Eli’s POV
While walking to class I saw Milo for the third time that day. Godamnit. I thought, turning on my heels to take the long way to class in order to avoid him, regardless of the fact that I would probably end up late because of it.
Ever since the night we kissed and the awkward conversation the morning after, I had been avoiding Milo. I finally decided I needed to move on from him since it was a one-sided love anyway. And I put all my hope in not seeing him being the solution to my problems. However, considering we went to the same university and, even worse, lived in the same apartment, it was no easy feat. Not only that, but his girlfriend, a constant reminder of him and the fact that I would never be with him, was trying her damn best to befriend me.
“Guess who!” A voice that was unmistakably Sara’s said from behind me as my vision was blocked by hands.
“Sara,” I said with all the excitement I could muster, bringing my hands up to hers to pull them away from my eyes.
She jumped out in front of me with the widest, dumbest grin on her face, “You guessed right!” She almost shouted.
“Keep it down Sare, you’re gonna make people stare,” I said, looking around even though nobody seemed to care what we were doing.
“Alright alright,” She said, waving her hands but thankfully lowering her voice too. She began walking towards where Milo was- the most direct route to the class we shared. When I didn’t follow she stopped and asked with a small pout, “Aren’t you coming?”
“Uhh…” I said, racking my brain for any excuse to get away.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think fast enough as Sare began to wave Milo down and he began walking over once he’d noticed her. Shit. “Hey Sare,” He said, giving her a quick, one-armed hug with a smile. “Hey El,” He said, nodding at me, smile dropping for a moment.
“Hey,” I said, nodding back.
The silence after we exchanged greetings was awkward but, of course with Sara, not long. “So, our classes are both in the same direction aren’t they? Let’s walk together!” Sara said, eyes beaming up at Milo.
“Sure baby,” He said, and they brushed their noses together.
I made a disgusted face at their adorable antics. Well Milo being adorable and feeling sick knowing that would never be us. “Ya, let’s go,” I said, quickly walking past them to escape their obnoxious flirting.
I could hear Sara jogging to catch up to me and dragging Milo- who only had to take slightly longer strides- to walk next to me. “So how have you been El?” She asked, making small talk as we reached Milo’s class and said goodbye.
I wasn’t sure if it was because I waved too long or the fact that I had been staring at Milo the entire time we had walked, albeit against my own will, but Sare stopped to ask, “Is everything ok between you and Milo?”
“Ya, why do you ask?” I replied quickly.
Technically everything was fine between us, it was me who wasn’t fine. Obsessing over him like some kind of fangirl every minute of the day while simultaneously doing my best to get over him.
“Hmm I don’t know… you guys are just a lot more… awkward around each other. Usually you’re talking a bunch and laughing and stuff. But there seems to be this sudden… distance between you.”
“Really? I haven’t noticed.” Now that was a blatant lie.
But we had finally reached our shared class and there was, thankfully, no more time to talk about my relationship with Milo. She sighed, “Well, talk to you later I guess.”
“Ya,”
