Two—
"Stop moping."
"I'm not moping," I huffed, then let out a sigh. Mel gave me a pointed look before rolling her eyes and continuing to put on her eyeshadow. It was a beautiful gold and bronze color that complimented her chocolate skin perfectly. I was jealous of her. She got to dress up nicely for her beloved while I moped around, pathetically single.
"I don't understand why you're making me come on your date. I don't want to third wheel and isn't the whole point of a date being together with your beloved? Not your beloved and your depressed best friend?" I grumbled, flopping on her bed.
"How many times do I have to tell you? It's not a date. It's a small social gathering. You need to stop moping around and be social, find yourself a mate. Look at those hips! They're just asking to bear children!"
I snorted at her, "That doesn't make sense and stop pointing out my hips. Yours are bigger."
Mel smirked at me, "This is true."
I turned over until I was on my stomach, hugging one of her fluffy pillows in my arms. "So when exactly are you and Jackson going to make it official? I still haven't figured out why you're waiting. You guys are of age now."
Melrose stopped putting on her makeup and stared at her reflection in the vanity mirror on the desk she was sitting at. Her expression was somewhat sad and I sensed a longing in her gaze. I didn't mean to be insensitive with my questions, I thought it was okay to ask.
"I'm sorry for prying," I told her quickly, not wanting her to be upset anymore. It would be horrible if I was the reason she couldn't enjoy her night with her beloved. It wasn't my business and I shouldn't have meddled. As I was about to tell her this, she shook her head at me and smiled as if she already knew what I was going to say. I wouldn't be surprised if she did, it wouldn't be the first time.
"It's fine. It's nothing really, just some technicalities with our parents. Don't worry about it, it will be happening soon and you'll be the first to know about it," she beamed, but I wasn't dumb. It was clearly fake. It wasn't my business, so I didn't pry. "Shouldn't you be getting dressed?" she asked raising a brow and successfully changing the topic.
I glanced down at my sweatpants and t-shirt, then back at her. "I am."
She gave me a pointed look before pointing to the door so I could go to my house and change. I groaned, rolling over on the bed.
"I don't wanna go!" I whined.
"Drew."
It was her no nonsense tone, so I dumped myself off the bed and slunk off to my house where I could change into appropriate attire. My parents were in the living room discussing something about the upcoming arrival of the annual Human-Wolf Banquet in honor of the agreement of peace between the two. I didn't even want to think about it. I hated going and it took physical effort not to kill every human there.
They didn't acknowledge me, thankfully, probably because they knew I wanted nothing to do with their conversation. I was grateful.
Going into my closet, I browsed through the various shirts and pants, finally settling on a maroon button down and black slim fitting jeans that showed off my hips that Mel was so proud of. I had to show off my best assets to the Alphas.
I chose some dark dress shoes as well, before mussing with my hair in the mirror. It was getting long. I was way over do for a cut. I'd have to see the barber soon.
Deciding to slick it back in a stylish fashion, I was dressed enough not to get harassed by Melrose. If I didn't look up to her standards, she'd strip me and force me into something obnoxious just to annoy me.
I went back over to her house and heard her talking to her parents in the den. I followed the voices and found Jackson in a deep discussion with her dad while Melrose herself—looking gorgeous in a little black dress—talking to her mother. What I didn't expect, was Kai standing in the corner quietly, looking very out of place.
When I came into the room, they looked up at my entrance.
Kai looked more than shocked to see me.
"You look great!" Mel cheered, running over to me. Her mother joining her. Both of them were cooing at me, smoothing my clothes, fixing little pieces of my hair, the whole works. But I was use to them fussing over me whenever I dressed up. I didn't do it often, so when I did, they got a little too excited.
"I don't know why someone hasn't scooped you up yet. Look at those hips!" Mel's mom gushed, stepping back to get a better look.
There they go with the hip thing again.
"That's what I said," Mel agreed, arms crossed, just appraising me.
"You know, a few friends of mine have some very promising Alpha's still looking for a mate. I can introduce you to them!"
"I'm feeling very uncomfortable right about now," I muttered, making them laugh.
"Leave the poor boy alone, Claudette. He'll find his mate without you meddling. Plus, they're probably nowhere near good enough for him," Mel's dad said with a wink at me.
I smiled back at him, "I'm positive that's not true."
"Nonsense!"
"Kai, honey. Aren't you looking for a mate? The clock is ticking and you're already twenty-four! You should be betrothed already!" Claudette asked, thoroughly embarrassing me.
"Mom!" Mel screamed horrified.
"What? It's an innocent question!"
"You don't say that to people! And you're embarrassing Drew! Stop trying to whore him out to everyone, he doesn't need help finding a mate."
