A full month had passed and the Romans had not come back to the village. It was very clear that the messenger most likely delivered the warning. Whatever they said must have truly struck deep into the heart of whoever gave the order to attack the tribe in the first place. The tribespeople were getting used to interacting and talking with Vaxalyn and Hinami now that they had broke their seals and retaking their true forms with a noticeable boost in power for both of them. Given all of the strangeness surrounding the fact that people in the tribe could use magic and that the two of them were outsiders they did not question that this is what they really were. To the people of the tribe they were still family horns and all.
Charlamagne on the other hand after recovering from his overexertion of both his magic and his physical limitations now could freely access his character sheet. With it he studied all the spells that he currently knew, and what his character sheet said they could do in comparison to what how he has been using them.
To his surprise he had only been really using level 1 spells but because of all of his buffs to his magic and the fact that he had so many spells at his disposal his basic spells were far superior to even that of a normal level one spellcaster. Because of how he built himself to be in this new life when he was making those choices he essentially gave himself a massive advantage over all of his magical peers. That's why the gap in power between him and the others in the tribe that could use magic was so vast.
He also had traits that seemingly developed over his childhood as he grew up in this new world along with his upbringing which he had already looked at. His traits were actually very interesting as they seeming made him seem even more powerful.
- Magic Supremacy: All spells you cast have an increased range of +50ft, an increased area of effect of +20ft, and deal an extra 5 dice of damage. However you gain -5 in 2 stats of your choice.
- Sword Born: Whenever you use a sword of any kind and make a successful hit with it it will deal an extra 4 dice of damage, but if you try and use any other weapon that is not a sword then you must roll to hit at disadvantage.
- Storm Racer: You gain resistance to lightning damage and your base walking speed is increased by 30ft. You are vulnerable to force damage.
- Dragon Blooded: You are descended from a mighty and powerful Dragon and a portion of the power of the dragon has been passed down to you. You gained immunity in either fire, water, wind, earth, cold, lightning, radiant, necrotic, acid, or poison damage. Your weapon attacks deal 5d6 of that damage type and any spells you cast the deal that type of damage deal an extra 5 dice of damage. You gain -3 to 3 stats of your choice.
- True Mortal: You gain +10 to 3 Stats and +20 to 5 skills. You gain a permanent -5 to AC and you gain vulnerability to one damage type of your choice.
He was getting used to all of it and as he thought about it more and more he realized he needed to start training some of the new abilities that he apparently unlocked. He had to remember that even though it seemed like a game looking at the character sheet and thinking about leveling up and all of that; it was still very much real life. And that all of these video game like elements were just there to make him start to see it as a game when it's not.
However he could not deny that it was hard not to think of it as a game. His ways of going about getting stronger were more akin to min-maxing then actually training which he had to shake the thought out of his mind. He had to force himself to remember that this was all real, or else he might lose himself in that fantasy and start taking things less seriously than they are.
After all he had to change the course of history so much that the future he came from would be unidentifiable to the new future he must help create. At that moment his train of thought is interrupted by Lunja. She was one of the twins of his Aunt Markunda.
She was 11 years old but would be 12 in another month. She was tall and slender and just barely showing the signs of a girl becoming a woman. Her skin was a light brown color and she had blue and brown eyes. She had dreadlocks that reach down to her shoulder blades that were jet black. Then there was the very noticeable stars on her body similar to his, but she only had 3 and they were around her left eye.
She walked up and told him, "Charles mama sent me to ask you for help finding Tadla. She was supposed to be getting ready for today's magic lesson. Would you help me find me sister?"
Charlamagne stood up and began making his way towards the coastline. He agreed, "Of course. I saw her head this way not to long ago. I think she was going to check on your father at the fishing hut."
The two of them began making their way in that direction the fishing hut wasn't more than 15 minutes directly north of the village and it was visible from a distance. The hut was there for their fishermen to try and catch the fish that swim in the Mediterranean Sea. There were 3 fishermen that work there and one of them was his Uncle Bandii. He was the father of the twins and the son of the village chief. In fact given the chief's current state of health he was most likely going to become the new chief.
Soon they came across the hut and they could hear his uncle and Tadla inside. Entering in they saw the two of them were trying desperately to perform CPR on a young girl.
Seeing this Charlamagne immediately rushed over it and move them aside. Using his magic to sense water in the girl's lungs. Once he found it he safely pulled all the water out and then filled her lungs with fresh oxygen to help her breathe. The salt water that he pulled out of her lungs he then let fall onto the floor of the hut as once he saw she was breathing again he tried his best to dry her off so she wouldn't get a cold.
Looking at her she was a young Roman girl clearly. She has all the same facial features typical of a Roman but she was undeniably very beautiful. She had the same light tan slightly olive skin that most Romans tend to have. She had very curly and long dirty blond hair that in some lighting almost looked brown. It was clear that from what she was wearing and how she looked but she was most likely a peasant. The wounds on her body where her clothes were ripped, show that she was running from someone who was attacking her when she fell into the water and somehow most likely washed up here. She looked to be about the same agent the twins if not a little older by maybe a year or two but she was still definitely younger than he was.
As Charlemagne saw her injuries he reached out his hand and touched her wound which caused her to react in pain even though she was still unconscious and he cast a healing spell which he now knew the name of. He casted Loving Hand. It was one of the 2 basic healing spells that any level 1 could use. But seeing how effective it was on healing her wounds as they seemingly disappeared as if they were never there; he imagines that when used on a normal person or a low-level person it's quite effective.
