I creeped over to the window curtain, bracing myself before I peeled it back. A face stared right back at me, only a few inches from the glass. By the looks of it, it was a human and he was not a friendly one. I reeled back from the window and hurried to lock the door. I locked all of the windows and went around the house blocking any entrance that they could possibly get in from.
"Drew, you're freaking us out, what's going on?" Cal demanded.
I was just a little panicked. Okay, maybe a lot. There was something about that human that just really rubbed me wrong. His eyes, they were dark and cold, they reminded me of...Stonem.
"Call your Alphas!" I shouted, my voice trembling.
"Drew—"
"Just do it!"
Sherry and Pyka jumped before immediately taking out their phones and dialing their Alphas. Cal just looked at me suspiciously.
I rubbed my arms, checking all of the windows again. I saw two more shadows dart past and immediately felt sick to my stomach.
I need to call Kai.
I tried to get out my phone but my hands were shaking like crazy. I nearly dropped the device several times.
Damn it!
I can't even get my fingers to work!
"Shit!" I swore, trying desperately to get to Kai's name in my contacts.
Hands grabbed my phone out of mine and scrolled through the list of names. I looked up and saw Cal. He handed me back the phone and I noticed that it was dialing Kai. He pulled out his own phone, shooting me a very steely look. I didn't even have the chance to respond because Kai picked up.
"Drew? What's wrong?"
"Kai, there are humans outside. They're surrounding the house and trying to get in. I don't know what to do. They're not normal humans Kai. Something is off with them," I whispered into the phone. There was a loud bang at the door. I jumped. "Kai please get here!"
"Shit!" I heard him swear, then he was barking out orders. "Listen to me Drew, are you alone?"
I shook my head, then realized he couldn't see it. "No, Sherry, Pyka, and Cal are here."
Kai swore again.
"Alright, follow my directions very carefully. Gather the Omegas and go down into the basement. Go inside the room, you know which one I'm talking about. Lock the door and do not let anyone who knocks on the door inside. When you get down there, there will be a little square in the wall next to the right side of the bed. Tap on it twice and it should open. There will be a green button, a blue button, and a red button. I want you to press the green one twice okay? Do you understand?"
"Yes," I whispered.
"Okay, do that as soon as possible and I will get there as fast as I can."
"Okay."
"I love you, Drew. Don't do anything reckless."
"I won't and I love you too," I promised before hanging up the phone. I looked at the others who were huddled around me waiting for me to tell them what was going on. "We need to go," I told them. I was just about to direct them to the basement when there was an incessant banging on the front door.
"That's Talon!" Sherry cried happily, running to the door.
"No! Don't open the door!" I screamed seeing more shadows outside. But Sherry got there quicker than I could, he opened the door and a huge man barreled inside knocking the poor Omega over. Sherry's head slammed into the stone floor, successfully knocking him out cold. The man straddled Sherry and pulled out a syringe.
Shit!
I slammed my body against the door, closing and locking it, before landing a roundhouse kick to his head. The man flew off to the side but it didn't really do that much.
"Go to the basement! It's down the hall and the first door on the left! Go to the back room, it will have a metal door! It unlocks with an Omega's touch!" I shouted at them. Pyka looked too panicked to understand what I was saying but Cal had a very serious expression. He gave a nod, running to pick Sherry up and grabbing Pyka's hand. They disappeared down the hall.
I turned my attention back to the human.
He stood up and growled at me. There was something in the sound that made me question if he was human at all. When his eyes flashed gold and his teeth grew into fangs, I realized that he was indeed not human. But what was he? He wasn't a Wolf. I would know my own kind.
The creature cracked his neck before giving a sniff in my direction. His nose wrinkled and brow furrowed.
"No scent?" he muttered in confusion. I took that opportunity to lunge. I went for his jugular but he swatted me away like a fly. My back hit the wall painfully.
He was strong. Much stronger than a human. Stronger than me even.
I have a really bad feeling about this.
The man tapped the needle of the syringe and grinned at me before running at me. I rolled over, dodging his attack before sweeping his legs out from under him.
There has to be a way to knock him out so I can get downstairs. I looked all around until I saw one of the statues in the corner. It was a marble wolf. Without a seconds' hesitation, I dove for it, swinging it around and catching the man in the head before he could stick me with the needle. I grabbed the syringe out of his hand and made a run for it. He was still groaning on the floor when I ran, giving me just enough time to place my hand on the metal door and slipping inside the safe room.
