The ship shook as it lifted off from its perch at the gate, I can't remember the last time I got out of the lower district, it must have been back before Lucy found me. My rich clients from some of the upper districts would call for me and have everything paid for so they wouldn't have to be seen with me. I didn't mind they got to live out their sick fantasies and I got to buy Lucas new shoes and food for him to eat, not to mention all his extra activities at school. While there were schools outside of the academy district, they still couldn't afford to cover every expense despite being funded by the council.
"Whoa, look at all the buildings" Lucas said running past Jack almost knocking him over, it was cute, Lucas always brought a smile to my face, his innocence is the only thing keeping me going these days, but then again how he interacts with Jack is a cause for concern as if he's protecting me but I don't need protecting, not as much as him.
"Be careful you brat" Jack shouted at Lucas, I moved up behind Jack who looked back at me, irritated as usual but his face was clouded with something else, another emotion that seemed pained "I don't like this at all" he turned away from me to look through the window, which now showed the vast city, we were high up and moving fast but the city was still massive and so it would be about half an hour before we reached the academy district on the other side of the city.
"This will be my first time going to school in 2 years" I tried to start up a conversation as we stood there but Jack looked at me not saying anything for a while but as he opened his mouth Lucy had appeared behind him tapping his shoulder.
"I leave him to you" she gave me a wink and saluted Jack for some reason, I hope she wasn't up to something, but I feel like that would be hoping for a little much from her. She quickly moved over to Lucas who has now gotten locked in an arm wrestle with another kid who wore the same school uniform, at least he's making new friends.
I wanted to know what she was up to but Jack spoke, drawing my attention away before I could think up anything close to what she'd be planning "why did you drop out of school" it was a simple question, anyone would ask it but the question felt heavy, Jack had kissed me that morning and claimed to know everything about me, if that's true why was he asking me now, he must have just been messing with me.
"I thought you read my mind with your fancy spell" I mocked him a little, my face redden as I remembered how soft his lips were as if they never had a struggle in his whole life, just perfect lips "or are you just a stalker who got lucky?"
"I'm not as strong as I used to be" he started, not meeting my eyes as he spoke "before I was strong enough to read the minds of a whole world of people" he looked out the window, his face seemed to green a little "and now I can barely read a mind without a physical touch and a strong emotion linked to the action" he looked at me his eyes sparkled for a moment or where they just glossy like he was going to cry.
"so, you might have acted all cocky before about knowing my past but you only know my easy memories?" I felt stupid there's no way magic was real let alone with someone who's eyes reminded me of a past I'd rather forget "you only know the shit that involved a kiss"
"Though I did see a glimpse of him in your memory" Jack spoke as if in response to my thoughts and not from what I was saying "he is not me, but my mentor" he looked down, but not completely down as if he was still looking at me, his face was still green but there was a flush of light pink over his pale skin.
I wanted to ask him what he knew, how he knew what I thought and I wanted to know if he was really telling the truth or was I just hearing what I wanted to hear because some random guy has taken notice of me, but I didn't I stayed quite the rest of the trip and he just stood there with me.

As we reached the port for the academy district Lucas ran up to me and grabbed my hand pulling me towards one of the view ports to show me something I expect but he didn't want to use his words, he really was like a kid in a candy store on this ship, I don't think he's ever ridden in one before.
Jack must have followed close behind us because once Lucas let go after pulling me across half the ship to what he claimed to be the best view of the approaching academy district, he was right behind me, his face was contorted into a frown, he looked more worried than before and when he caught me looking, he looked away as if trying to hide his expression, but he still seemed to wear it on his sleeve. I wouldn't admit it to anyone else, I couldn't admit it, not after how far I've come just to keep myself together, he looked cute and I wanted to give him a hug, his lips were so soft, and I wanted to see how the rest of him felt but I kept my distance, I needed to keep my distance.
Jack looked out the window I had be standing at, he was amassed at the site, his mouth did that cartoonish jaw drop basically as he moved closer to see the new are of the city, much newer than the one we had come from. The academy district was a wide arrange of buildings surrounded by grass lands, they kept the nature for classes that studied it and the buildings looked sleek as they shone in the early morning sun, unlike the lower district this one had lots of space between each school allowing for the roads to be lined with trees, though the docking port for the ship was the only thing that stuck out as its metallic appearance conflicted with the natural brick buildings that surrounded it "like it" I smirked at him, he snapped back to his usual worry face as he looked at me, maybe it wasn't worry but he was just trying to seem casual and it was a bit funny when I noticed.
Jack looked at me with intent as if he wanted to ask me something but then he glanced over to Lucy who had approached us with big grin plastered on her face "what's so funny female bug" Jack spat out with a displeased look, there he was, that smug look he had yesterday, his face was all over the place as if he never knew how to control it and that his emotions were reacting to everything, he seemd unstable.
"nothing just that you seem to be looking at Sam so intently" she must have been watching Jack this whole time, just like me. Well he is stunning to look at despite his adituted that is "are you interested in my little Sammy" she continued as she slipped her arms around me and brought me in for a hug as if she was shielding me from the way Jack was looking at me.
"what?" he started, his tone was off, "while I do need him to love me, I don't need much else from him" welp there goes any charm left that his looks gave me, he really is a sucky person isn't he, why do I even give him the benefit of the doubt
"oh don-"
I cut lucy off by pushing away from her "Listen Jack I won't be falling in love with you, for one your personality sucks and you keep referring to me as a bug, if that's how you flirt you gotta readjust your standards" I poked my finger into his chest and I could feel my body react to his chest even though it was barly any contact it was strong and he didn't budge at my prodding he was truly strong as he acted, despite his thin frame "even if you do I've had it with your constant string of insults, I don't know why I put up with it until now but I'm done"
I could see that he wanted to say something, buthis confident attitude seemed to shrink as mine grew, and I wanted to continuemy rant, but the speakers came to life as they announced our arrival to theacademy port. I kept my mouth shut and walked away from Jack who still seemedto be stunnd by my outburst and to be honest so was I, I never likedconfrontation, its how I undened up in bad situations but this seemeddifferent, my heart seemed to twine at the thought of me not getting to touchmore of that chest.
