On one sunny afternoon, a store sign was turned in the window of a small shop which signaled that a new day was beginning. It was a routine that the workers of a small trinket store had gotten used to. Customers went into the small building that sat smack dab in the middle of a busy area and purchased items until night fell, another signal that always told the workers it was time to close up. On this particular night, a man named Tommy stood at the cash register while solemnly staring out of the window with droopy tired eyes. You see, Tommy is someone who doesn't have much excitement in life. His nerdiness and lack of athletic ability left him in a rut and depressed, so he stays at this store. Despite his disposition, Tommy enjoys working in this trinket shop and looks forward to being around his coworkers, Danielle and Mitch. Danielle being one of the people who picks up new items at garage sales and Mitch being the more upbeat worker. Then there's the owner Bill. Bill is a stern old man who cherishes this store, since it was a store his family owned for generations and generations. He's stern but has a nice heart. He often makes new trinkets in the workshop in the back of the store.
So on this particular night, Tommy began closing up the store like usual and putting stuff away. Then Bill walked into the store after being gone for most of the day. It was something he didn't usually do so when he saw the door open with Bill carrying a large box, he was intrigued but confused. "What is the box for Bill?" Tommy asked.
There was a bit of silence while Bill continued walking to the counter."I just need to put this box right here, and for you to watch it." He hastily planted the giant cardboard box on the table near Tommy. "What's inside of it?"
"I don't know. I just need you to watch it until I come back, and DON'T open it."
"Why not?" Tommy asked with a head tilt. He started tapping the top of the box which made Bill sneer at him.
"Just don't open it okay. I have to go meet someone. Do you promise not to open it?"
Bill said, leering at him.
"Yeah, yeah, I promise. I don't know why but I promise."
"Okay good, I have to go now but I'll be back later." Before Tommy could fully register what was happening he had already left out of the store, the bell on the door letting out a little jingle.
Tommy began wondering what could be so important in a box that he couldn't even open it at least ONCE. His curiosity was peaked and his mind was left to wander since there weren't any customers to bother him. He knew from the movies that when someone tells you not to do something DON'T DO IT. Still it wasn't the movies and it couldn't be that bad. Suddenly, he heard his coworker Mitch come back from reorganizing the items in the back.
"What is this?" He looked at the box curiously, just like Tommy was doing.
"I don't know. The boss told me not to open it and just sat it down here haha."
"That's weird. Maybe it's our new million dollar paychecks?" Mitch joked, rubbing his fingers together.
"Maybe? Who knows." Tommy answered with a smile.
Pretty soon Mitch went into the workshop to tinker with things, but Tommy wanted to stay and see Bill come back so that maybe he could open the box with him. He found himself staring at the cardboard beside him for thirty more minutes wondering what was in there. What was in there. What was in. What was. What. Tommy slowly opened the box. He knew he was betraying what Bill said, but it couldn't be anything too bad. When he pulled back the flaps, after all of this anticipation and thinking, he saw….nothing? His eyebrows curled as he frowned looking into the empty cardboard box. He did feel something though…and it was a heavy air weighing on top of his chest, surrounding his body. It was as if he opened a front door and air came in.
Then, the air rushed to the shelves, knocking everything down with a sharp wind and whipping sound, causing every little trinket to fall down with a stinging crack. It continued to whip every which way, in the air, to the wall, to the floor, until it finally crashed through the front door, causing glass shards to fall everywhere. All Tommy could do was stare in shock as he witnessed what he never thought he would see. A ghost. With perfect timing, Bill frantically opened the shattered glass door and ran in. "What the hell happened?!" He said running towards Tommy. Mitch came out of the workshop with confusion written all over his face.
"There, there was, something came out of the box."
"YOU OPENED THE BOX?! I told you not to!" Bill angrily ran his hands over his graying hair.
"What happened?" Mitch asked but throughout the chaos, he was ignored.
"I'm sorry, I - I don't even know what that was!" Tommy's explanations clearly were not working on a frantic Bill.
You see Bill had gotten a mysterious box shoved in his hands from a long time friend, who appeared to be in a nervous state. "Why are you giving me this?" "Just take it! I don't want to see it again!"
So he brought it back to the store and went to see his friend, hoping he would get some kind of answer out of em. He knew it might be dangerous which is why he told him NOT TO OPEN IT. It took some time but eventually his friend opened up and told him what was in the box….
"You just let out something terrible! Something just - not good at all!"
"What was it?!"
"You let out the Devil Tommy!"
"What…" Tommy thought about the fact that some poor souls have to deal with a mistake that he made, and the mischief it's going to cause.
"You let it out and now someone has to catch it again!"
