Fifteen—
Goddess, it felt so good to just run. As intelligent as our species is, we are still creatures of the sun, bound by the earth. It was in our nature to revel in the beauty of the outdoors. The earth gave us strength.
I was really sad when Kai said it was time to head back. He trotted very close to my side the entire way there. His coat brushing up against mine. It was almost as if he were Scent-Rolling me. I swear, he's never satisfied unless I reek of him.
He doesn't need to worry about anyone else stealing me from him, I was his forever.
When we got back, she was there. Dressed in a brown leather tunic and bright green tights. As ugly as her outfit was, her hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail. No outrageous colors or styles to match.
She looked up at our approach. I snarled at her.
Kai nuzzled my hair before sending me off with the other Omegas while he talked to her. I couldn't focus though, my entire being was zeroed in on their conversation. I couldn't hear them but I could see them. I had to make sure she didn't try to pull any crap.
"Stare any harder and you'll pull a muscle," Nick snorted.
I growled at him which he returned with one much more ferocious.
Alpha.
Right.
"Why is she even here? What business does a human have with Wolves?" Pyka asked. Somewhere along the lines, Melrose and I converted him to our human hating side. Omegas never really liked humans to begin with because they were always trying to take our Alphas away from us. But what was a little dislike developed into full blown loathing.
"We need her, that's all you need to know," Nick said firmly.
Pyka looked like he was about to say something but his face contorted in pain. He doubled over, hand over his swollen stomach.
"Pyka, what's wrong?" Nick demanded, instantly worried.
"It hurts," he gasped. "Sharp pains."
Nick's head snapped over at Sherry who seemed calm despite what was happening. "What's wrong with him?"
"Relax, his body is adjusting to cater to his babies. He will experience cramps like this every once in a while. They will grow more severe the closer he gets to delivery. Just gently rub his stomach. When the babies get old enough to hear, talk to them, read to them, play music. Interaction helps."
Pyka sucked in a breath, breathing heavily.
Nick rubbed his stomach is soothing circles, whispering in his ears, "You're okay. Everything is okay. You're strong, you can fight through the pain."
After a few moments, Pyka relaxed. Nick didn't stop massaging his stomach though, but the atmosphere went back to being carefree.
Though not for long.
Cal came storming into the room with Brynn hot on his heels. I didn't notice until he came straight up to me and backhanded me so hard I saw stars.
Kai was there in an instant, pushing me behind him and ready to tear into the white haired Omega. Cal didn't look fazed though, his pale green eyes were fixed on me and they were furious.
"Caleb, you are taking this too far!" Brynn said to her mate but he wasn't listening.
"She's mine. You got that? Why can't you just be happy with your own mate? Why do you have to steal mine away from?" Cal growled, his eyes watering.
I gaped at him.
"What are you talking about?"
"Cal! You're being ridiculous!" Brynn yelled at him, but she wasn't using her Alpha hormones. It was almost like she didn't want to make him submit. She was probably smart for doing that, Cal would probably get even more pissed and matters would just get worse.
"I'm not! Stay away from my Brynn!"
"I haven't even done anything!" I protested, very confused.
A tear managed to spill over and run down his flushed face. With a face that oozed betrayal, he ran off.
"I'm sorry Kai, Drew," Brynn apologized before running after her angered mate.
"What the heck just happened?" Nick demanded, breaking the pregnant silence. Excuse the pun.
Everyone just kind of stared at me, but I was just as lost as they were. I shrugged, "I don't know what's going on or what he's even talking about."
"Remember what we said about the Omegas being jealous of you in school? Well, it could be because Brynn praised you. That really rubbed him the wrong way. He's terrified that you'll steal Brynn away from him," Pyka explained.
"But I thought we already established that I'm happy with Kai? I'm never leaving him for anyone else. Fifteen years of love won't let me."
Pyka shrugged.
"Who truly understands an Omega's heart?"
I sighed.
There were never truer words.
"Let's just drop it. Sherry, we need to speak with you," Kai said. I frowned when he said 'we' then looked past him at Robin.
Ugh.
She's like a roach! Just die already!
Sherry got up and left the room with Robin and Kai. I was itching to follow them because I had a very strong feeling they were going to discuss something that had to do me. I glanced over at Nick and Pyka who cuddling on the couch. They seemed preoccupied which allowed me to slip out of the room and follow Kai and the others. I leaned outside the door of the lab and listened to them.
"It doesn't make any sense. None of his readings are coming out clearly. And there is an unknown element flowing through his veins."
That was Kai.
"I'm telling you I don't think it is affecting his eggs or his womb."
That was Robin.
"He's been really tired lately and he almost fainted earlier."
"It could be a side effect of whatever he was injected with. If I could just analyze the contents then I could figure out what's wrong."
And that was Sherry.
"I can't do that. I'm sorry. If I try to get another sample, they'll notice and kill me. We can't risk it," Robin said.
"Just tell us what you gave him!" Kai snapped.
"Just know that I'm trying to help you, okay? The injection will help him in the long run, trust me."
"Why Drew? Why did you have go after him?"
