Social Factors

Soubre listened while his mate spoke with the AI.

The Refuge AI said “I suggest that the first load be exclusively engineers, technical personnel, administrators and their families. The second load should be medical personnel, support personnel and their families. The third load should, depending on time constraints, be either military and police personnel and their families or miscellaneous colonists and their families. For obvious reasons, the military and police should stay as long as possible, but they are not to be casually expended       . . .”

Soubre shook his head. Oddly, Situra could completely forget social factors while building an elaborate, efficient and logical political structure.

So, even though he was an engineer and Situra a political scientist, he sometimes had to remind her she was dealing with people, not machines.

Soubre cleared his throat. “Situra? Let me ask you something. Where are our children?”

Situra blinked and stared at him. “You know that! They are on their way to safety in Refuge . . . oh.”

Her eyes widened “Oh!”

=== Announcement to the Colonists ===

It is a matter of common knowledge that we are in a Code Zed situation. We are glad to announce the Master has prepared a stronghold against such a time of need.

Unfortunately, it will take four trips to relocate the populace.

Everyone will receive instructions over their com unit with copies sent to their PCs detailing when and where they are to report for transit.

The first trip will transport children, their mothers or guardians if the child is under eight standard years, pregnant women, doctors, nurses, nannies along with a skeleton crew of engineers, sanitation engineers and food preparation personnel.

The second trip will transport . . .

STORY COMPLETE

The Mastery is an alien interstellar civilization under the absolute rule of the immortal Master. Code Zed is a general order to the Mastery’s military to be used if the Mastery is attacked by a space-going civilization. Code Zed has never been used and prioritizes the survival of the Mastery over the survival of any individuals. Colony World 17 is the first joint colony of two species, the Singers and the Makers. Singers look like midget T-Rexes with muscular arms and dexterous fingers. They can remember any sound that they hear and can perfectly reproduce most sounds. They are natural linguists. Singers are most comfortable in a rigid social structure such as the military. They usually mate for life and are only interested in sex when their females go into heat. Makers, on the other hand, are super-genius anarchists who almost never mate for life and are very sexually active. They look like a cross between a human and a monkey, having prehensile tails and fur in a variety of colors instead of green scales. Makers are half the size of Singers and are far weaker. Makers are abysmally bad fighters. They can only slap each other and scream insults. If a fight becomes too disruptive, their Peacemakers (post-fertile females) stop it. Golden Singers have been genegeneered to interact more efficiently with Makers. Makers have refused such modifications. Unknown to the Mastery, the Strangers are hidden in the new solar system, awaiting the right moment to attack.
WARNING: Many of the characters are extremely sympathetic, easy to identify with. This is a story of total war, of attempted genocide. People who you care about deeply are going to die. Violence and bad language are scattered throughout. And violence does not always come from the enemy.
