"He'll survive, he's just a dumbass." Yuri noted, disposing of her gloves while Kaihou got up from the couch. "How did you even manage to get hurt?"
"Something to do with a party, his friend Uta..." Quentin twirled his hand as he tried to remember the details.
"The Winter Gala. Uta, from the Black Rose Alliance. That was a trap waiting to happen, I'm just surprised he didn't shoot you point-blank in the head with how low your guard is around anyone." Yuri grabbed her coffee, andseeing it was from Lily's workplace, Quentin winced.
"He's my best friend, if I can't let my guard down in front of him I can't let it down in front of anyone." Kaihou argued, thinking back on his words shortly after.
"You can trust your family, you just don't want to." His sister opened the door and put on her shoes."I'm gonna go tell dad about this, don't get shot again." Her eyes zoomed in on Quentin, making him shiver.
Once she left, the two were left alone. Quentin used the opportunity to explore more of the Munasawagi Penthouse, noting it's sleek, modern design and furniture. When the walls weren't completely glass, there was some caligraphy or painting on it to fill in some space. The artist took a closer look at the painting of two flowersbehind their grand piano, it had clear texturing from the use of paint globs, meaning that they used a real canvas rather than a digital one. Only a few in the world could still paint traditionally.
"Do you know who made this?" Quentin turned back at Kaihou, who was sitting on the couch, and pointed at the painting.
Kaihou turned, smiling. "My mom did, she was never into my family's business but loved to paint as a hobby." He looked around at all the walls, "She made most of the things here, there was always something so beautiful about nature to her."
Quentin smiled back, "I get that. I never saw a forest til I was sixteen, it's so much more quiet... you can see all the stars."
"That sounds nice... why'd you leave?"
"It got lonely, as much as I love to travel I wanted to be around people that I could always go to whenever I needed good food or gossip."
"Like your friend from earlier, Lily, right?"
"Yeah, like her." Zey sighed. "We're not on good terms right now though, argued earlier."
"I could tell, you wanna vent about it?" Kaihou wrapped his sweater on and walked over to his friend.
"It's about you and your family's crime thing, she's just worried."
Kaihou chuckled, "I don't know if I would throw around the word 'crime' that lightly around here, a bit taboo. We just saybusiness."
"Alright then, she's just worried yourbusiness will get me hurt."
"That's fair, just look at me." He gestured towards his twin wounds. "I had a girlfriend who broke up with me for the same reason, it's dangerous stuff so it's natural to be scared... I'm scared you're gonna get caught in the crossfire too."
Quentin bit the inside of his lip trying not to get flustered, "You don't have to be, I can fend for myself." Inside his head he was giggling like an idiot. "But do you even want to pursue this kind of stuff?"
"It's all I've ever known, I don't know what else I want to do- or if Icando anything else for that matter. My schooling specialized in business and I've never gotten to do music or medicine like my sister, or painting like my mom."
"I could teach you, I played the violin since childhood and painting is my job."
Kaihou looked up at him, "I'd like that. Dunno if I could get the abstract meanings or whatever though, I'm not some super intelligent metaphorical person who finds a message in every speck."
"Rude." Quentin pursed his lips. "But I do like this painting from your mom. From my interpretation, the big flower is her, moving the rain closer towards you, the smaller flower."
The boy turned his head, "Why do you think it's me? Why not Yuri?"
"It's more rugged, still growing and less poised. Not to make fun of you but from what I've seen, Yuri can take care of herself."
"Whatever." He looked at the painting again, smiling at the thought that his mom painted him and her. "You know, my name's pretty common around here. Back in high school I would always be Kaihou 2 or 3, it kinda pissed me off so I wanted to pick a new name for people to call me by, something cool and unique. I almost went with Kai before my mom took me to see this one movie about Greek heroes or whatever."
Kaihou rubbed the frame of the painting, "The main guy came out of this wooden horse and fought off all of these people with his wits, my mom would always nudge me and say 'That'll be you!' so..."
Quentin, already knowing where this story was going, decided to play along. "So?"
