Tae awakens with a start and is furious when he sees Deamon’s bonds thrown about the bed, but the demon was nowhere in sight. He was not angry with Deamon. It was expected that a prisoner would attempt to escape at every turn. He was angry with himself. How could he have fallen asleep? And, frankly, why did the demon leave him alive?
He storms out of the room and from the inn in search of his bounty. This is exactly why he doesn’t take jobs that have an emphasis on “alive.” Oh how he loves the “or dead” caveat of his work. He takes out the tracking crystal that Tian had been spelled to locate Deamon. He is surprised at the strength of its glow, indicating that Deamon was still within the city…or maybe he was not surprised at all, since the demon was probably off killing people. He begins his search; the crystal leads him along the same path that Deamon had taken. The trail doubles in and back out of an alley. Being in a hurry to catch up with Deamon, he nearly passes it by without a glance. Something glints in the moonlight and catches his attention though. Out of curiosity he peers into the alley allowing his eyes to adjust to the dim light. He sees the body lying dead on the ground, the knife at his feet.
He knew Deamon was off killing again. Though, honestly, his choice of victims was nearly honorable. As his own code allowed him to kill other killers and in self-defense, maybe Deamon too had a code of sorts. He pondered this as he continued to follow the trail of magic left behind as the demon stalked the city. He passed through the square seeing even less of the city sites than Deamon had, as he was focused on the demon’s trail.
Then he sees what he had been dreading. The trail went straight into a house. He bolts forward, goes straight to the door and pounds it loudly. He hits the door so hard that it rattles on its hinges and it seems that the entire brick structure may shatter at the man's strength. The noise reverberating from the onslaught seems enough to wake the entire world.
