My Beautiful Death

Chapter Two (Part One)

Chapter Two (Part One)

Jul 19, 2022

The hours leading up to Mitchell's meeting with Lunaire and the investor seemed to drag on. All boxes were sorted through, and most ended up being worth more than the girls were expecting. "It's getting close to two," Mitchell said to her sister. "I'm going to grab a drink and head over to the bank. Keep your phone on, I'll be calling you soon with some good news, I hope."

Lilly never took her eyes off her phone, but lifted her hand to give Mitchell a thumbs up. "Uh-huh, got it," she mumbled as she went back to texting.

Mitchell rolled her eyes. Lilly was a typical teenager to her, even though she was almost twenty. Quick with infatuation, always on the phone, and owned too much clothes and make up. Even now, she was like most girls her age on social media, playing the role of perfect Mom in her photos and posts, but away from the screen the grandparents were the real parental figures. There was always more to life in her eyes than outward appearance and a fake internet life, and she wished Lilly saw things that way while she was still young. "Let me know if Adam, Luke, and Mary show up. I guarantee Mom already called them and told them about the Bible," Mitchell said as she grabbed a water bottle from the hidden mini-fridge under the desk.

"You know she did, Dad will probably be here too," Lilly glanced up to see Mitchell's expression before she went back to the phone. "If they're here, I take it you want me to grab the money so you can go?"

"You know me so well, my little Lilith," Mitchell rubbed her sister's head, messing up her hair. Lilly shot her a dirty look before smiling, releasing a hefty sigh.

"You know I hate that, Matchbook," Lilly said as she slapped her sister's rear. "Get going before you're late! I got this covered."

Mitchell walked to the back door, slipping her sister the middle finger. "You mean you've got your phone covered. I did all the sorting already!" She smiled as she slipped out of the room, practically running as she heard something hit the wall by her.

"What ever! See you soon you brat! Don't forget to get some coffee!" Lilly yelled as the door swung shut.

Mitchell rolled her eyes as she unlocked her mom's car and got in. "Not going on any dates," she said softly to herself as she started the engine. She put the car in reverse and backed out of her spot before putting it in drive, slowly pulling around the building to the exit. Mitchell headed south on the main street, making her way to the bank. The roads were unusually empty for a prime time in the day. Schools were getting out, morning shifts were off of work, and lunch breaks were over. Still, no one was driving. Mitchell shrugged, just assuming she beat traffic for once. Within a few minutes she was at the bank. She pulled into an empty parking spot and put her car into park, leaving it running for the air-conditioning and radio. The weather sure is heating up early! Already in the high ninety's, and we aren't even in summer yet! Mitchell nodded her head, agreeing with the radio host as she opened her bottle of water, taking a big swig. She instantly opened the car door and spit it out, almost hitting the car next to hers. "What the hell?" Mitchell yelled as she wiped her mouth on her arm. "Tastes like rusty-ass water!" She examined her water, but the bottle was clear. She looked on the asphalt and with the position of the sun it seemed like it had a red tinge.

"Ah! Ell!"

She heard a familiar voice and looked to the car that pulled in next to hers. "Lunaire," she said with a forced smile. "Sorry for yelling... and spitting on your car. I didn't know water could go bad." She blushed, embarrassed. Way to start a meeting over the most valuable thing we own.

Lunaire raised a brow, perplexed. "How long has it been in your car for?" He looked down to the spot she spit and crouched. "You sure you're okay? Looks like blood."

Mitchell got out of her car, handing him the bottle of water. "I just got this from the fridge at work. Brand new, we just got them earlier this week."

He took the bottle, tipping it upside down and squeezed. "No holes in the bottle. Huh..." It seemed as if he was talking to himself as he looked over the bottle, even going as far as to smell it. "Do you mind?" he asked her, twisting off the lid as he brought it to his lips.

"If it's bad I don't want you to drink it!" Mitchell exclaimed as she tried reaching for the bottle. Lunaire took a small sip and shrugged. "Tastes like water to me. Maybe you've fallen ill?" He lifted her chin, examining her face.

"Either that or I've gone crazy," Mitchell joked, trying to lighten up the situation as she brushed his hand to the side. "Anyways, enough about my water bottle, is your investor here to see the Bible?"

Lunaire walked over to the back door of his car, opening it for his passenger. "Elysia, we are all here now. Shall we?" he asked, holding his arm out.

A slender man in a dark suit slowly emerged from the car, grabbing a hold of Lunaire. He was young, with shoulder length dark hair partially hiding his face. From what Mitchell could see, his eyes were so light blue they were almost white. Severe scarring covered a majority of his face from the cheeks up. "Let's see this Bible," he chuckled as he unfolded a probing cane.

"You always have such a good sense of humor, Ely," Lunaire said as he shut the door behind Elysia. "Ell, this is Elysia. He's my investor. Elysia, this is the young lady from the antique store that was nice enough to set this up for us same day."

