The bell rings, signalling the return to class for the students and teachers. The boys stand up, gather their belongings, and return to class. As he’s walking down the crowded corridor, Ryan gets a sinking feeling of danger, but he has no idea why. As a gang of students approaches from the opposite end of the corridor, he continues walking. In order to avoid conflict, Ryan keeps his head down and avoids eye contact at all times. "Your proper bent you!" shouts Jack O’Grady as he pushes Ryan up against the wall. The gang kept walking. Ryan gets himself back together. He knows that there’s nothing he can do about it because everyone is afraid of Jack so they’ll all cover for him. He keeps walking to class when he feels a tap on his shoulder.
He turns his gaze on Ms. Coates, who appears worried. She hands him his permission slip and inquires, "What exactly happened there? Are you all right? " Ryan accepts the slip with a shrug and says, "I'll be fine, Ms., don't worry about it." Ms. Coates watches Ryan as he walks to class, feeling obliged to investigate the incident. Ryan enters Mr. Wallace's math lesson. Everyone despises Mr. Wallace, especially Ryan, because Mr. Wallace does everything in his power to bring Ryan down at every opportunity. As Ryan enters the classroom, Mr. Wallace is typing on his laptop and barely looks up at Ryan to acknowledge him arriving.
Ryan can't help but zone out when Mr. Wallace is talking about their next important project. He has a throbbing pain in his shoulder from where he hit the wall. The entire scene is replaying in his mind, and the more he thinks about it, the more enraged he feels. He stood up and stormed out of the room. He went straight to his year head Mr. Damon's office, but when he glanced through the glass in the door, there was no one there. He reaches for the doorknob to see if it is unlocked. The door opens, and he walks inside, where he finds a seat, sits down, and feels safe. Suddenly, he can’t control it anymore and the tears start flowing down his cheeks yet again.
