was about to close, Daewon stopped it with his foot.
Surprised, Cheonsa glared back at him.
‘Oh? My classmate, what are you doing here?’ Cheonsa didn't move from his spot.
Daewon pushed himself onto the door, opening it with a loud bang, ‘I would want to ask the same. What were you doing in front of Soo-Yun’s house’
Before the door would hit the wall, Cheonsa let go of the handle. Slowly, he turned around, a smirk appeared on his face the moment he heard what Daewon asked him.
‘I don’t know what you are talking about. Did you follow me home? Why?’ Cheonsa slowly approached him. ‘What makes you this insecure? Are you afraid?’
Daewon clenched his fist. At first, it was to control his anger, hearing him act dumb was engaging, but, just as he finished his reply, somehow, Daewon punched him in the nose.
Both of them were surprised by this act. Cheonsa took a few steps back, wailing in pain, and Daewon stood still, with his fist still in the air. By the time he regained his senses, Cheonsa, whose nose was bleeding, grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to the living room, pushing him on the floor.
Unbalanced, Daewon hit his back on the corner of the table, cursing out when his body hit the floor. His phone fell out of his pocket and managed to roll under the sofa from the living room.
Cheonsa wiped out the blood with his sleeve. His expression darkened as he glanced at the boy. No matter the situation, Daewon acted reckless when he punched him without a reason, and, from this point onward, everything that was to happen was pure self-defense.
In that instant, Daewon saw how Cheonsa took a glass that was on the table and smashed it on the wall. The small pieces of glass fell to the ground, yet the big, remaining, part of the glass was held tightly in Cheonsa’s hand. Before even getting the chance to blink, Cheonsa attacked Daewon with that broken glass.
He wasn’t fast enough to react, but, by luck, he managed to catch the glass with his bare hand before it hit his face.
‘You insolent bastard! You dared to punch me? In my house?’ Cheonsa tried to recover the glass from Daewon’s hands.
The blood dripped onto Daewon’s face, slowly falling onto his lips, with each drop, his lips were redder. He could taste the metallic taste of it. ‘If you have nothing to hide, then why do you react like this? What do you hide?’
The moment he uttered the word ‘hide’ Cheonsa’s expression paled. His hands let go of the piece of glass, and, for Daewon, who struggled to protect himself, this was a moment of peace. Yet the moment was short-lived, as Cheonsa punched his face the moment Daewon breathed in relief.
This time, he was hit with full force, as he couldn’t see it coming. The moment he was hit, he couldn’t concentrate anymore, as if his mind emptied, all he could think was the overbearing pain that felt familiar, strangely familiar.
Distraught, he didn’t see the second punch that hit him. This time, he started coughing blood. The metallic taste overflowed inside his mouth – it was everything he could taste at this time.
‘If I kill you right now, no one would ever miss you, you stupid bastard!’ Cheonsa yelled at him
That moment, Daewon took the opportunity when he was distracted to roll over, far from him.
‘So you had been killed before? This is why you’re so confident you’ll be able to kill me?’
Cheonsa tried to approach him and hit him once again, but, this time, Daewon thought quickly and shielded his body with a chair.
‘Don’t get too cocky. Even if you are my first person to kill, you’ll deserve your death!’ he puffed out, angrily
Daewon threw the chair at Cheonsa, making him stumble over it. When he stood up again, he felt his head heavy, his vision was blurry and the pain was unbearable. All of those from the two punches of his.
‘Why do you hold a grudge against Soo-Yun?! Do you think I didn’t notice?’
Cheonsa laughed: ‘You really want to die here, right?’
Maybe, after hearing this, Daewon realized how much of a mess he got himself into, but it was too late to back down. Scanning the room, he contemplated a way out. Cheonsa blocked out the main entrance, and while this was an open spaced living room connected with the kitchen, the only temporary escape for him were the two rooms that were accessible to him.
He quickly approached the closest one to him. If he was lucky, it was Cheonsa’s bedroom, and maybe he could find a way out from there. If he was unlucky, he would open the door to the toilet.
The moment he put his hand on the handle, he saw the horrifying expression on Cheonsa’s face. He shouted something, but Daewon was so scared, that everything he could hear was his heart beating.
He shut the door behind him and used his body as a rock to block Cheonsa from opening the door. Out of breath, he tried to calm himself down.
‘GET OUT! GET OUT THIS INSTANT!’ he could hear Cheonsa yelling out as he tried to open the door
For the first time, Daewon could feel the uneasiness in his voice, as if he was scared.
The moment Daewon raised his eyes and looked inside the room, he found the answer behind the sudden change of attitude of Cheonsa.