They were all waiting there for me, terrified out of their minds, but I couldn't stop to comfort them. My job wasn't over yet. I ran to the bedside and searched the wall for a square. Finally, I found it. It was small and very hard to spot but I managed. Tapping it, the square swung open and revealed the buttons that Kai was telling me about. Locating the green one, I pushed it twice.
The ground shook and in the corner of the room, a small section sunk in, revealing a little door. I didn't dare go near it, just huddled with the Omegas on the bed. Pyka was shaking like crazy and Sherry's eyes were tearing up.
"What is that?" Cal asked, pointing to the syringe I placed on the night stand.
"I don't know. It's whatever that creature was trying to stick Sherry with."
"Creature? Don't you mean human?"
I shook my head. "Whatever that thing was...it wasn't human. Nor was it Wolf. It was a different species entirely."
Cal grimaced.
Suddenly there was a banging on the main door.
Everyone tensed.
"Kai said not to open it."
The banging continued, getting more violent by the second until very abruptly, it stopped. We waited in tense silence until the door that appeared on the ground opened. I panicked until I saw Kai pulling himself up and inside. His clothes were torn and bloodied but there was no real injuries in sight. I gasped in relief, running and throwing myself in his arms.
He held me tightly against him, whispering sweet nothings. I felt like crying but something in me just couldn't. I was too happy in his arms.
"You're trembling," he noted softly. And I was; viciously. "It's okay now, you're safe."
I nodded against his chest then saw the other Alphas climbing through the door on the floor. Each of their Omegas ran to them and embraced them just as I was embracing Kai.
After we settled down. Kai led us out of the basement. The man that I fought was nowhere in sight. I sighed in relief knowing that Kai took care of it.
We all sat in the living room.
"So tell us what happened," Brynn said.
Cal piped up to explain what he knew. "We were fine and just talking until Drew just froze all of a sudden. He was staring at the window and when we asked what was going on, he just said not to answer the door or go near the windows. Then he disappeared. When he came back he was panicking, telling us to call our Alphas." Brynn stopped the rest of his story with a squeeze to his arm.
"It seems like we are missing important parts to the story. Drew? Mind filling us in?" She said calmly. Cal frowned for a second but then erased all emotion from his face. That worried me but I didn't have the time to think about it.
"Cal was right. We were talking and I just happened to glance at the window but when I did, I saw something run across. It reminded me of the time when I was out and I saw someone sneaking around my neighbor's house. When I followed them, I got a bad feeling so I didn't pursue them anymore."
"What do you mean you saw someone sneaking around? When was this?" Kai demanded.
"Kai, after," Talon stated curtly then nodded his head at me to continue.
"I knew that it was someone lurking around the house and I wasn't sure if I locked all the doors and I knew if whoever it was got in, we'd be in danger. Especially Pyka since he's—" I cut myself off abruptly, looking at Nick in alarm. I didn't mean to blurt that out.
"What about Pyka?" Nick demanded, hazel eyes narrowed dangerously.
"After," Kai mocked.
Nick growled at him but Brynn ushered me to continue.
"I went to check the back door and windows in the kitchen. When I peeled back the curtain, there was a man's face right near the glass. So I panicked and started locking all of the doors and windows. I went back to tell everyone to call their Alphas and when I looked at the window again, there were two more shadows that darted past. And they were banging on the doors trying to get in. That's when I called Kai," I explained.
"Want to tell me why I found a man passed out in front of the stairs?" Kai inquired with a very stern expression. I gulped.
"Well, when the man started banging on the door Sherry thought it was Talon, so he ran to open it and I wasn't fast enough to stop him. One of them got inside and knocked Sherry out and tried to stick him with a syringe so I fought him and told everyone to go to the basement. When I was able to buy enough time to get to the basement, I ran to the safe room and followed your instructions."
"Sherry!" Talon gasped, pulling the redheaded Omega into his arms and burying his face into his hair. It was the first time that I realized how much Omegas mean to their Alphas. Talon actually looked terrified at the thought of Sherry being so close to danger.
"I told you not to be reckless!"
"If I didn't do something, he was going to hurt Sherry! And probably the rest of us too! I couldn't let that happen when I had the power to do something about it!" I protested.
"But that's just it! You don't have the power! You're just an Omega, you could've been killed!"
