My hands acted on their own, throwing anything that was in reach. I completely trashed the room before Kai, Nick, and Mel came running into the room.
"What the hell?" I heard Mel whisper, taking in all of the damage.
Kai grabbed my arms, locking me against his chest so I couldn't throw anything else. I screamed and thrashed. He struggled to get a secure grip on me until all of my strength just left me. I fell to my knees and sobbed.
Kai didn't say anything because he knew, he just hugged me, rocking me back and forth, stroking my hair.
"What the hell is going on?" Nick demanded.
"Drew?" Melrose called out to me softly.
I ignored them.
"Mel, can you go get Sherry?" I heard Kai ask.
I pulled away from him violently, but his grip was like iron, he wouldn't release me. "No! No, don't you bring him! No! No!" I beat at his chest but he only gave Mel a nod to go ahead.
"No Kai!" I cried, even more hysterical than before.
Talon and Sherry came into the room a little later. As if he already knew, Sherry had his medical bag with him. The couple was staring at me with concern.
"I need you to check and see if he's pregnant or if there is any damage to his womb and eggs," Kai told them. Sherry nodded but I didn't let him get close.
I kicked and bit at Kai who had to shove me down and completely restrain me with his body above mine, forcing me to look into his eyes.
It hurt staring into those emerald depths and knowing I was never going to be able to provide him with a family. That I was useless to him.
Sherry pulled out his equipment, preparing to extract a sample of blood from my arm. At this point, I had given up, just crying and waiting for it to be over. There was little prick of pain as I felt the needle enter my skin, but after that nothing but the coolness of him wiping away the excess blood with an alcohol wipe.
"I'll take this into the lab and see if his wCG levels are high. When he's calmed down we can do an ultrasound to how his womb is."
Kai nodded.
"Don't make me, Kai," I begged.
"I can't stand seeing you like this. If we have to get proof to show that you're fine then we'll get it. I don't want suffering in any way."
I turned my head away from him.
I didn't want to do this. I didn't want to see the cold hard truth. They can tell me all they want that technology is a stone cold truth but a mother's intuition is stronger. I know my body and I know that I'm not pregnant. Once the tests fail, they'll realize it, but I don't want to experience the pain of having reality shoved into my face. My heart can't take it. I don't know how it will affect me.
They just didn't understand.
"Thank you Sherry, let me know as soon as you get the results," Kai said, dismissing everyone from the room. He picked me up and carried me to the bed. "Look at me Drew."
I refused, staying curled up in a ball with my back facing him. He moved closer behind me until his whole body cupped mine.
"There is nothing wrong with you, okay? Getting pregnant isn't going to happen immediately. It takes time."
"It's been weeks," I sniffled. "There is no way I couldn't be pregnant by now. Not without something being wrong with me."
"What can I do to make you see that there is nothing wrong with you?" Kai groaned in frustration.
"Get me pregnant!" I yelled, clenching my jaw and biting back every wild emotion that was trying to take root inside me.
It wasn't Kai's fault. He was only trying to help, to reassure me, but I was taking it out on him. I didn't want to. I didn't want him to feel like it's his fault. It's my own. I never should have opened that damn door!
He was quiet behind me. I almost forgot he was there as my thoughts started to overwhelm me. But then he moved, his hands whispering over the curve of my hip. His lips planted themselves right behind my ear.
"I will then," he whispered.
I turned to look at him curiously but he had other things in mind. He pulled me on top of him so I straddled his waist. He stared up at me with a very serious expression. "We won't leave this room until you are round with my litter."
I stared at him in shock, "Kai, we can't—"
He was having none of my protest. He tugged off my clothes along with his own before pulling me back into the position above him. I probably looked disgusting, all swollen and red after crying so much, it was putting me out of the mood. Kai seemed to notice and unleashed his hormones like a hellhound.
I choked, falling against his chest as the lust overcame me. He was hardening up underneath me.
"I swear to you that we'll have a family," he vowed as he slipped inside of me. "I swear."
I didn't say a thing, just let him prove to me that there was hope for us yet.
*
"Don't wake him up," I heard Kai say. He sounded far away. I wanted to open my eyes but I was still too tired and they were way too heavy.
"I wanted to let you know the test results."
It was Talon.
