“Yeah, so after all those events happened, that’s where we are right now,” I summarized, informing Hwan of what my search with Eunkyung has been over the last few months.
Hwan, Eunkyung, and I were gathered around a coffee shop near our hotel. We’ve already moved all of our stuff to the apartment that we rented for a month. It took us until 16:01 to finish moving everything.
“Well, that’s quite a story,” Hwan remarked.
“Tomorrow, I think we should investigate the crime scene,” Eunkyung noted.
“Well, my brother, An Won-Shik is coming to Busan tomorrow as well to investigate the scene. He’s a leading investigator of the BHK case, and if we consult him, I’m sure we could find some other evidence,” Hwan suggested.
“Oh right, I forgot,” I muttered, “Your brother was a leading investigator. He should probably have some other information… though I’m not sure whether or not he would be willing to share.”
“Don’t worry, I think as long as it’s allowed by the law, he definitely shares some information with me.”
I nodded.
“So… what should our next steps be? Or like, what should we do now while we wait for tomorrow?” I asked.
“Well, I guess another day of relaxing can’t hurt guys?” Hwan asked.
“I am pretty eager to get some information about BHK, but you guys can relax if you want. I’m just going to be heading to an internet cafe to do some research,” Eunkyung answered.
Hwan nodded.
“Just be back by 23:00 at the latest.”
“Well, later guys. I’ll be at a bookstore to buy some books if you guys need me. Calling or messaging me also works.”
“Do you like reading books?” I asked.
“Of course! When I was in school, I loved reading books. It was an excellent way to kill the time. Anyways, I’m going to be off now. Later!”
“Later,” I said, waving.
She turned around and threw her empty coffee cup away before turning around and leaving.
“What about you, Youngjae?” Hwan asked, glancing at me.
“Well…”
I struggled to think of something to do.
“Clear your mind,” Hwan suggested. “Maybe take a walk.”
“Um… alright. I could use that. What are you going to do?” I asked him.
He shrugged. “I have no idea. I’ll probably just be doing nothing. Or if I get bored, I might go back to the apartment and do some things.”
I nodded. “Alright, I’ll be back before 23:00. I’ll see you then!”
I waved to him and left the coffee shop.
After walking for 30 minutes, I stopped near a railing that allows me to see Haeundae Beach. As I took a glance around me, I observed the mingle of red leaves on nearby trees and the wonderful chilly breeze. The ocean waves rolled back and forth. It wasn’t till now that I noticed, but the warm wind of the summer had been replaced by the chilly air of fall. It's been months since I last checked the date. How many days have passed since my hospitalization? I could barely recall the past as if the hospitalization was yesterday.
Popping my phone out and checking the date, the calendar on my phone read, “August 29th, 2018”. August is almost over, I suppose. Time flies so fast when you’re not observing it.
As I was about to put my phone back into my pocket, it vibrated. I looked at the screen and found Eunkyung calling me.
“Hello?” I asked as I answered the call.
“Hi, what are you doing right now?” her voice answered.
“Uh, nothing. Just taking a walk right now. What bout you?”
“I’m just on my computer, checking for news. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
I felt the corners of my mouth twitching upwards and let out a silent laugh.
“Well, I’m glad you called,” I replied, still smiling, before glancing at the beach.
“Anyways, I hope I didn’t bother your thoughts or anything. I’ll see you later when you get home.”
“Alright, see you later. Bye,” I said before the call ended.
I watched the sun as it slowly fell down to the ground. Sometimes, I wonder. The sun doesn’t move. Yet it seems, every morning, it rises and every night, it falls. So in the end, it is only our perception of the sun that’s changed.
“This view is really beautiful, isn’t it?” a voice called behind me.
I turned around and noticed Hwan approaching me.
“Yeah, it’s amazing. Completely different scenarios than Seoul.”
Hwan nodded, before leaning onto the railing beside me.
“It was only right now I realized that we can see the beautiful ocean since we’re in Busan. That’s why I headed out. Coincidence I found you here too,” Hwan remarked.
I shrugged.
“I guess everyone wants to see this view.”
We watched the sunset together.
“Youngjae, do you think the sun revolves around us or we revolve around the sun?” Hwan asked, breaking the silence.
I glanced at him, wondering why he asked such a question. The question was kind of similar to whether the world is flat or not.
“Well, I believe we revolve around the sun. Science has proven so,” I answered.
“If the sun orbited around us, would we be able to notice a difference?”
I looked back at the sun. It did seem to be slightly falling.
“We would probably never have a sturdy answer without the invention of the telescope.”
“The sun reminds me of time. When I watch the sun fall, I can’t help but wonder, why does Earth keep orbiting the sun? Why doesn’t it just freeze in its orbit? Then, time would be frozen. But that doesn’t make much sense…” Hwan said.
“Well, the concept of time itself doesn’t really make much sense, does it? If time can only move in one direction, it would make it another dimension, similar to the 3 dimensions. But… is time above us? Below us? To the right of us? It’s a dimension that we as humans can feel, but can’t define exactly. Can’t control it. Can’t touch it. So if there were another species, a species that could control the time dimension, how would they live?”
“Well, I believe they would live exactly like humans. It’s because even though they can change the flow of time, they wouldn’t.”
“Interesting, because most people would say they wish they could go pack in time and fix their mistakes.”
“Suppose they did go back in time and fix their mistake. Then really, the rest of their life was superficial right? That time travel they did will always haunt them and remind them that they time traveled in order to obtain the life they have. So in reality, if one were to head back in time and change something, then for the rest of their life, they’ll feel as if their life was imaginary. Time is only precious because it can’t be reversed.”
I nodded my head. “I agree with you. I don’t think that fixing mistakes will really make their life for the better.”
Hwan tapped the railing for a bit, before glancing at me.
“If during the hunt for BHK, I was suddenly killed, would you reverse time back to save me if you had the ability to?”
I shivered at the mention of Hwan’s death.
“I-I don’t really know,” I mumbled, not wanting to think about it.
He laughed at patted me on the back.
“Don’t worry, I’ll never let you make that choice. I definitely won’t be dying at the hands of BHK.”
I glanced at him and noticed his prideful smirk. Although not wanting to forget the moment he mention his possible death, I couldn’t help but match his smile.
“Yeah, there’s no way someone like you could die to him,” I retorted, playfully hitting his arm.
“Let’s head back now, Eunkyung is probably waiting for us,” he suggested.
I nodded and headed to the library to pick Eunkyung up.