Very embarrassed right about now.
I tried to ignore all of the stares, but Kai's was boring into my head. I didn't dare look at him, instead, at Jackson's apologetic face. He knew how Mel's family was. He was about to take them as his own once they made the mating official.
"They might find someone at the Human-Wolf Bancquet that's coming up," Jackson offered and I knew he was only trying to help but that was the last thing I wanted to talk about.
"That's right!" Claudette exclaimed in excitement.
Mel glared at Jackson before shooting me an apologetic look of her own.
I tried to control my expression, keeping it neutral as I gave my response, but I was not too successful in keeping the acid out of my tone. "I'm not too keen on that idea."
"Because you hate humans, right?" Kai stated, speaking for the first time and causing everyone in the room to quiet.
I looked at him then and again was unable to decipher the expression on his face, but it was clear that he was waiting for some type of response.
Everyone was.
"You're going to the Banquet, right?" Mel's mom asked, looking concerned.
I was happy I didn't have to answer Kai's question though. It would look bad if I said yes, but I couldn't lie to them.
"My parents are forcing me," I admitted.
"It's not too bad, the food there is great. And what if Jackson's right? What if you do end up meeting a promising Alpha?"
"Or human," Kai added, forcing me to curl my lip at him.
"Maybe, but probably not. We should really get going though, right you guys?" I looked at them all expectantly.
"Yeah! Let's go!" Melrose jumped at the opportunity to save me from any more embarrassing and awkward conversations that were bound to follow the first two.
"Have fun," her parents called out as we headed to the restaurant/lounge. Jackson had a driver take us. While Jackson and Mel sat next to each other in the front, I was forced to sit with Kai in the back.
Being so close to him was making my hormones act up. I was having trouble trying not to release them in such a closed space. His thigh brushed against my own. I don't think it was on purpose, but I pushed away from him, as far as possible, clenching my fist and smashing it against my lips. Not making a sound, I suffered in the corner.
Mel seemed to notice, shooting me a reassuring look before beginning a conversation that had both of the other guys engaged, not paying attention. Mel took that time to slip her hand to the back seat and pass me a tablet.
If I would have known that Kai was going to be there, I would have brought a stash of my own. Too late for that now.
I slipped the tablet in my mouth, sighing as it worked it's magic.
The tablet was a suppressor of sex hormones. I wasn't even near my estrous cycle so I wasn't really worried about it happening but sometimes, if an Omega is strongly attracted to an Alpha, they'll slip and release sex hormones, practically to drive the Alpha crazy and make them mate with each other. Otherwise, it's not a problem, the estrous cycle being an exception.
I was attracted to Kai, desperately so, and my hormones were going crazy. Even with the suppressor, some of my hormones still escaped.
Kai tensed and I knew he could smell it.
"I'm sorry," I murmured.
"That time of the year?" he asked.
"Yeah," I lied.
No way was I going to admit that I was attracted to him and desperately wanted him to knot me, filling me with his litter. No way in hell.
Kai nodded and I could see his sharp jaw clench. His nostrils were flaring rapidly and eyes flashing.
It was affecting him.
When Alpha's smell an Omega's hormones, they release some of their own. It's almost like ensuring dominance. It forces the Omega to want to submit and...prepares them.
I could feel a little moisture leak on to my briefs.
Fuck.
"Mel," I whispered to her urgently.
She looked back at me, sniffed, and then her eyes widened in shock. She pulled out two more tablets and handed it to me. I gulped them down quickly, letting out a relieved sigh when they worked quickly and efficiently. My hormones were no longer emitting.
Kai gave out a sigh of his own. I saw him visibly relax in his seat.
"We're here," Jackson announced, completely unaware of the events that took place in the back seat of his car. He jumped out, helping Mel. I climbed out of the backseat, but as I was standing to squeeze out, my ass was right in Kai's face. I could feel his nose skim along my backside as he took a quick sniff.
Oh my God.
So surprised by the action, I practically fell out of the car. I could not and would not look at him the whole time we were being seated. I noticed though, that there were only four table settings.
I glanced around suspiciously.
Kai was sitting across from me and while Jackson was sitting across from Melrose. We were in a secluded booth at the back of the restaurant with a curtain for privacy.
I looked at Mel who looked really guilty.
"Where is everybody?" I asked.
Jackson raised a brow in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"I thought this was a social gathering?"
Jackson blinked in confusion before glaring at Melrose who definitely looked guilty. Kai looked slightly embarrassed.
"You didn't tell him?" Jackson demanded of his future mate.
"He wouldn't have come if he knew!" Mel insisted.
That's when I realized what was going on.
She set me up...
...on a double date with Kai.