Elysia extended his hand in front of him and Mitchell shook it. "It is very nice to meet you Elysia. Let's go inside and get this Bible for you," she said as she looked at Lunaire with a confused face.

Lunaire smiled to her as he pushed lightly on Elysia's shoulders, guiding him in the right direction. "The bank is straight ahead, we will meet you inside, Ely. I just have a few more questions for Ell before we buy."

"If it is what she says it is," he responded with a smile, slowly working his way to the bank doors.

"Yes, sir!" Lunaire called to him. He turned to Mitchell and sighed. "So, he's blind, but he is crazy about Biblical things. I'll be his eyes, but I hate to make a purchase without him. Just because he can't see doesn't mean he can't see."

Mitchell smirked. "You know, that's not the craziest thing I've heard in the past twenty-four hours."

"So, what was?" Lunaire asked, intrigued.

Mitchell extended her arm to the bank and began walking. Lunaire followed close behind her, poking her shoulder with his index finger. "Okay, okay. Some crazy thing happened last night and some even crazier guy told me that I'm not dead in the sense that I'm thinking." She chuckled to herself, remembering how real that dream was.

"Ah, typical Reaper of Death situation," Lunaire mumbled to himself under his breath. "What a bastard."

"Excuse me?" Mitchell turned to Lunaire, stopping in her tracks. "What did you say?"

Lunaire smiled and moved Mitchell forward to the bank doors. "Nothing, now about the Bible."

Mitchell and Lunaire entered the bank, quickly spotting Elysia sitting alone in the waiting area for new accounts. Lunaire helped Elysia over to the counter while Mitchell spoke to a teller about accessing the deposit box. They were quickly taken to a fortified room by the teller, and they waited patiently for the safe to be brought to them. "It's a very quiet day today," Elysia said, breaking the silence.

"Yes, I noticed that on my way here. I don't think I saw a single person until you two arrived," Mitchell replied as she distracted herself with the hem of her shirt. She didn't know how to process the day, between the disappearing comic, the coppery water, and Lunaire's spot on revelation about the mystery man known as Death. All she knew was something weird was going on, and she was stuck in the middle of it.

The bank teller brought over a sealed box with two key holes. He put his key into one, and Mitchell the other. Both unlocked their portion of the box, opening it to reveal an extremely dated, but still in wonderful condition Bible. Lunaire's eyes immediately brightened up, clearly pleased with what he saw. Mitchell thanked the teller as they left the room. "I hope this is what you were wanting it would be," Mitchell said as she handed the Bible gently over to Lunaire.

Lunaire scanned the Bible, carefully turning the pages, and handed it to Elysia. "What do you think, Ely?"

Elysia traced his fingers over the decorative designs of the book, stroking it with such tenderness that you could compare it to a mother holding her child for the first time. He closed his eyes and ran his fingers over the spine and the pages. "It feels like it is in prime condition for it's age. It is more than I had hoped for. This is exactly what I've been trying to feel from a Bible. Please, pay Miss Ell, I would like to take this back to my home for my father."

"Please, call me Ell," Mitchell responded. "I would be more than happy to sell it to you. It is going to be eighty grand. Would you like to do a direct transfer or do you need to stop at your bank-"

"I have the money. Lunaire, if you would," Elysia motioned to Lunaire.

"Of course, Ely," Lunaire said as he excused himself from the room. The door quietly shut behind him, leaving Elysia and Mitchell in silence.

Elysia ran his hands across the sleeves of his suit, smoothing them out and distracting himself from the overwhelming awkward silence. He cleared his throat, causing Mitchell to jump, before speaking, "May I ask how your family acquired this?"

"From what I was told, my step-father got it from a storage auction. He got it appraised and it's been here ever since," Mitchell responded in a calm, soothing voice. "He always swore if the shop did well on it's own he would keep it for the family, but I personally would rather sell it. Too many of us, and not enough that believe in religion for it to be of value to keep." she shrugged and leaned against the wall next to Elysia.

He smiled, reaching his arm out in her direction. She moved closer, extending her arm for him, patting him lightly on the forearm. He lightly grabbed her wrist, turning her arm to leave her palm up to the ceiling. His fingers lightly traced the indentations of the lines in her palm, his eyes closed and he sighed. "You mean you're not the believer of religion," he told her. She huffed, her mouth twisting into a pout. "It's truly okay, Ell. Not everyone has a reason to believe. But, with your lifeline, it may be something to consider," he said as he poked at her palm.

Lunaire opened the door, returning with a large bag. "I've already asked the teller, they would be more than happy to help count this. I would offer, but it is a large amount of money and I feel more comfortable having no part in the counting of it," he said as he handed the bag to Mitchell. "I'm happy to wait in the lobby until it is done before we leave with the Bible. I want this to be as smooth and easy as possible. They'll be bringing in the cash counter now."
