“Now that you have all learned how to control your magic we’re going to go about summoning your familiars, I know we talked about this briefly before but I feel you are all ready to learn.” the Magic teacher said in her ancient voice. “This will be your partner for life, if something happens to them and they go poof you must wait two days before you can re summon them.” She said as she passed out little summoning papers. These already had the summoning sigil engraved onto them, the only thing that he would need to do is to put his own blood onto the center of the sigil and say the magic words. “Now it just needs a drop of blood and the words $#^# ^&%)&% #$%$#%^.” She told them as she passed out needles.
He pricked his thumb and winced but then squeezed out a few drops of blood. “That is honestly the worst part.” he muttered.
“I agree.” Lidia said, trying to prick her own thumb. “I can’t do it… I’m not good with blood or pain.” She said reluctantly. Lua took up the needle and before she could react he pierced her thumb just enough for a small bead of blood to appear.
“You’re welcome.” He told her as she looked surprised.
“Lua can you help me too I’m afraid we’ll be here all day” Felicia said holding out her own finger and needle. He laughed and repeated the process for her as well and then they recited their words as the sigil lit up with their magic as the paper absorbed their blood.
“Now some of your familiars might be a bit skittish. This is their first time as well, they should all be quite small, no bigger than a house cat usually.” The teacher told them. “That is a lovely little Chameleon Mr De La Griffin well done.” She said seeing Ivan’s summon walking about his hair slowly.
There was a flash of blue and a small blue colored owl flew about Felicia’s head before taking roost on her shoulder and then looking at her questioningly. A second flash of blue and a blue green fish flopped on the ground in front of Lidia. She panicked wondering if she needed water and then it realized what was going on and it righted itself and started to swim about infront of her with its long elegant fins and tail. It reminded him of a fancy goldfish but this one looked as if it had some sort of intelligence to it. There was a flash of white and green in front of him but he saw nothing. Confused, he looked to the sigil that was clearly used up but he saw nothing. He wondered if it was invizable or if it was just shy. It turned out it was currently both.
“Did it not work?” Lidia asked, seeing his confused face.
“No they’re there, I think they’re just shy…” he told her as he could feel it on the table next to the sigil. “It’s okay little one no one will hurt you.” He said softly, holding his hand out. There were tiny feet the size of maybe a mouse that were on his fingertips then they hopped into the middle of his hand and spun around, a moment later a small tiny white rabbit with silvery wings appeared in his hand.
“What a lovely little fairy rabbit.” The teacher said, taking a look at them. “I haven’t seen one of these guys in a long long time.” Seeing how she was an elf he could believe that it had been indeed a long time since one had been seen. “Never seen a white one before.”
“Are they rare?” He asked.
“As a familiar? Yes, in the fairy forest they are all over the place if you know where to look.”
*Food, sweet, pocket.* it said looking at him.
“Oh you want the candy I've stashed in my pocket huh?” He said with a smile. He rubbed her forehead with his finger. “Usagi.” He decided on her name, she somehow reminded him of a character from an Anime in his past life. He pulled out one of the small strawberry flavored candy and gave it to her. She took it and zoomed off circling around his head happily with her treat before she landed on his shoulder and slid into his pocket disappearing to eat her treat in peace. He smiled and couldn’t wait to introduce her to Henri later.
“That was absolutely adorable.” Lidia said as she let her own familiar drift around her occasionally it rubbed against her fingers to scratch itself happily. “You always carry candy?” She asked.
“Not always but mostly, it helps in the morning with my medication.” He told her. It was extremely bitter.
“I always chase mine with juice.” Ivan told him as his own familiar walked along his fingers looking left and right then front and back at the same time. “Anything sweet works though.” He added.
“That bad?” Felicia said curiously.
“Yes.” Lua and Ivan said in unison.
“Maybe we should work on that…” She mumbled to herself. She was more of an alchemist than a mage, she was usually the one who provided potions provided you weren’t taking her fiancee away, or going after her brother. Her alpha mother was the current prime minister, a job her brother wanted to take over, her Omega mother was a famous Alchemist who had a large company that made medication for Alphas and Omegas and was affordable to everyone, as well as potions both common and rare.