I wanted to argue more but I saw the worry swirling in those frantic green eyes and I knew I couldn't be mad. He was worried and scared that I was in danger and he wasn't there to protect me.
"What's that in your hand?" Brynn asked.
I looked down at the syringe I managed to grab before we came up here.
"It's the syringe the man was going to inject Sherry with. I managed to grab it before I got to the basement."
Kai growled at my recklessness.
"I'll take that back to the lab so we can analyze its contents," Talon said. I passed him the syringe.
Brynn stood up angrily.
"This is getting ridiculous! Not even our own homes are safe! They are getting bolder and we aren't doing a damn thing about it! Sherry could've been taken, then what? Who's next?" She exclaimed angrily.
"Brynn," Nick warned, looking at us Omegas pointedly. "We can't discuss this in front of them."
"Bullshit! I'm sick of all these rules! Screw the Elders! Keeping the Omegas in the dark is probably doing more harm than good. If they knew what was happening, they wouldn't be so vulnerable. They could protect themselves."
"They shouldn't be protecting themselves. It's our job as their Alphas to protect them. Their job is to provide us with children and—"
As if on cue, Pyka slapped a hand over his mouth, jumped up, and made a mad dash towards the bathroom.
"Pyka?" Nick jumped up and followed his mate who I could hear puking his guts. I sighed and shared a look with the other Omegas.
It was going to be hard for Pyka to hide it from him now.
I could hear them murmuring to each other quietly and suddenly it stopped. A few moments later, Nick and Pyka came back into the room. Nick's expression was a bit shocked and Pyka looked very sad. Nick sat down on the couch and pulled Pyka on to his lap. Everyone was quiet.
"He's pregnant," Nick deadpanned.
Kai sat up in shock. Each of the Alphas were surprised but the Omegas already knew.
"Holy shit! Congratulations!" Brynn cheered. "How far along?"
Pyka was quiet until Nick gave him a pointed look.
"Four weeks," he mumbled.
"Four weeks? You kept this from me for four fucking weeks?" Nick was livid and I automatically felt bad for Pyka.
"I'm sorry! It's just you were so stressed and I didn't want to make it worse—" Pyka tried to explain.
"So you thought I didn't have to right to know that I was going to be a father? Dear Goddess, Pyka! You have to tell me these things!"
Pyka started crying and immediately Nick's expression softened—something I never thought possible—as he tried to calm his mate down.
"You knew?" Kai asked me.
I nodded my head.
"He just told us before that whole thing happened."
"So that's what you were referring to before?"
I nodded again.
Kai sighed, leaning back on the couch and throwing and arm over my shoulders so I was tucked into his side.
"You did a good job," he said suddenly.
My head jerked up in shock.
"While I don't approve of you being so reckless, you protected them. That makes me proud to be your mate and happy that I have someone as strong as you for mine."
I warmed at the praise.
"It's too dangerous," Brynn said softly, almost to herself. Her features were scrunched up in tension which immediately alerted Cal. Cal rubbed his Alpha's shoulders, offering comfort.
"We can't just hide them away. People will get suspicious."
"I'm sure they won't notice. Not with everything going on. No one even comes out of their houses anymore which is probably why the humans resorted to breaking in."
Humans...
"That man...he wasn't human," I said quietly. Attention fell on me again. I spoke clearer this time. "When I was fighting that man, he was stronger than me. Way stronger than me and I'm stronger than humans so that was my first clue. Then when he was trying to inject me with the syringe, his eyes flashed gold and he grew fangs. Whatever he is, it's not human. Not Wolf either."
None of the Alphas looked surprised at this information which led me to believe they already knew. That and much more but of course they weren't sharing.
"Call Jackson, tell him to get Mel and we're moving the Omegas into the hideout," Kai said finally.
"What?" I exclaimed.
"It's not safe for you here. You guys are way too important and we need to make sure you're protected."
"But what about my family?"
"They'll be fine."
"Kai—"
"Drew, trust me."
I searched his eyes frantically and saw nothing but resolve. I sighed in defeat.
"Moving them now and all at the same time will be very suspicious. We need to move one at a time. Pyka first since he's the most vulnerable. Then Cal and Melrose. Sherry will have to wait a while because he'll be needed at the medical facility and notice his absence. I'll take Drew down in a few weeks."
And just like that, our calm and peaceful future went up in flames.
