The final countdown had started — After all the hassle, the day arrived, the Swan Lake performance would be held in less than 8 hours. This time, every second mattered, and one second too late could ruin everything for him.
Daewon was supposed to wake up at 6 AM this morning, but he couldn’t even close his eyes all night. He walked around his room, thinking back and forth of all the possibilities this day could go wrong — but he knew if the meeting from today was going to go badly, he will miss any chance on saving Soo-Yun.
While the meeting was to be held at 10 AM, Daewon arrived there 2 hours earlier. His attempt to save time didn’t help much, as he was called into the Principal’s office around 11 AM.
Most of the time, Daewon kept looking down, at his boots, but — during the entire meeting — there were times where he raised his eyes to check up the time. The more he looked, the more he kept fidgeting on his chair, letting out a sight every time he saw the time.
‘Mister Kang, are you certain you are in the position to show such a rude behavior towards this meeting? If this is the kind of attitude you want to show — after all the trouble you caused — then I find myself in the position to think again on the decision to reintegrate you into the class.’ The Principal spoke with a harsh voice
His response suddenly brought Daewon back to his sense. He lowered his head and apologized. It wasn’t worth explaining the reason as to why he was in such a hurry, so there wasn’t anything left for him to do — other than apologize.
‘I had to say that, coming from you, I had never expected such a behavior. I know you are young, and even I made mistakes at your age, but that does not mean you are excused for what you had done. Our committee has decided to give you a second chance to finish off the year on good terms, but I hope this would never happen again. You promise me you’re going to stay low and out of trouble until the year ends?’
A spark quickly shined his eyes — that was all he had hoped for: the end of his punishment.
‘Thank you so much, Mr. Principal! I am beyond grateful for the kindness you had showed me this whole time. I will for sure listen to your words’ he lied
After all, Daewon was the one who was never listened to. He knew the true face of Cheonsa, but no one — except for Soo-Yun — trusted him.
The moment he left that office, he started running. The clock showed him he only had an hour and a half left until Soo-Yun’s death. If he arrived in time, he could, certainly, change fate.
Somewhere along the way, he felt his lungs aching — as if they were going to explode, but he didn’t have any chance to stop and catch his breath. On his way, he passed by the Flower Shop.
In his previous life, he stopped there and brought the bouquet of roses for Soo-Yun. He remembers how, for the first time, he felt intrigued as the lady explained him the meaning behind the color of the roses he picked and how the lady said she would — for sure — love them.
He never got the chance to know if she would love the flowers he wanted to get her, but, if she was to live after this day, he would make sure to bring her lots of flowers.
‘Young man, would you like to buy some flowers?’ the old lady from the Flower Shop asked him
Daewon slowed down as he quickly replied: ‘I’ll be sure to come back and buy some flowers! Not today!’
The moment he arrived in front of the building, he looked at his clock: 50 minutes left. In his previous life, he arrived when there were 35 minutes left before the show started — and it was too late to save Soo-Yun. Would those 15 minutes be enough to save her?
With his shaking hands, he took out the concert’s ticket and the letter of approval to enter Soo-Yun’s private room.
As he stepped inside the waiting room, the view was more different than the one he saw the first time. This time, the number of people attending was much lower than last time — even his friends haven’t arrived yet. Quickly, he went to the Staff Member to get his ticket and letter checked.
The girl — he remembered her from last time. Up until this point, everything was normal.
‘It’s too strange — Too quiet. Don’t tell me… has he already arrived before me?’ Daewon couldn’t stop but wonder as the girl took her time to check his ticket.
The moment the girl handed his ticket back and let him pass through, the lights cut off. The whole building was overshadowed by the darkness.
‘This! This is how he managed to enter without being noticed!’
With the lights being cut off, it was clear that people started to panic without a reason. So, no one would notice if someone where to do anything bad.
For once, he felt grateful he had seen this event unfold, as this time, he had known where Soo-Yun’s room was. It was a matter of seconds until he arrived in front of the door.
A wave of shivers rushed through his spine. Hesitant, he put his hand on the door’s handle and pushed.
There wasn’t anything to block the door. This meant only one thing: Soo-Yun was still alive.
‘Daewon! Help me!’ Soo-Yun’s voice muttered out a plead for help
There wasn’t time for Daewon to even comprehend the fact that she was truly alive — a loud bang was hear, and after that, he heard Soo-Yun wailing in pain.
‘You psycho! Cheonsa! What did you do?!’ Daewon quickly asked, as he did not know what the source of the sound was
Someone broke into laughter.
