Twelve—
After things calmed down, Kai dismissed Stonem and Robin from the meeting. He said looking at them made him want to kill them. As soon as they left, I felt a lot better.
We ended up transferring to another room within the facility so the Alphas could discuss things and the Omegas could relax. The next room was much cozier. It reminded me of a vacation cabin, of course without the windows. It was a fully functioning mansion under here.
The Omegas stayed in the living room. It was clear that the others were familiar with each other. I never really had friends growing up, besides Mel who was the only one allowed where the Alphas were right now because she needed Jackson. I was feeling a bit lonely, watching them all joke around with each other.
"So you're the one who has big bad Alpha Kai wrapped around his finger," Cal smirked, leaning back on his chair with his arms folded across his chest.
"Big bad Alpha Kai?" I raised a brow, "He's the sweetest guy on earth, there's nothing big and bad about him."
All of the Omegas busted out in laughter. Pyka laughed so hard he started tearing.
"He just lost his shit in there and you don't think he's big and bad? He must be so whipped!"
"That was the first time I ever really saw him lose his temper," I admitted, not sure how to process this new information. Was I really that clueless about my mate? Was he really that terrifying when I'm not around?
"He's the top Alpha in the running to be an Elder when he Passes Over. You can't possibly think he managed that and remained a gentle giant, did you?" Cal asked.
"He's actually quite terrifying. He came over once and tossed Talon around like it was nothing," Sherry informed in a quiet voice.
"Kai isn't scary at all," I argued, getting a little peeved at the way they were talking about my Alpha. Kai was the perfect mate and I'd defend his reputation.
"You know, I'm not really surprised it was you that ended up taming him," Pyka said suddenly, those brown eyes twinkling with mischief. "Drew Lyall, the untouchable Omega. Always outsmarting people and standing up for helpless Omegas against the mean Alphas. If anyone was going to be Kai Hemming's mate, it was going to be you."
I shifted uncomfortably. That's the second time I heard that. The 'Untouchable Omega' title that seemed to follow me around.
"Why does everyone keep saying that? When did I become the Untouchable Omega? I'm not even high rank, not like you guys...I'm kind of a nobody."
"You really don't know, do you?" Pyka sat up, more amused than before.
"Ever wonder why you never really had friends in school?" Cal questioned.
"I figured it was because I was of low rank."
"Actually quite the opposite. All the Alphas wanted you. You had the body, you had the brains, but you ignored every attempt of an Alpha trying to woo you. Even my Brynn had her eye on you before she found me. It irritated everyone. You were so nonchalant and while all of us Omegas were fighting to get the attention of the high ranked Alphas, you swatted them away like flies."
I snorted, "That's not true at all. I've been trying for years to get an Alpha to notice me, no one ever took interest."
"Or you simply were oblivious because you had your eye on someone already," Pyka interjected, looking at me levelly. He knew. I could tell from the weight of his stare; that he knew.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said stupidly.
"Don't play dumb. You were in love with Kai from the beginning. I use to watch you stare at him all throughout middle school. When we got to high school and the Alphas and Omegas split...you were heart broken."
I blushed and looked away.
"So that's it! You had no idea because you were so focused on Kai! It all makes sense now!" Cal exclaimed as if he solved the murder of the mystery.
"So now what? What's the point of figuring that out?" I snapped, not liking how they were all trying to dissect me.
"Well now...we won't hate you. Now that that's all cleared up, we're not worried that you'll steal our Alphas away from us. You don't look like you'll ever leave his side."
"How could you even think I could? A mating is permanent and lasts forever. There is no way to break it," I protested.
"Everything can be broken," Sherry said softly.
"Yeah, you better keep that in mind and hope that whatever you were injected with by Stonem doesn't affect your ability to bear children. You'll be pretty useless if you can't," Pyka stated with serious but sad smile.
I stiffened.
My ability to bear children? It can't possibly be affected...right? Why didn't I think of that before? What if I can't have pups? No way! That can't happen!
Can it?
"Aw look, you made him cry!" Sherry scolded, jumping up and sitting next to me so he could put his arms around my shoulders. I didn't actually notice I was crying, but the twin trails left my face itchy and irritated. "They are just messing with you, you're probably fine. Robin said it was to help right?"
I rubbed my eyes and laughed bitterly.
"That human bitch hates me just as much as I hate her. She'd rather see me become the laughing stock of the Community before she'd ever help me," I sneered. "She wants Kai for herself."
"I'm sure they'll figure out what she did and find a solution," Sherry insisted, trying to cheer me up. I appreciated the gesture, but it wasn't really helping.
Just then, Kai walked into the room looking every inch of a dominating Alpha I just found out him to be.
"Drew, come with me."
