“I have you to thank, Muiranda?” Iola moved in closer. “You made it dawn upon me of what I am truly capable of.”

“You think a naive beginner is any match for me?” Muiranda’s eyes began to glow red. “I who spent half a lifetime mastering the craft of mind control?”

“I know I am, and I believe so.” Iola smiled at her without mirth. “My Gift has not been corrupted as yours has, despite your training. I am pure, and within me is the knowledge and experience of the Starlight legacy.”

“We shall see?” Muiranda’s snarl was followed up a huge wave of dark energy, a wall of murkiness that came crashing down over Iola.

“Steady, Iola.” Nesmir hummed in her head. “Brace yourself for impact, and push back.”

“Yes, my love.” She smiled. “Together, we can.”

The dark energy stung her hard, she had never felt such agony ever before. But Iola held her own, she could feel Nesmir’s will and determination pushing back with hers.

The energy weakened as she fought back, it began to slow down.

Iola reached out and harnessed it, and as she did she could sense Muiranda’s desperation at losing power over her own rage.

Iola lashed back, sending the harnessed energy back at her assailant.

She heard the other woman’s scream of anguish as her own power beat her down.

The gloom all around Iola began to dissipate and waves of vibrant colours came streaking in.
