Meanwhile, clear across the city of Rook, a man sighed deeply as he picked up the phone, the man in that apartment walked through a larger apartment, everything in dark hardwoods and rich jewel tones of thick fabrics like velvets, brocades, and other tones. He sighed as he walked out into the living room from where his phone was ringing as he picked up the call.
“Hello?” he asked as he answered
“Dr. Kuroki?” the voice asked
“Yes” he said, the most notable feature of this man aside from the inky black-colored hair that hung to his waist…was the tone of his skin because it was a deep and intense gray tinted purple…that of a dark elf, or drow to some people.
“You are currently on the S.P.E.L.L list correct…working off community service?” they asked, the man sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose, pushing hair back to show harshly pointed ears that went mid-way along the sides of his head and heavily pierced.
“Unfortunately,” the man, Dr. Kuroki, said
“Ah, here it is…indecent exposure, I see”
“I was out at a party, the clothing I had on was extremely tight and it…literally busted on my body, which is what they deemed bad enough that I was put on S.P.E.L.L…Was I chosen finally to get my name off?” he asked
“Someone was brought to the hospital last morning, at first, we believed they were on a magical illegal substance, but…through testing and what we’ve found, we have discovered he is under the effects of an extremely powerful and old curse…one that is as much him as he is it.”
“And why does that bother me?” the man asked
“You are a grave classified cleric, no? To the spider goddess, Lolth, no?” they asked, a slightly pointed tone to their voice as they said the name Lolth, a questioning to it that the doctor was not new to hearing.
“Correct” Dr. Kuroki said
“The man who was brought in…the curse on him makes him a bridge between the world we live in and that of all the ghosts that are trapped between this world and the next.”
“A medium” Dr. Kuroki sighed
“Due to severity of the curse, however, we do not feel comfortable releasing this man. The curse has…taken an extreme hold on him.”
“So, not only do I have to teach him how to function in Rook, but I also have to be a fucking baby-sitter?” Dr. Kuroki asked
“It’s for his own safety and the safety of Rook around him. We fear the possibilities of what could happen if what this curse does…is left unchecked; he is a risk to himself and others without any kind of control or handling of the curse.”
“Why wasn’t it broken?”
“When attempted, the process of breaking the curse proved impossible, it would be like trying to unravel someone’s genetics and rewrite them as you want them. Even sealing the curse away proved impossible and the curse and what magic he has rebuffed the breaker and caused…slightly horrific results.”
“So, because of what my magic is and my profession, you want me to oversee this figure because…”
“We have scoured the list of S.P.E.L.L sponsors and you are the only person on the list with magic that we believe would be able to properly teach and show him how to handle everything about what he can do and what he is.”
“I…see”
“And due to the seriousness of this man…the judge that handled your case deemed it the only one necessary for you to handle to remove your name from the list.” They said which made Dr. Kuroki perk up a little.
“Only this one case?”
“And as usual, a S.P.E.L.L sponsor will only take around 1-2 months and as standard for the program, your assistance will be compensated aside from the removal of your exposure charges.” The voice said as Dr. Kuroki sighed and rubbed his temple with his other hand, the jangle of chain followed as he moved about and paused.
“When should I come to the hospital?” he asked
“As soon as possible will be appreciated, but your face is well known, even in a city as large as Rook, those of us that work for the Spell Program do have an office at the hospital, we will be able to escort you to his room.”
“Which hospital?”
“Angelstone Medical Complex…part of the complex that you work at, no?” the voice said, “Are you…planning on coming posthaste?”
“Well, my work is in that direction anyways as you chose to point out. I work in the complex, yes.” Dr. Kuroki sighed
“His name is Edward Linh” they person on the other end said, “Wish you luck” the voice said before hanging up.
“My lady of thy silvered webs…please, give me strength to deal with this” he said as he paused to glance in the mirror on the wall.