‘You know, I have to admit this, you really impressed me. No one figured my intentions until you arrived.’ Cheonsa revealed his identity
A loud bang was heard once again. ‘But what can you do? I would love to see the look on your face as I smash Soo-Yun’s head, but too bad, I only get to hear your trembling voice.’
Daewon boiled with anger, he found himself going towards the sound the moment he heard Cheonsa utter those words. His fist clenched onto Cheonsa’s collar — he was sure he did it. The moment he was certain, his fist punched Cheonsa’s face.
In that moment, he heard Soo-Yun’s body fell to the ground.
‘Run! Run!’ he shouted for the girl
It was clear that while they had to fight in the darkness, both of them were in disadvantage. So, Daewon punch came as a surprise. With him being distracted for a few seconds, Daewon managed to create an opening for Soo-Yun to escape.
Like him, Cheonsa also fought back — he aimed his fist in the air, hoping that he could punch him too. Only by an inch did Daewon manage escaping his punching.
‘Stop this nonsense, Cheonsa! It’s not too late. Don’t be an idiot and waste this chance!’
‘As if you know! My life has no meaning if she’s alive! That damned witch! She destroyed my life! It’s only fair for me to do the same with her life!’ Cheonsa replied in a harsh tone ‘But it’s fine with me! I’ll kill both of you. It’s not like the world cares for your death.’
Daewon knew he couldn’t joke around now. This was the moment he had to corner him. If he managed to corner him successfully, this would be the end! Unbeknownst to Cheonsa, Daewon instructed the girl on every attempt he could play to hurt her, and even after he hit her head on the wall, Daewon heard the girl leave the room the moment he created that opening.
Yet, like him, Cheonsa also had his hidden cards. While Daewon didn’t know where exactly they were in the room, Cheonsa had time to know a bit about his surroundings. He picked out something from the desk and managed to hit Daewon’s head — he hit him with a hand mirror.
This came off as a surprise for Daewon, but he quickly snapped back on his senses the moment he felt Cheonsa attempted to leave — he grabed tightly onto his body and rushed foward with him.
BANG!
Cheonsa’s body hit the wall behind him. This was the chance Daewon waited for — if he successfully cornered him there, then, when Soo-Yun will return, the police would handle him.
As if he had picked up on his plan, Cheonsa warned him one last time:
‘You truly don’t cherish your life? Don’t you?’
‘Who are you to ask me this, when you’re living everyday in this hell of attempt to get revenge on? I am glad to live this life! And I am glad to lose my life if I can live up to my promises.’
Cheonsa bursted out, laughing ‘I pitied you for falling in love with the wrong person, but now, I don’t fell the same. It’s true, that those who are meant for each other, will find each other. Don’t worry, there’s enough space for the two of you to burn in hell.’
A moment passed after Cheonsa finished off his reply. Daewon didn’t know what to expect, but suddenly, he felt a cold sensation. He felt a wetness dripping down his stomach. With one hand, he approached to feel what was the reason for this strange sensation. Soon, his fingers were stopped by shat felt like a sharp blade.
‘You psycho!’ Daewon stuttered in his response, feeling the adrenaline burning inside
Then, he heard a ripping sound and a sensation of pain got over his body. He took a few steps backward: ‘Coward!’ Daewon shouted as he tried to punch him once again.
Too late, he was the one who received a punch. His body fell to the ground and, the moment he tried to get back, something big fell onto his legs! It was Soo-Yun’s desk. In that moment, he felt an unbearable amount of pain. A loud ringing almost broke his eardrums and he felt blood rushing from his body.
Before Daewon lost his conscience, the light turned back on! The door opened and a few police officers rushed inside. This time, they arrived in time! Right in front of their eyes was Cheonsa, whose hands were covered with Daewon’s blood.
‘Don’t move! Raise your hands!’ one officer yelled at him, with his gun pointed towards him
Daewon’s blurry vision didn’t allow him to see the expression on Cheonsa’s face, but, even in this situation, he could clearly see Soo-Yun come by his side.
‘We did it! We’re alive! It’s all thanks to you, Daewon!’ the girl knelt down.
The girl stood close to him, but it felt so far away to him — as his eyes never meet hers. His heart was beating so fast — and, together with the sound of ringing into his ears — it made him unable to hear the rest of the conversation.
Again, he felt that metallic taste as he coughed.
He didn’t know the reason behind it, but tears started staining his cheeks. After all…
He did it! This time, he changed fate — and with that, he saved his crush’s life.
