When he was tugged out of view, Selena’s curiosity got the best of her and she went further down the hall from the front ending up in a kitchen. She knew it is nosy to open shut doors in strangers’ houses. She was still a little on edge and felt like if she didn't check and there was a dead person in a closet Selena would regret not checking when she had the chance.
The door Selena chose held a room that was an office. It had a desk and what she assumed were family pictures, it appeared Rowan had four older sisters. The pictures were a little off, all but one of the girls were not looking at the camera.
She heard thuds and closed the door mostly. On my way back to the living room Rowan cut her off coming off the stairs.
“Find any skeletons in the closet?", he joked.
“Nah, I only made it to the kitchen."
“I don't use it that much, just the microwave and fridge."
“Yeah same"
“So do you want to sit down or... Watch tv?"
“I don't really mind"
He walked back to the living room and claimed his chair as Selena returned to the sofa curling her legs onto the couch.
She tried to start a conversation, "So how long have you lived here?"
"Three years, I don't stay here much."
"Don't you go to class?"
"Sure, just not every day."
"Who do you stay with?", Selena worried that she may be being too pushy.
"Mostly my brother up north."
"Nice, I don't travel much that must be awesome."
"If your 'Just traveling' but you ' hardly travel’, what are you really doing here?"
Selena bit the inside of her lip before answering, "It’s summer, I want to have fun. So, I'm finally getting around to seeing other places. I'm from a small town after all."
He did not look like he believed her and yet he moved on, "Braslit isn't too bad, Eris is tiny, with a bunch of people in the middle of it."
"Braslit is too small to do most things."
"Not much you can do anywhere."
"Well, what do you do here?", Selena fidgeted trying to get more comfortable.
Rowan's look implied,' Well isn't that obvious?"
"You can't party every second of every day," she pointed out scoffing.
"Nothing too special or different from anyone else. we hang, play video games," he smirked, “go to school once and a while."
In the brief silence, the ticking of the clock got my attention. Selena tilted her head to check the time and sprang into action upon reading 11:42 pm.
"Shit, I should go. Shit didn't realize how late it was.”
"Are you in town tomorrow?"
It was her turn to do the eyebrow raise, “Why, offering something?", jokingly Selena continued," you didn't seem like that kind of guy."
Selena’s teasing made him smile, "Ah, but do you really know anything about me at all?", he shot back.
"Not enough to know what you meant."
"If you are we should hang out."
"Oh, uh sure," she started to get up.
"Ok"
"Where?”, she barely knew this town.
"Do you like pizza?"
"Yeah, I guess"
"Then I'll meet you. Where have you been in town? Where are you staying?"
"Nowhere, in particular, I just took a walk and ended up at that party."
"The stop sign at the end of the street then. It is down past where the party was, at how about 12:30?"
"Sounds alright", Selena said as she started back toward the door.
Rowan followed her lead and turned off the lights as he strode out of the kitchen.
She kept going to the door, once Selena got to her shoes, she quickly put them on and got ready for the walk back.
Patting her pockets, she made sure she had her keys before reaching for the handle. Rowan’s hand beat hers to it, with his other hand he held out a piece of paper.
Selena just stared.
"My number", he stated very slowly and with heavy condescension.
She snatched it away, "See you tomorrow ", and took another step to the door.
"Good night, Selena, do you want me to walk you back to where ever?"
"Nah I'll be fine on my own."
"Oh, I'm sure you can get out of any situation yourself.", he had a smile lurking.
Selena stepped out onto the porch thinking of saying ' You don't know the half of it, but keeping silent.
As he shut the door slightly, Selena said, “Bye Rowan, thanks for saving me from the wild group of teenagers."
Quietly with only a sliver of his face showing whispered, “Good night little fox," then shut the door completely.
She turned down the walkway wondering if she heard him clearly. A spring chilled wind hit her and she soon forgot. Becoming focused only on getting inside and resting.
