"Kai?" I called out, finally letting my presence be known. "What's going on?"
Kai whipped around and stared at me in shock, "What are you doing in here?"
"I-I was looking for you and you weren't in the kitchen. Who was that?"
Kai swore under his breath, not looking at me. He seemed incredibly stressed and I had a feeling that that was one conversation I was not supposed to hear.
"It was nothing Drew, don't worry about it."
"But you were talking about leaving me..."
Kai's eyebrows shot up and he looked at me like he couldn't believe I even uttered those words. But that was what he said, wasn't it?
He rushed over to me, taking my face in his palms.
"What in Goddess's great name gave you that idea? I would never leave you. Not when I just got you. I'm not ever letting you go."
"But you just said—"
"You know the problem with eavesdropping? You never get the whole story," Kai smiled and it was gentle, just like him. Or the side of him that he ever let me see.
"Are you going to tell me the whole story?"
Kai sighed, letting go of my face. "I know I'm going to sound like the bad guy here but you know I can't tell you. It's Alpha business. Omegas aren't allowed to be included in the affairs, it's against the rules. I never wanted to be the type of Alpha or mate who had to live by those rules but it's just the way things are. I'm sorry for keeping this from you. I hate it, I really do, but I can't get you involved."
I stepped away from him...hurt.
"By the sound of it, I'm already involved," I sneered.
"Drew, don't. Don't pull away from me, please."
I glared at him.
"Is this the future I'm supposed to be looking forward to? A bunch of secrets? Kai, you're about to be my Mate, my husband for Goddess sakes! How am I supposed to live like this if I never know what's happening? If you're always keeping secrets? How is it fair that I can never keep secrets from you but you can keep them from me?"
"Drew we aren't equals. I'm the Alpha and you're the Omega. I don't want our relationship to be about me controlling you—and it won't be—but you're just going to have to accept that you can't get everything, despite how much I want to give it to you. This is just how our Society is, how Wolves are. I have to put my foot down about a few things and this is one of them."
Was he seriously going to do this to me?
Was I really going to be trapped in a relationship where I wouldn't have a say?
Goddess, I've cried so much already. I didn't want to keep at it, but I just couldn't help the tears as they spilled out of my eyes.
"How am I ever supposed to trust you?" I whispered.
Kai's jaw dropped in shock.
"You don't trust me?"
"I did," I choked, "But now? I don't know anymore."
"Come on Drew, this relationship can't be broken already. We haven't even made it official yet."
"I told you from the start that this would never work out."
Kai looked heartbroken.
"Drew," he said softly.
"Goddess, I knew this was too good to be true. I've loved you for so long and you've turned out to be—" I froze when I realized my mistake. My gaze whipped towards Kai to see if he caught it and by the way he was looking at me...I knew he did.
"What did you just say?"
Shit!
"Nothing! I—"
"You loved me?"
I panicked and tried to bolt, but he grabbed my wrist and I slammed back into his chest...trapped. Sobs wracked my body as I crumpled in his arms.
"How long?" he asked softly, pressing my back firmly against his chest as he held me from behind.
All of the little Alphas crowded around the helpless little Omega who curled into a ball trying to cover his head.
"Get up!" one of the Alpha boys screamed at the Omega. Unable to defy an Alpha's command, the little Omega struggled to his feet. His eyes were watery and his normally neat black locks were a mess on his head.
"Take your shirt off!" an Alpha female commanded, sneering at the boy.
The Omega hesitated and the Alpha female grabbed his hair in a tight fist. He cried out in pain, falling to his knees and at her mercy.
"When we get older, I'm gonna breed you with my pups, then lock you up til you die. You hear me, runt?" She sneered at him, before throwing him on the ground.
"Take off his pants!" he heard one of them shout.
Hands started grabbing at him from all angles. He struggled to get away but there was no way that a weak Omega like him could ever escape so many Alphas.
"Hey!" a voice shouted from a distance.
The Omega looked up at the most beautiful boy he had ever seen, with sleek raven black hair, and big emerald green eyes that sparkled. He was an Alpha and a little bit older than the others.
"What are you doing to him?"
"Kai!" Someone shouted in surprise.
"Well?" the Alpha named Kai demanded. The Omega stared at him in awe.
Kai noticed and approached the Omega, crouching down to his level. He brushed the leaves and dirt out of the small boy's hair and smiled.
"You're a pretty one, aren't you?" he said softly.
The Omega was so awestruck, he couldn't even speak properly.
Kai stood up and turned to the other smaller Alphas.
"This Omega is going to be my mate one day, touch him and you're dead," he threatened. All the younger Alphas nodded in fear before running off. Ever since then, the Omega couldn't get the strong Alpha out of his head.
When the Omega started middle school, finally sharing the same learning grounds as the Alpha who saved him, it was clear that the Alpha never remembered his promise.
And when the Omegas and Alphas split in high school, the Omega fell completely off the Alpha's radar. He didn't give up hope though. He just watched him from afar and let his love for him grow.
"I can't believe I never noticed. I'm so sorry Drew," Kai apologized, never letting me out of his hold.
"I didn't expect you to," I answered softly. My voice was hoarse from all of the crying.
"But I managed to keep my promise, right? You're going to be my mate and I'll always protect you from harm. It has to be fate, right?"
I didn't answer him.
Fate seemed a little fucked up to me.
