I was enjoying my sleep when a sudden hand smacked me across the face, with it followed immense pain. I shot up from the infirmary bed clutching my face and turning my head from side to side to find my attacker. My eyes found Dee's and then her wicked smile. I flopped back onto the bed and growled.
"Your face was priceless!" Dee laughed loudly.
"Screw you," I said turning on my side and snuggling into the rough school blankets.
"Oh, come on Maddy it was only a joke. Besides, it's time to wake up, classes are over." Dee continuously poked and prodded my back.
"Here's an idea, try waking me up like a normal person!" I shouted before having a coughing fit into the pillow.
"Nah." She said while ripping the sheets away from me. "I like waking you up my way."
I shivered and curled into a ball. "Dee seriously! BACK OFF!"
I rolled onto my back and looked up at the ceiling light. My sight was soon blocked by Dee's boobs as she jumped on top of me. My eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, as her full weight pressed against my stomach. All the air in my body seemed to escape from me and I tapped on her thigh rapidly to get her attention.
"Dee!" I gasped. "Dee you are literally killing me!" I spoke between gasps.
"Oh, hush now.” Dee rolled her eyes. “If you can speak you can breathe. I won't stop until you apologize."
"For what!?!" I struggled to say.
"For scaring the crap out of me! Do you know how worried I was!?" Dee looked down at me. Her blue eyes now filled with distraught.
I sighed.
That's Dee for you, a bipolar, crazy chick. But hey, she was my bipolar, crazy chick. I heaved myself up and wrapped my arms around her neck. She wrapped her arms around back and squeezed hard.
"I'm...I'm..." I suddenly felt my nose get scratchy and breathing hitch. Dee must have sensed I was about to sneeze because her entire body went stiff.
"I swear Maddy, if you get even one drop of snot on me, I will kill you."
"Sorry!" I sneezed.
And just like that, our pleasant moment was ruined. Dee squealed as she jumped away from me. She checked her hair and clothes for any sign of my DNA. And when she found the single drop of mucus resting on her shoulder, I suddenly felt the need to use my pillow as a shield.
"Maddison Andrew Hastings, YOU ARE SO DEAD!!" Dee charged toward me and I did my best to avoid her perfectly manicured claws she called nails.
"Gah! Dee! I'm sorry!" I said coughing in her general direction. Her eyes looked like they could start a fire, and without warning she swiped the pillow from my hands and started hitting me with it.
"Ouch! Dee, ah!" I shouted, using my arms as my only defense. "I'm sick have some mercy woman!"
"Mercy!?” She laughed wickedly. “Why the hell would I even want to give you-"
Dee was cut off when someone knocked on the infirmary door. Dee and I both looked at the door to see a pair of grey eyes watching us with a confusing gaze.
What was his name again? Gary? No... Gr... Grey! Grey what? Greymond? Nah...
"Greyson!" Dee and I said simultaneously. We both looked at each other weirdly before looking back at Greyson. He chuckled softly before flashing a smile.
"I, uh, hope I wasn't disturbing anything.” Greyson said taking note of the scene in front of him. “I just wanted to see if you were alright, you took a nasty fall."
Dee must have noticed how rabid we both looked and quickly fixed her pose before fluffing my pillow. She roughly lifted me up, replaced it underneath me, and shoved me back down on the bed.
"Don't mess this up for me." Dee whispered into my ear before standing to face Greyson. "Of course not! I was just waking Maddy up because his classes are over and he should go home and rest."
She flashed him an I-want-to-screw-you smile and he mimicked her expression. Dee turned to me and yanked me up. "Come on, Maddy, let's get you home!"
"Thanks," I said not feeling very grateful. Without saying anything Dee pulled me off the bed. I wobbled a bit before catching my grip.
"Oh, Greyson why don't you walk with us?" Dee asked batting her eyes. I wanted to throw up, and I knew it wasn’t because of the fever.
“Sure, my classes are over as well,” Greyson nodded his head.
As we walked, Dee clung to Greyson like, he was the last life jacket on the titanic, and discussed something about a party this weekend. She kept giving him not-so-subtle hints that she had no one to go with. I on the other hand was trying hard not to fall on my face again. Dee had worn me down to the point where I just wanted to go home and sleep.
Dee's cell rang and I cursed silently because we had to wait in a freezing parking lot while she searched for her phone in her enormous purse.
"Hello?" Dee spoke into her cell. "Oh! Hey Doug!... Yeah, he's right here with me." Dee shoved the phone into my face and unconsciously took a step back. "It's Doug say Hi!"
I mumbled a hello and she put the phone back up to her ear. Then, she placed her purse on the hood of her car in effort to find her keys.
I shivered and placed my hands into my pockets. Suddenly something heavy fell on my shoulders. Greyson’s had given me his black leather jacket. I looked at Greyson and knitted my brows in confusion.
"You're already sick, I wouldn't want you to get any worse." He explained with a grin.
"Uh, thanks." I said giving him a small nod. It felt kind of weird to receive a jacket from another dude, but I didn't want to think too hard about it because I was cold and his jacket was doing a nice job of keeping me warm.
"What do you mean I have to come in? There was just a murder Doug! ... Yeah... But... No, he can't he's been sick all day.” As Dee continued to speak into the phone. The more and more frustrated she sounded.
I noticed Greyson got incredibly interested in the conversation when Dee mention the murder. I should probably scold her about that later. Dee eventually shut off her phone and sighed.
"Is everything okay?" Greyson asked touching her shoulder. Dee smiled warmly and placed her hand over his.