I got up immediately and followed him into the room with the Alphas. They were all staring at me and it was making me uncomfortable. The human, Vince, was also analyzing me and it was freaking me out. My eyes drifted over to Mel who was sleeping comfortably in Jackson's arms.
"If you remember anything from that night, tell us. Do you know what the solution looked like? What exactly you were feeling when you were injected?"
"I just remember answering the door and seeing Robin and...Stonem at the door. I didn't see the syringe until after they injected me. It had a golden yellow liquid in it. As soon as he removed the needle my body went numb and I felt like I was floating. My mind wouldn't focus on anything and I couldn't speak. I just laid there until Kai found me."
"Check his neck, see if there are any abnormalities," Talon said.
"I've seen his neck a million times since then, nothing out of the ordinary," Kai breathed in slight frustration.
"And those scratches on his arms?" Brynn jerked her chin at my welts. I covered them self-consciously.
"Bad heat," I whispered.
Brynn looked apologetic.
"How long ago was this?" Talon asked.
I looked up at Kai.
"About a week."
"And you have experienced no symptoms?" Talon directed this question towards me.
"No," I replied hesitantly.
"So there's no physical damage and no symptoms. How are we supposed to figure out what they put in him if there's no evidence?" Brynn growled in a frustrated manner.
Kai seemed ultimately the most stressed. I was worried and couldn't keep myself from thinking about what Pyka said. Would he still want me if I couldn't give him any pups?
Another tear escaped my eye and once that one left, the rest of them came tumbling out like some depressing waterfall. Kai hugged me close soothing my hair back and whispering promises that everything would be alright.
"Go back to with the Omegas. We'll figure something out," he told me softly, kissing my forehead. I nodded and left the room, closing the door behind him.
The Omegas quieted when I came back into the room. I plopped down on the couch and rubbed my eyes clear.
"What happened?" Sherry asked.
"They just wanted to know what happened to me. They're trying to figure out how the injection is and will affect me."
"See? They're working on it. My Talon is one of the smartest Alphas in the Community and he's head of the medical facility."
I nodded my head.
"I'll be fine," I breathed.
"And if there is something wrong with you, Brynn will slaughter them all for you," Cal swore giving a dark and twisted smile. It was slightly unnerving, but I appreciated the gesture.
"Thank you," I whispered.
The Alphas filed into the room again. Sherry jumped up and ran into Talon's arms. His eyes as wide as saucers and so filled with love for his Alpha. The huge man smiled back at him, running his fingers through the smaller man's hair. Cal sauntered over to Brynn with a grin, she wrapped her arms around his waist and nuzzled his nose. Nick came over to Pyka, whose entire demeanor switched up. No longer was he the sassy Omega with nick for getting under peoples' skin, he was the perfect submissive.
Jackson was already leaving with Mel who was still sleeping. Kai offered his hand and I took it eagerly. We all left the facility at different times so as not to raise suspicion. When we finally got home, Kai noticed that I was uncharacteristically quiet.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," I mumbled, straightening up the room. I needed to keep myself busy and my mind off the possibilities.
"Drew, what's going on?"
"Nothing," I insisted, my movements getting erratic. This place was a mess. I thought I just cleaned up yesterday. There is clothes everywhere and dust. And I know I put those books away this morning.
"Drew, put the books down and talk to me. If this is about the injection, you don't need to worry about it—"
I didn't want to think about it. I just had to keep cleaning. Everything will be better once the place is clean. I fixed the bed, fixed the sheets, fluffed the pillows. I tried to neaten everything up like it was supposed to be, but for some reason, it didn't look right. Nothing looked right!
I had to fix it.
"Drew!" Kai grabbed my arms and restrained me. I kicked and writhed, trying to get out of his hold but he was an Alpha and huge compared to me.
"Drew, you're going to be okay—"
"And what if I'm not?" I screamed, squeezing his arms that bound me. "What if I can't have children anymore?"
Kai dropped my arms and backed away. I turned to look at his stricken expression.
"What?" he choked out.
I took a deep shaky breath before speaking. "What if the injection disabled my ability to reproduce? What if it damaged my womb somehow...my eggs? Without that...I'm nothing. And you won't want me anymore."
"Drew how could you think that? After all we've been through, how could you think I would just abandon you like that? That I wouldn't want you anymore?"
"Because an Omegas entire existence is dedicated to reproduction! What good am I if I can't give you children? A defective Omega is a useless Omega!"
"You are not defective and there is nothing wrong with your womb. If they did affect it somehow, we'll find a way to fix it."
I shook my head and stepped around him, heading to the bathroom, but he grabbed my arm, stopping me from leaving.
"I made a vow to never let anything happen to you," he said softly.
"You aren't invincible Kai, you can't save me from everything."
"Watch me."
