I shot up to my feet when I got no response and fumbled my way to the bathroom in the pitch black apartment, tripping over my own feet in panic. The bathroom had the only light in this unit. I smacked my hand along the wall frantically in the darkness, trying to remember where the light switch was. My heart raced faster as I heard more crashing in the other room while I desperately searched for the elusive light switch.
Got it.
The three yellow lights buzzed to life and oozed light across the bathroom and out the door. The light traveled across the floor and out into the kitchen, dimmly illuminating the room, casting shadows in various directions. I saw a few of my belongings that had previously been by the front door, thrown haphazardly onto the floor in the kitchen.
"Hello??"
I attempted to sound confident but my voice faltered, giving away my current shaken state.
"Who's there?? What the hell do you want?"
There was no response other than a can of beans that had been in my bag by the door, shooting across the room and smacking into the wall in the kitchen. I nearly fell backwards in the bathroom, startled by the sight. I decided to close and lock the bathroom door, put my back to the wall, still facing the door, and slid down the wall to sit on the floor. My mind raced but came up with no great plans and I inwardly cursed myself for not having a cellphone.
The commotion continued outside as my mind raced and heart beat erratically, nearly about to burst. I glanced at my old watch on my wrist and saw the hands snap to 3 am. I didn't get nearly enough sleep.
My attention snapped to the door. The noise outside had stopped completely. The apartment was enveloped in an eerie and disconcerting silence. I sat there, heart thumping out of my chest, for what seemed like an eternity. I placed my hands down on the bathroom tile as quietly as a mouse to move to stand, when one of the three lights in the bathroom sputtered out. I let out an involuntary gasp as the second sputtered out 30 seconds later.
One light left.
Sppzzzrt POP
I screamed like I was a little kid at a haunted house on Halloween and lunged at the bathroom door in the darkness. In my desperate attempt to escape, I slipped on the tile and my head connected with what I think was the sink and I was enveloped in an even deeper darkness as I sank into unconsciousness.
Haunted. That was not on Liam's list when looking for a new apartment, but sometimes there's hidden perks when moving to a new place... right? He's generally a fairly optimistic guy, but this ghost is definitely testing his patience and resolve. And is there an even deeper story behind this haunting? Only time will tell.
