Selena walked through the open-door way looking for her friends. Making her way past the couples making out, and through drunk wild dancers, she made her way through the house.
While going through the glass French doors that lead into a backyard, she heard a familiar voice call her name. A few seconds later she spotted Nicki.
She was greeted by a bear hug from Nicki, who had been chatting with a friend that was sitting on a guy’s shoulders throwing back a drink she probably shouldn’t have.
While checking out the guy and trying to figure out if she had seen him before, he noticed and introduced himself. “Hey I'm Austin, I’ve heard about you... wanna meet the guys?"
"Oh yeah, you have to meet this Rowan kid. He mixes the best drinks", the drunk girl chimed in added.
"Sure, may as well since I'm here," Selena replied.
Austin led them inside.
After passing through a room full of partiers they managed to make it to the kitchen.
A marble bar-like counter covered in a mass of alcohol different sizes colors and types all seemingly tossed on the makeshift bar was surrounded by people.
Yet on the other side, one teen guy stood alone making colorful concoctions, using tricks that caught everyone’s attention in the room.
Austin called him over and the girl who was a little past tipsy introduced him as, "Rowan the best drink maker alive", Selena thought it was kind of funny because she said it as if he was some kind of a circus act.
Selena nodded at him not really interested. She really did not want to be there anymore, parties were not her thing, but she stayed to be there and hang out with her friends. Selena stood around the girls as they chatted with the two guys seemingly endlessly.
Austin seemed to see that she was not into what was going on, but he pulled out his phone a second later so she assumed she had been wrong.
He then said quietly, " party not your thing?"
She shook my head no.
"There’s a small pool game in the library, a bunch of chairs and it’s not full of drunks. Plus, I'll make sure your friends don't get in too much trouble."
This was a difficult choice, not should she stay or should she go, but can she trust him with her friends?
Her decision did not matter much when Nicki overheard and said, "Oh Sel! Let’s go!"
Nicki was not drunk, she wanted Selena to have a good time and was not going to take no for an answer.
There was no point in questioning his intentions, as she was already being dragged down the hallway.
Nicki stopped for a second to check her hands to see which way was left and right. She opened the door to our left. When they stepped inside it was a dark library except for a single bright blub hanging above a red felted table.
The walls were almost imperceptible in the room. The window and skylight let enough light in that the spines of some of the books appeared to almost float mid-air. Spread around were small chaises that looked comfortable. It took Selena a second before she realized people were standing around the table staring at us.
Not only is it awkward to be stared at by strangers, but it’s even more so when your socialite friend ditches you standing in the doorway to go introduce herself.
Normally Selena would go with Nicki and do the customary introductions and greetings. While Nicki loves to talk to new people at parties, Selena prefers to go to spend time with her friends.
Selena walked over to a seat on the other side close to the doorway and then sat on the plush chair. She took a look at the pool table; the game had not started yet. The three boys were people she hadn’t met before, but the two girls she knew. One of the girls was Casey, who Selena had beaten in a race earlier in the day. The other girl was someone she knew from school.
While Selena did not know what she did that made Casey hate her so much, she did know that Casey wouldn’t be able to keep from insulting her for very long. As Casey noticed Selena had sat down; " What Selena, becoming a stalker now? Just go place to place watching people live their lives because you don't have own of your own?”, she taunted from across the room.
Nicki shot back, “you are just bitter that Sel beats you every time.”
Casey’s face soured, " I can beat her, I was just lazy today."
By now all eyes were on us and our petty bantering.
It continued until one of the guys asked, " your name is salt in French? That’s shitty."
Nicki laughed, " No, She's Selena. I call her Sel, as a nickname of sorts. I think she needs to recharge her introvert battery, so I will be the one playing with you all."
Casey of course had nothing of the sort in her mind though, " I bet the amazing Selena can't beat me in a game of pool."
Selena ignored her and stayed seated.
Surprisingly the girl Selena knew from school spoke up, "Selena, will you please come play pool so it’s not as awkward?"
Sighing Selena walked over to the table. She didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere for everyone else. Selena said, "Know what, I don't want to play, so if Nicki and I win, we will head out, but if we lose, we will stay and play some more."