"Yeah, I'm just going to talk to Maddy for a second." Greyson nodded and she played with his hand for a bit before pulling me aside. She was about to speak when she noticed the jacket on my shoulders.
"Whose is that?" Dee asked skeptically.
“It’s Greyson's. He said he didn't want me to get any sicker." I said noticing that the jacket looks quite expensive, like it was made from actual leather. I unconsciously sniffed it while examining the collar. It smelled like a mix of strawberries and something else I couldn't quite put my finger on.
"Oh, great he's gay." Dee crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. “This always happens to me!” I suddenly felt the need to take off the coat because I didn’t want to give Greyson the wrong message, but the wind started picking up so I just left it on.
"How can you tell?” I asked tilting my head.
"Silly, Maddy,” Dee said purposely being condescending, “Boys don't just give their coats to anybody. You should know that."
I looked at Dee like she was wearing a tin foil hat.
"Don’t womansplain things to me. That's stupid logic, I give you my coat all the time and I don’t want to jump your bones."
Dee glared at me, “I wasn’t womansplaining or whatever.”
"And besides it's obvious he's got a thing for you." I continued. “He keeps looking at you like a piece of meat, its actually gross.
"You think so?" Dee’s eyes grew wide with excitement.
I nodded.
"Well in that case, maybe he's not gay, but it would have been funny if he was into you. I mean seriously you get hit on by more boys than girls."
"Wasn't there something important you had to tell me." I said changing the subject.
"Yeah, right! So apparently Doug's shop got all messed up after the cops left last night."
My jaw dropped.
"What!? Doug okay?"
"Yeah Doug's fine, but the cafe is totally trashed. And since the cops spent the entire day gathering info, he wants me to clean it up. He wanted you too, but I told him you were too sick."
"No, no I should go." I said heading toward the passenger side of Dee's car, but she stopped me.
"No, you should go home and rest. I can handle it." She placed both hands on my shoulders. "Don't think I didn't notice you wobbling as we walked. You need to go home and take some medicine."
"Dee you know I hate taken meds it does nothing for me."
"Stop acting like your four and take your damn meds," Dee nagged. We have this argument every time I get sick.
"Not gonna happen." I said yanking the door handle. When the car didn’t open, I just kept yanking it.
"Maddy, I don't have time for this. I need to get to work." Dee’s words suddenly gave me a flashback when I was eight years old.
I was also sick that morning and my mother was trying to give me medicine, but I wouldn't take it. She checked her watch before looking down at me and repeated Dee’s words. She was mad at me for making her late, but I couldn't help it. Something was wrong with me and I just didn’t want to be alone.
"Oi! Earth to Maddy" Dee said waving her hand. I shook my head quickly and tried to focus on the present situation. But somehow, I couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling in my chest.
"Sorry, you just reminded me of my mother for a second." I mumbled before coughing.
“Ew, gross, don’t compare me to that woman,” Dee frowned and without warning hugged me tightly. "I promise if I have time, I'll come check up on you after work."
I nodded and she let go of me. She then took my hand and brought me back toward Greyson, who was listening to music and playing a game on his phone. Dee waved at him for his attention. He pulled an ear bud out and looked at me with concern in his eyes. I wondered if he heard anything Dee and I were discussing.
"Is everything okay?" Greyson asked looking at me, but Dee spoke before I could respond.
"Um, actually no. I need to head to work, but I don't want Maddy walking home in his condition."
"Dee I'm honestly fine." I said pulling my hand away from hers.
"Shut up Maddy you're sick." I just rolled my eyes at her comment. Dee bit her lip, "Greyson I know this is kind of weird to ask seeing that we only met you this morning, but would it be alright if you take Maddy home."
"Oh, it's no big deal really." Greyson said smiling. Dee smiled back and hugged him.
"Really? Thank you, thank you!" She said letting go of him. "And if you could make sure Maddy takes some medicine, that would be great. He hates taking pills, ever since he was little, it takes me an arm and a leg just for me to get him to swallow some."
“Hi, I’m a grown man. I think I can take care of myself, thank you,” I scowled at Dee, but she just laughed and opened her car door.
"Bye boys!" Dee winked and backed out of the parking lot. We said goodbye and watched her leave before heading toward Greyson's car. My eyes almost popped out of their sockets when we stopped in front of a slick black Camaro.
"No way, dude, this isn't your car." I said touching the hood.
"Yeah it's one of my cars." Greyson chuckled. My fingers traced the side of the car as it found its way toward the door handle.
"One of your cars?" My heart nearly stopped.
"Yeah I have a couple." Greyson said clearly trying to avoid the subject. I looked at him wide-eyed before we both got into the car.
"And why the hell are you going to this crappy school again?"
"My parents bought this for me, and I wasn't going to say no, but I try not to ask much from them."
I nodded in understanding, but said nothing more. If he didn’t want to talk about it then I wasn’t going to push it.
The engine revved and I swear I was about to have an eargasm. He turned the heat up and I stared blankly out the window watching the trees pass by.
“So, what’s your deal with Dee? Are you two sleeping together or something?” Greyson asked focusing on the road.
“Dee and I are just friends. She’s more like family to me really,” I smiled. He did like her, after all.
We didn't really say much to each other after that, which, was my fault. Every time Greyson tried starting a conversation, I would only reply with single-word responses. The only person I ever really open up to is Dee, she's the only one who gets me. I know if everything else hits the fan she'll be there for me. Eventually, Greyson just gave up trying to talk to me and just turned on the radio.