I perked up, trying to fight through the grogginess but my body wasn't cooperating with my request. So I laid there and listened to the murky voices.
"Is he pregnant?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?" Kai demanded in a hushed angry voice.
"For some reason we can't get a read on him, the machines aren't reacting properly to his blood samples. The feedback was all jumbled up."
"Then the machine is probably broken!"
"I thought that at first but when we ran Pyka and Sherry's blood, their data came up just fine."
Kai swore.
"That's not all. We found something strange in his bloodwork. I think you should come down and take a look at it."
The voices grew further and further away. Or that could just be me falling back into unconsciousness. I wanted to wake up, but my body had other plans.
*
"Drew, wake up love."
I heard him but didn't respond. Way too tired.
"I know you hear me," he chuckled. "Come on, wake up. You've been out for nearly two days."
I jumped up at that. Looking around I saw it was night time already. I couldn't have slept for over twenty four hours, could I?
Kai kissed my forehead before pushing a plate of delicious looking spaghetti into my lap. The smell was amazing, I nearly inhaled it in three minutes flat.
"I could go get you some more?"
I shook my head. "I want to take a shower." Getting up, I headed to the bathroom. My body ached terribly, but it felt too good under the spray of the shower. I washed and dried, brushed my teeth, and freshened up. Kai was gone from the room when I came to get dressed. Putting on my own clothes for a change, I dressed in a pair a gray sweatpants and black tank. My nipples were still incredibly raw.
When I came into the living area, the Omegas were laughing about something. As soon as I approached, they stopped and stared at me.
"How are you feeling?" Mel asked bravely.
I shrugged and plopped down next to her. She leaned on my shoulder and continued her conversation with the others.
"Pyka, you're being ridiculous."
"What? All I'm saying is that we should just eat them. It would save us a hell of a lot of stress. We could do it at the Human-Wolf Banquet," Pyka shrugged, looking very pleased with his plan. I raised an eyebrow at Mel.
"Pyka, we can't eat the humans," Cal sighed.
"You sure? I know I can. I'm eating for four now."
I couldn't help but groan.
"How could they still be having that stupid Banquet after all the crap they pulled? It's like they're saying 'hey, we just shit on your entire existence, but let's have a feast to keep the peace.' Such bullshit," I complained.
"We have to go though," Sherry said softly. "If we don't show up, it will be an insult to our families as well as our ancestors who started the treaty in the first place."
The Omegas sighed in unison, deflating against the couches.
"So we really have to go, don't we?"
Sherry nodded sadly.
"Well, we have time to mentally prepare. It's in what? A week?"
"Four days to be exact."
"Yikes!"
My stomach grumbled and as if on cue, Kai came in with a tall glass of juice and another plate of spaghetti. Nick was right on his heels with the same meal for Pyka. Pyka was always hungry so of course he was going to have seconds. I on the other hand, have apparently been sleeping for more than twenty four hours, which means I haven't eaten in a day so I was ravenous.
"Thank you," I said to him as I finished my second plate. Sherry was staring at me oddly though. When I caught his stare, he looked away immediately.
Weird.
"Do we really have to go to the banquet?" I whined to Kai.
"Yes, we do. I already had your suit tailored and it will be here tomorrow morning."
I grumbled, sinking into his side. He chuckled. "Don't sulk, it won't be that bad. The food will be great remember? It will make up for your distaste for humans."
"Nothing could make up my distaste for humans."
Kai laughed, kissing my cheek.
"I want to go for a run, can you come with me?" I asked Kai sweetly. I knew that we weren't allowed to leave the hideout but staying cooped up down here was not healthy. I needed to stretch my legs and I was aching to feel the wind in my fur. But Kai looked a little unsure. I was prepared for him to say no, but instead he took me by surprise.
"Okay, but you stay with me at all times. No venturing off on your own."
I nodded eagerly, then went to stand up. But as I stood, the world tilted and I felt incredibly dizzy all of a sudden. Kai caught me before I could tip over. His expression twisted in concern.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded slowly, but tried to blink past the blurriness in my vision.
What the hell?
"Are you sure you're okay? You look pale."
"I'm fine. I guess I just got up too fast. It was a little dizzying but I'm okay now."
Kai didn't look convinced but helped me out of the room. As we past, my eyes fell on Sherry. He was giving me that weird look again.
Like something was wrong.