There was a small silence before a quiet sigh. "Personal reasons and he's probably the most vulnerable. One look at him and they'll be able to tell he has powerful genes. He'll be a top target and trust me when I say, they'll take him."
Kai growled.
Take me?
Who are they talking about? And what do they mean I have powerful genes? There was nothing out of the ordinary about my bloodline.
"Sherry, you can't tell anyone you know what's going on. Don't let any of the other Omegas know. Talon is taking a huge risk by keeping you informed but I don't want to risk anyone else. You got that? This needs to stay a secret."
Are you kidding me? Sherry gets to know what's going on but not me? What the hell!
"I understand. But I must say, Drew is really smart and intuitive. I already think he senses something is up and we won't be able to keep it from him for long."
Kai sighed this time, "I know. I know. The one downside to having an incredible mate like him is that you can't keep anything from him."
"Another thing I wanted to tell you. I think he's—"
Sherry's voice cut off. I was so engrossed in the conversation, I didn't realize that Robin had walked out of the lab and was staring dead at me.
"Robin, you okay?" Kai asked.
She just stared at me.
Crap, I'm done for. Kai is going to be pissed.
"Robin?"
She blinked before saying. "I'm fine, sorry. Just a lot on my mind."
I furrowed my brow in confusion. Without another word, she walked past me and out of the hall. I stared after her.
Why didn't she rat me out?
I snuck out of the hall and ran upstairs to the bedroom breathing heavily. That was so strange. She could have blown up my spot, made Kai angry with me, and sabotage our relationship for her benefit, but she didn't. It freaked me out.
So there was something in my bloodstream that they can't identify? Why don't they find it necessary to inform me of the things that are happening to my own body? Don't I have the right to know?
And I can't believe Sherry knows!
Talon trusts Sherry enough but Kai doesn't trust me?
What bullshit!
I was mentally murdering Kai when there was a knock on the door. I got up to open it and almost slammed it shut when I saw who it was. Robin stood there looking very uncomfortable.
"Can I come in?"
Against my better judgement, I stepped aside and let her into the room. I closed the door behind us so that if I ended up murdering her, the others would take longer getting inside the room to save her.
Robin glanced around the room awkwardly, before turning to face me. I sat down on of the couches and stared right back at her. My glare was unyielding.
"Look, I know you don't like me, and I don't blame you," she began.
"You're damn right I don't," I snorted.
"But I swear to you, I would never do something to hurt any chance of you having children."
"As if."
"I'm serious. While I don't care so much for you, I know that Kai will never leave you even if you couldn't have kids. So I would never do anything to cause problems for him."
I stared at her long and hard. That look in her eye, it was something I was very familiar with. Something I really didn't expect to see.
"You're in love with him," I deadpanned.
She looked up at me startled. A rosy blush coloring her cheeks. "H-how did you—"
"Please. I've been in love with him since I was five years old. I know what it looks like. And I get it, but he's mine. Remember that."
"I know," she sighed. "It doesn't matter anyway. I have Stonem. He may not be Kai but he's good to me and I feel loved and protected."
I gawked at her.
"Stonem? Seriously? You two are together? I didn't know he was capable of emotions."
Robin huffed at me but then stared off outside the big wall sized window. "He's a bit rough around the edges, but he shows me a side of himself that no one sees." She turned back to me. "But that's not the point. The point is, I came here to tell you that the injection we gave you does not affect your womb. Its purpose is to protect you from the Werewolves or Betas. They won't target you as long as that serum is in your system."
"Werewolves? Betas? What are those? And what would they want with me?"
Robin looked uneasy.
"I can't tell you much, and even what I'm about to tell you will get me in serious trouble, but I think Brynn's right. You guys need to know. The humans have been kidnapping Omegas. I can't tell you why but just know that they will do nothing but hunt you down. As for the Betas? I can't tell you that. But I think you already know what they are, you encountered a few in the past. Stay away from them, they are dangerous."
"You're human. Why are you helping us?"
There was a fierce glint in her eyes before she spoke. "I admit, I wasn't particularly innocent when I first came here. My intention was to find an Alpha mate and reproduce but then I saw what they were doing. Not enough humans were breeding with the Wolves so they tried a different tactic. They targeted Omegas, kidnapping them and—" she cut herself off, realizing she was about to say too much. Taking a deep breath, she gathered her thoughts and continued. "I saw the horrible treatment and I knew in my heart that this was wrong. I want to stop it. So I joined the Wolves. But the humans don't know. I'm working undercover."
I stared at her for a long time trying to decipher her sincerity.
"I still don't trust you," I muttered.
"I know."
"Good."
The door opened and Kai came in. When he saw us together his eyes widened in panic. Robin stood, giving me a small nod before passing by Kai. She closed the door behind her as she left.
"What was that about?"
I shrugged.
"Should I be worried?"
I smiled at him.
"I don't know, should you?" I teased, going up to him and wrapping my arms around his neck. He smiled down at me, flashing those adorable dimples of his.
"You're cheeky," he grinned, leaning down to press his lips to mine, arms wrapping around my waist so I was flushed against him.
I loved it when he held me close.
"So about that baby. Want to try again?"
I kissed him deeply.