“Isn’t the medication you take bitter too?” Lua asked curiously.
“I’m sure it is but what kind of Alpha is going to complain? Besides, we tend to like things bitter or spicy whereas Omega’s tend to like things that are sweet. I wonder if that’s why you smell sweet.”
“I doubt it. I smell like flowers but we don’t grow flowers at my home, nore do they decorate the rooms.” Lua said. “I also don’t do flowery sweets, I like fruits.”
“Odd, but you’re right you smell like roses and violets.” Felicia pointed out. “Does Henri give you flowers for your room?” She asked. Lua turned pink at this.
“Yes, occasionally he does, they stay in my room and I most of the time I press them into bookmarks.” He admitted. It had become his little hobby to press some of the smaller flowers and the petals of the bigger ones into bookmarks for his own use. It was something his mother approved of him doing, and it was good practice for control of his gravity magic.
“So that is where you get your pretty bookmarks!” Lidia exclaimed. “No wonder you don’t let people borrow them.” She bumped his shoulder causing his cheeks to darken.
“It’s good practice for my gravity magic, if you have some flowers you want pressed let me know I’m rather good at it now.” He said truthfully.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Both Felicia and Lidia said.
“I have some in my room if you wouldn’t mind…” Ivan said, turning a bit pink.
“Alright we’ll do that later.” He said happily.
They spent the rest of their class bonding with their familiars and after they had tea time, Lua felt both nervous and happy as he sat down next to Henri. Henri smiled and then took his hand into his own, a familiar warmth ran up his hand making him feel giddy. He’d never get used to that.
“I see you guys summoned your familiars today.” he said, noticing everyone's familiars about, except Lua’s. “Where is yours?” He asked curiously.
“Sleeping, I think.” He told him as he looked into his pocket. “Though I’m sure this little gluttonous puffball can be charmed out with something sweet. Like fresh strawberries.” He said, glancing over the tea table. The tiny head of the fairy rabbit peeked out hearing that there were strawberries. “See, gluton.” He joked as he helped her out of his pocket. “This is Usagi.” he said, showing her off.
*Strawberry! Love!* Usagi said not caring as she ran down his arm and then fluttered over to the fruit and helped herself to one of them that was almost as big as she was. Lua laughed and picked both up and sat them next to him before he helped himself to a fruit tart.
“I’ve never seen a white fairy rabbit.” Henri said looking at the little familiar as it happily munched away on the strawberry. “She is cute, much like you.” he said, making Lua blush. “They suit you.”
“Thank you.” He said, his ears wiggling slightly. Henri couldn’t help himself as he kissed his temple making him blush even deeper.
Henri’s wind phoenix joined them, the proud small silvery blue bird demanded treats and happily sat upon his shoulder, it occasionally looked at Usagi in a way that he wasn’t sure if he was going to eat her or let her get plumper. Usagi after her third strawberry noticed him and with a squeak hid back inside Lua’s pocket.
The rest of the year went by smoothly, Henri and Lua’s engagement had been announced at the winter ball, a tradition for most nobles. They then had a slightly awkward first dance and a more comfortable second dance as they were not in the spotlight. Henri had presented him with a pair of silver ear cuffs studded with amethyst and emeralds as a surprise engagement gift. He was quite happy to note that Lua had seemingly put on what he deemed was proper weight, though he thought he was still a bit skinny. Lua turned out to be ranked third in his class overall. He still was slow with history and etiquette but it was all passable, his mother was over all, quite happy about it as well, she had been worried he was going to be an idiot.
Over the summer she was more relaxed around him, letting him go out to not only see Henri but also the group of mostly approved friends he’d made during the school year. She only started to worry when the news of the Light Magic user was found amongst the De La Cove Barrony. Her daughter’s dreams came to mind but it seemed that Henri wasn’t interested in her as he still came to visit frequently.
