"Kai, where have you been?!" Lowell, Kai's manager asked. "We were so worried about you! Wait, what are you wearing?"
"Oh, this? It's nothing. Just something I borrowed," Kai replied, thinking of how he and Ren stopped at her neighbour's last night, to ask if the gangsters living next to her had some clothes they could spare. Looking again at the cozy, oversized and very bright pink matching sweater and jogging pants that the gangsters lent him so he could change out of his rain-soaked clothes, Kai had to say that he did not expect them to have such a whimsical fashion sense.
Several meetings and dance practices later, it was already late in the evening by the time Kai headed out again to Ren's, hoping to catch her and give her front row tickets and backstage passes to his group's upcoming concert.
I bet she'll be surprised with these. It will be the perfect thank-you gift for last night.
As Kai stood in front of Ren's door, he could see the gangsters looking out from their apartments. He nodded respectfully to them and rang Ren's doorbell.
"Hey, Ren!" He said, trying not to show the excitement in his voice as he saw Ren in front of him.
"What are you doing here?" Ren asked bluntly.
"I just wanted to thank you for last night, so I-"
"Thank me? For last night? How about turning back time and not almost getting into an accident so you can give me my job back? Things were going perfectly fine, but last night totally messed up my routine and I missed out on the most important presentation of my life, so thanks a lot."
"I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" Kai, started to apologize, not really sure of what was going on and why Ren was so mad at him.
"Just please leave me alone. I never want to see you again," Ren told Kai angrily as she closed the door behind her.
Too stunned to move, Kai was still standing in front of Ren's door after a few minutes when he heard someone calling to him.
"Hey! You there!"
Kai turned around. All of the gangsters have gathered in front of the apartment next to Ren's. One of them started walking closer to him.
What should I do? There are too many of them. Kai thought, trying to weigh his options. I just have to fight as much as I can. Kai stood his ground, preparing to make the first move.
The man, towering over Kai with a menacing look on his face, kept moving towards him. He was only a few inches away when he asked,
"Are you Kai from the Korean group X?"
Kai stared at him in confusion and saw the other gangsters leaning in and waiting to hear his answer.
"Y-yes," Kai replied.
Cheers exploded. The gangsters broke into smiles and high-fived each other. The one who asked the question then told him that they knew who he was and that they were his biggest fans.
"Uhm, okay", Kai uttered, not really sure of what to say.
"Look, you should really not go near Ren right now. She was fired for not making it to this big presentation at work and her company lost a huge investment because of that."
"What? But they can't do that! She saved my life! She probably just overslept from looking after me last night."
"Well, big corporations, kid. What can we say?"
Kai stayed silent for a moment. He felt angry and sad for Ren at the same time but was still unsure of what he could do.
"By the way, are those VIP tickets ?" One of the gangsters asked, eagerly eyeing what was in his hand.
"Oh, yes. I wanted to thank Ren and give these to her, but.."
"We'll take them!" The gangsters answered in unison.
"We'll take them, so you know, they won't go to waste," the one he had been speaking mostly to, who was apparently the leader of the group, said.
"Oh, okay. Sure, you can take them", Kai said, handing over the tickets and the garments Ren borrowed for him. "And of course, the clothes that I got from you guys. Thanks for these. They were very.. nice and comfortable."
"Well then, you can keep them! There's more where that came from," the man said, handing over the clothes back to Kai with a big smile on his face.
"And don't worry about Ren. She'll come around. Just give her a bit of time and space", the leader assured him.
"Okay, thanks", Kai said, again politely nodding to them. As he got into the car that Lowell insisted he be driven around in, he wondered when was the next time he would be able to see Ren.
