Losing Hope

Chapter 4: Another Survivor

Chapter 4: Another Survivor

Jun 18, 2022

'Can you hear me?! Please keep talking. I'm trying to find you!' He screamed and cupped his hands over his mouth to make his voice louder. He blinked his eyes rapidly, trying to adjust quickly to the darkness. His legs started to become numb, knowing he shouldn’t be running with his legs. His ears were cold from the freezing temperatures.

'I can hear you. Your close by-' Nathan could hear her voice a lot more clearly now. He stopped and turned to the direction where he heard her, then started sprinting again. He tripped a few times over rocks, but it couldn't slow him down, he got back up and continued running.

'What's your name?' Nathan tried to keep her talking, hoping that she could hear him even though he was out of breath. It was hard to hear, his ears were starting to get numb. It was completely dark now and the Sun had rested. A cold breeze came and made everything even more freezing, it traveled through the trees onto his skin, forming goosebumps on his arms.

He finally saw her, even through the darkness, he couldn’t miss her body sitting next to a tree stump. She heard him nearing her and looked in his direction. He crouched down next to her and looked at her state, her hair was a mess and her face was wet and her eyes were red and puffy from her previous tears. It didn't look like she was hurt, except for her feet. They looked almost like the corpses he had seen.

'Hey, are you okay?’ He repeated, trying to get her to talk before she started sobbing again. Nathan grabbed her hand and looked at her face. She looked familiar, Nathan thought that she was probably someone in his class. He took some of the branches off of her and tried to look for any serious injuries on her, other than her feet, she was okay.

‘Thank you so much! Thank you... ’ She wept on his arm, clenching on his shirt with her hands balled into fists. She kept her eyes down and held Nathan close.

‘Can I pick you up?’ His voice trembled a bit, he was scared that he wasn't strong enough to pick her up. He had to help her get back to the beach, it wasn’t safe here. He stayed silent for her response, reaching to her back and under her knees to get a good grip on her. She slowly nodded her head, unable to form words from her sobbing. He slowly lifted her up, steading himself on his feet and trying to get her comfortable in his arms. Once he was sure she was holding on tight he sprinted back from the way he came, making sure to pick his feet up and not trip, even though he couldn’t see and was running blind. She was surprisingly light. She had to be around his age, but he couldn’t see her face clearly because of her hair dangling loosely and she was covered in dirt.

The run back felt like hours of constant running, Nathan started to think that maybe he turned the wrong way and was heading further into the bushes. He could feel his heart in his throat and his eyes were stinging. He saw an orange light in the corner of his eye, he couldn’t hear anything except for the woman’s sobbing and his breathing. He ran to the light, knowing that it was fire and that he was close to the beach.

He felt sand between his toes, trying to get his vision back to normal to find a place for him to lay her down. It was all to dark, he started to run a little slower, and slower, until he was just walking at a normal speed, too tired to run again. The burn on the underside of his foot had been long forgotten. He stopped in his path and crouched down to put down the mysterious girl he had to save once he knew they were on the beach.

'You okay?’ Nathan asked her softly, still trying to catch his breath. She had calmed down a little and was just sniffling. He had put her down but she was still holding tight onto his shirt. She was breathing normally, other than him, and tilted her head up to look at him. The hair that was infront of her face moved back and he could finally see her. He hadn’t even realized when his vision was back to normal, but he could see the fear in her eyes. Her face scrunched up, trying to cry once again but no tears came out.
‘I’m okay. Thank you so much, thank you, thank you ...’ She thanked him repeatingly, he didn’t really know what to do, he just held her on her sides, not making any movement and just staring at the girl, she leaned into him to give him a hug.

‘Alright, we’re going to stay here for the night, okay?’ He looked at her, trying to get her to stop crying and calm down, eventually she did and just laid there on the sand, still holding onto one of his hands and shivering. Her body trembled, her clothes looked worse that him, she was probably cold. He picked her up again and moved her closer to his fire. The seat that he took from the plane was now full of sand. Nathan walked to it and picked it up, he didn't know what he would do with it, but he kept it inanyway.

'I’m tired.’ She complained and closed her eyes, trying to form her body into a ball, she achieved it after a minute of groaning and mumbling. Nathan just stared at her, knowing that he should be going to sleep too but worrying that maybe it wasn’t safe.

‘I know, I am too. Get some rest, alright?' He crouched down next to her and watched as her breathing evened and her body relaxed. Nathan felt tears starting to form again, there was someone with him. He wasn't alone. He tried to stay quiet to not wake her. He wiped the tears of, he had to make a plan. He was scared. He stood up again and walked back to the plane. He hadn't went through everything when he was searching earlier. Although it was dark, the moon lit up the dark and the fire was helping him a lot.

Nathan looked at everything, there were corpses sprawled across the seats. The smell wasn't that pleasant either. He looked through the bags he could find on the floor for anything that could help them. Thankfully he found food in some of them, he found water bottles and even toiletries. Nathan walked around the plane, the door on the back of the plane broke open, revealing a lot of luggage and bags. He ran into the small room, all of the bags were stacked on top of each other, a few of them layed on the sand of were broken.

He found new clothes, and more food, and more water. This was amazing. They could survive for longer than he had interpreted. He picked up a new suitcase and zipped it open, there were clothes for her, and soap. They needed to savour this all. Who knew how quickly this could all run out. He searched for his suitcase, and he found it. He took it back to their camp. The girl was still asleep, but she had moved and was now looking more comfortable.

Nathan had to build something for them to live in. But he didn't know how he could build it. He was worried that he would wake her up so he decided that he would start making it the next day. He walked back to the plane, grabbing the suitcases with things in that they could use. Then he grabbed a few more with only clothes in. He dragged all of them back to their camp and zipped them open. He started taking out all the clothes and bunched them up. Nathan turned back to the girl and lifted her head up with his hand. He slowly put the clothing under her head and took his hand away.

She didn't wake up and kept sleeping peacefully. Nathan went back to the suitcases and emptied two to put all of the food, water and toiletries in. He zipped it shut and dragged it closer to the woods, where the tide couldn't reach. When he knew that everything was ready for them to change, he slowly started to relax. He grabbed his suitcase and looked for his extra inhaler. He found it and pushed it two times while breathing in. Nathan put it back and grabbed some of his clothes, a new shirt and pants. He took off his old ripped shirt and put on his new one, it felt great on his skin. The other one was itchy and uncomfortable. He turned away from the girl incase she woke up and put on new boxers and pants. He was much more comfortable now.

He grabbed some clothes for her that she could put on. Then dragged the suitcase to the other close to the woods. He walked back to the girl, she was still sleeping peacefully. She looked so calm, he examined her face, she was pretty. She was probably in his class, but he didn't know who she was. He had always been bad with remembering names. Nathan moved closer to the fire and layed next to it. He relaxed his body, even thought the sand was uncomfortable, it felt nice. He spent the whole day running around. He needed to rest. His vision slowly started to get dark as he fell asleep.