Bandii looked to Tadla and requested, "My dear can you go get one of your spare robes so this girl can be changed into something dry? Charlemagne and I will look after her until you get back."
Charlemagne looked to Lunja, "Lulu, I need you to go get my mother. Tell her it's an emergency and that we need her help making sure a young girl survives. Please be quick I'm only able to stabilize her but I'm not a trained healer."
As the 2 girls ran off each to do their own separate tasks Charlemagne knew that with what he had done the girl would survive. But he wasn't sure if she would be in a coma or if her health might take a turn for the worse. Changing her into some dry clothes with definitely help make sure that she doesn't catch a cold, and even though his mother isn't a trained healer she knows more about how to help this girl than anyone. As her knowledge of medicine far exceeds any one here in the village.
Bandii told him what happened, "Tadla came to bring me breakfast just about 10 minutes before you and Lunja arrived. She had noticed what looked like a body in the water floating towards the coastline. I pulled her in and we discovered this little girl who had been drowning but was still alive. I immediately tried to help with getting the water out of her lungs using what your mother taught us. You arrived not long after we started trying to save her. I'm thankful that you came when you did as I'm not sure I would have been able to help her."
Charlemagne responded, "You did the right thing. This girl was likely being hunted for some reason." Shortly after saying that Tadla returned with fresh clothes.
The 3 of them together started helping to change her into the clean clothes once they got her out of her wet clothes they noticed the stars on her body. She had 20 of them which was 5 more than the kid in the tribe with the second-highest number of stars. They took note of that and finished helping her change into the new robes and laying her back down she was still unconscious.
The mere fact that she had those birthmarks was enough indication to Charlemagne as to why she was being attacked. Most likely Roman soldiers were trying to capture her like they had tried to come to the village to do.
After two more minutes his mother came in looking worried and saw the young girl laying down unconscious. Lunja walked back in after her and looked exhausted. Hinami began thoroughly examining the girl to see what state she was currently in. After 5 minutes she breathed a sigh of relief, "You all did a good job. She is going to be fine. Whatever healing Charlemagne did before I got here seems to have taken care of her injuries and there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with her other than the fact she is extremely exhausted. After some much needed rest she'll most definitely wake up."
Charlemagne gave her a rundown on the fact that the girl most definitely had magic giving her birthmarks and that she most likely was running from Roman soldiers when she somehow ended up afloat in the Mediterranean. The rest Bandii explained and together they all agreed to move her somewhere else.
Charlamagne carried her over to the hut that he and his family lived in. Knowing that the villagers I would definitely want to figure out why a Roman girl was in there village; he left explaining it to them for both his mother and Bandii to really figure out. After hearing everything his father came to the hut to check on the girl, he found Charlemagne watching her and making sure to monitor her condition in case it got better or got worse.
Not too long after both of them could hear as most of the village debating loudly with each other on whether or not to let the girls stay or send her back out when she had woken up. Given their recent conflict with the Romans, it was very understandable that there were some in the village who were hesitant to let a Roman be there; even if it was just a little girl. They could hear us some sympathized with the fact that she was running a way to escape being enslaved. However some saw that as none of their business and would rather not get involved.
Hinami and Bandii were the biggest voices of reason amongst the villagers. They were trying to get them to understand that she was just a child. A child who clearly did not deserve to be enslaved or sent back to the people that were trying to enslave her to begin with.
Eventually the girl started to wake up and as she saw Charlemagne she reached out to touch his arm. When he felt her hand he looked down to see her bright yellow eyes staring at him. She was terrified and sad and with all of her strength she begged him, "Please save me."
Hearing that made him remember his past, during the war when a young girl was trapped under rubble even though she was a child who was raised by the enemy he could not just leave her there to die. Because at the end of the day Charlemagne was not cold hearted and evil even if he could block out his emotions. As he took the girl's hand and try to comfort her he gave her a nod.
With a single look he conveyed that he would keep her safe and that he would be right back. His father stayed inside to look after the girl as he got up and went to join the people. As he approached the chief was trying to get everyone to stop arguing long enough to think.
Once Charlemagne was close enough he slammed his foot down on a stone and the impact crushed the rock beneath his heel. Instantly all of the villagers fell silent. He did not yell or raise a fuss instead he told them simply and clearly, "We are not savages and we are not monsters. That girl needs help. I will not see her enslaved just for the gift she has. The same gift that some of your children have...... The same gift I have. She has woken up and asked for help. She stays and that's final. If none of you will help her fine..... I will. Go home or get back to work. We do not know when the soldiers will return, but you can believe that they will and we must prepare."
With that he walked away leaving them in silence and contemplation. Because they knew he was right even if some of them didn't want to be bothered with it or feared what it could bring down upon them. As Charlemagne walked away Chief Wakababii motioned to Bandii and Hinami to join him in his hut.
Charlemagne returned to see the girl was trying to drink water and eat some bread to try and give herself some energy. His father try to help make sure she didn't eat or drink too fast. Charlemagne sat down and his father told him in the language of the tribe so the girl did not understand their conversation, "You know if you continue to act like the leader of the tribe giving out orders like that then the chief will either have you exiled or forced into marrying one of his granddaughters."
Charlemagne nodded, "I know. But someone has to make sure people keep their common sense around here." He turned his attention to the girl and started speaking African Latin, "What is your name little lady?"
After swallowing the last gulp of water she brush the crumbs off of her face and answered shyly, "My name is Drusilla Calpurnia. I'm from Leptis Magna."
