Hello guys, I just wanted to give a brief intro before you read this chapter. This is somewhat Ellie’s narration of Caroline’s past life as a mage. Chapters like these would go in and out through the story so I would give a heads up like this one just to prevent any confusion. Also there would be a few footnotes to help you understand the story better. End A/N
Swift footsteps almost barely touching the floor raced along the long hallway and down the long endless stairs. Dressed in brown cheque pleated skirt and a carton colored coat the girl went hurriedly down the stairs.
"Aurolia?" A slightly high pitched voice called from behind making the girl stop in her tracks and turn back looking a lot less guilty than she was supposed to. "How many do I have to tell you that no magic in the hallway?"
The girl, Aurolia looked extremely messy, her tightly coiled hair in a bundled disaster, shoes not properly worn that would have caused a noisy thud with each step but was drowned by magic. The only thing slightly in order was the uniform she wore and the large hard covered books stacked on her arms.
"You call that using magic? I barely even did anything" Aurolia started to levitate the books so she could free her arms. She put her shoes on properly and buckled them and put her arms akimbo. The books still in the air.
"You never listen do you?" The lady who turned out to be the dean of the junior mages glared daggers at Aurolia who didn't mind one bit and kept the book in the air still. "Put those down now! And I don't want to see you use magic in the hallway again!" The dean raised her voice which echoed in the hallway making Aurolia flinch just a little.
The use of magic was prohibited in the hallways and the stairs due to multiple accidents that happened there but Aurolia as usual disregarded this rule just like she disregarded every other rule she felt was unnecessary.
"Alright" Aurolia finally held the books in her arms again. What was the need to exert oneself when you could just use magic? She would always think to herself. "Is there any other matter?" She turned not waiting for a reply and continued on her way "I'm late" she said just a little louder as her shoes made loud thuds on the old wooden stairs that also creaked with each step as she went down.
Down the long unending stairs, through another not-so-bright hallway Aurolia hurriedly paced and stopped in front of a door tall enough to accommodate thrice her height and wide enough to contain two elephants, at least that's what she thought not that she had ever seen one. At the top of the door was a label written "Library" which was where all books that concerned sorcery, witchery, wizardry for student mages were kept.
"Good morning Mrs. Winsell" Aurolia said to a lady who seemed to be in her fifties but you never know with a full blown mage. She was the school librarian and Aurolia's favorite person.
"Good morning Aurolia. Isn't it a tat too late for you to be in class?" Mrs. Winsell signed off the books that were dropped on the desk by Aurolia.
The library looked like a small hall with a few long shelves up front but the more you walked through you’re met with an endless intertwines of shelves and more shelves, obviously enchanted. The library was built or moreover enchanted so that one step into the walkway of steps and you're faced with the exact genre of books you want.
"You don't need to stand there dear, I know you brought back the same books you took" Mrs. Winsell said with a slight giggle, her thin rimmed glasses almost falling. "Run along now you can come for the alchemy textbooks later. I had it delivered"
"Really?" Aurolia was extremely overjoyed and wrapped her arms around the librarian almost knocking over the books she had brought. She had always loved reading and it didn't surprise people much that the library was her favorite place and the librarian her favorite person. "Thank you. I will take my leave then" she said waving at Mrs. Winsell as she left the library.
Out the door and she was at it again, running through even more stairs and hallways until she finally got to her first class of the day, Latin.
"clarius quam clara obscurior tenebris"
The Latin teacher resounded spell after spell for the students to repeat but as usual Aurolia dozed off at the back which had become her favorite seat. She had never liked being in classrooms because they made her claustrophobic. She would rather read it herself but it was a must for a practice mage to attend classes.
By the time the lecture was done, she followed behind others who took the same classes as hers.
The next class was summoning which wasn't her favorite but she was quite excellent at it. Aurolia wasn't like the rest students in the school. Being an orphan for as long as she could remember, she found herself raised and trained by Lady Ophelia- an old mage who was no longer part of the world of sorcery but found the talent and overflowing energy in Aurolia too rare to pass by but after her death Aurolia had to school like the other practice mages which she hated.
Due to her knowledge and skill she would usually excel in subjects like alchemy, Latin and even the use of simple spells but Aurolia's problem was not being able to tap into her magic which was a problem for a mage. Her guardian would often tell her that she showcased the energy level even lower than a beginner when she possessed the power greater than any sorcerer. Lady Ophelia did all she could to help her but those attempts always failed.
The summoning spells were always simple enough for her. Aurolia watched in utmost boredom as the mage who taught them scribbled some words on the board without touching it but when the mage was done Aurolia's expression switched to one of shock as she read what had been written on the board 'Familiar'.
Note
Mithras
The country consists of the North, East, West and South. All having their small towns and villages. Most of the mages occupy the South and therefore dominate that part of the country. The rest is fully human
