"Uh... yes?"
Taken aback, I replied to Yuki with a shocked face.
Didn't he answer his assignment?
I looked around the classroom and saw some of my classmates looking at us.
Truly, seeing us talking is a new sight.
Mga marites.
They will just gossip about us.
Whatever.
Yuki leaned a little, making me lean back on my seat.
For weeks, we're not talking, and suddenly he'll approach me like this, asking for an assignment?
He's smart, right? What happened?
"Can I copy your assignment just this once?"
"Please?"
Yuki said it in a low tone, making it seem like almost a whisper.
I frowned.
"Are you serious?"
I looked at his eyes to see if he's serious about it or he's just pranking me, but all I see is him looking hopeful with a glimpse of desperation.
What must've happened for him to be like this?
I scanned his face to see if I could get more clues.
I noticed that his right cheek was kind of swollen. You won't notice it from afar, but you'll see it if you look closely. Did he cover it with some make-up? Some part of his cheek is still kind of red. He's bad at covering things.
Did he fight with someone?
Is he being rebellious now?
I have a lot of questions in my mind.
I opened my mouth to say something but closed it to refrain from talking.
I want to ask him what happened, but then at the same time, I know I'm not in the right place to ask him things, especially if it's something personal.
I won't pry into other people's businesses.
I looked at the side so I could break our gazes.
I rummaged through my things, took my binder out and gave it to Yuki.
It's already almost time for our next class. He better write fast.
"Here. Just... Just copy it fast. "
"Thanks, I owe you one. " I didn't look at him when he took my binder from my hand.
I glared at my classmates when I saw that some of them were still looking.
They're shameless! They didn't even hide the fact that they were curious and gawking!
This is nuts.
We didn't even do anything. Isn't it just normal for classmates to ask things, especially about assignments? That's a typical thing in classrooms, right?
My precious nap. Don't worry, we'll sleep early tonight.
I should smack Yuki later. He interrupted my nap, and he even copied my assignment.
I looked out the window and saw busy students walking. These dreamers.
Most of the people out there are determined to attend school so they can graduate, get a diploma, and think that by getting good grades, even with Latin Honors, they'll secure a good job and eventually succeed. But for some, they just attended university to graduate, get a diploma to find a decent job or some were forced to fulfill the wishes of their parents.
Either way, our system is still fucked up.
Is graduating the only way to success? No right? There are many successful people around the globe that didn't graduate from college. They simply become more aware of how things work and they do what they love at their own pace, making them succeed in the process.
Because in reality, when you graduate, if you have Latin Honors, a good grade, you'll have an advantage in finding a job, but that doesn't mean you'll succeed.
Either way, Latin Honors or not, employees will look for people that are hardworking, adaptive, and most especially, they'll look for people who can be slaves to their work and make the rich richer.
But that's not the end of it. There are worse situations in finding a job, which is something I can't understand. because once you graduate, you'll search for a job. The qualifications say that they accept fresh graduates, but then suddenly, they want someone with experience?! Some will want a person with one or two years of experience.
What are they even babbling about?
That's a hilarious qualification.
I mean, people search for a job to gain experience, but they don't hire people without experience. So how can someone gain experience if they don't get a job?
It's crazy, right?
Arrrgh. My head hurts.
I was busy looking at the sky when someone from behind tapped my back.
I turned around to check who it was and it was one of my classmates.
"Here. Yuki said to pass this on to you."
She handed me my binder, so I smiled a little to thank her and took it.
I looked at the far end of the seat and saw Yuki looking at me.
"Thank you," he said.
I shrugged as a response.
Soon after, my professor came in, so I properly sat and looked in front of me.
During our class, our professor called some students and made them answer our assignment in front of us. Luckily, I wasn't called, but Yuki was.
I thought he wouldn't be able to explain the process of how the problem was solved, but he did it effortlessly. I almost forgot that he's brainy. But why did he copy my assignment when he could discuss how to solve the problem without a sweat in the first place?
He's rather... unpredictable.
After that, we proceeded to a new topic. I was writing down notes, and when I turned to a new page, I saw a sticky note.
Let me buy you a meal later. A compensation for the math answer. 🙂
— Yuki
I put my ball pen down and looked behind, hoping he was looking, but I saw that he was too immersed in listening to our professor. He's slightly frowning.
He looks angry, though he's not.
Meal... Does he mean we'll eat lunch together? What meal is he talking about?
Because of that, I couldn't concentrate for the whole lecture. Not that I'm affected by that note or anything. I was just curious.
But your heart was so loud!
Oh, stop my subconscious. It's not!
The bell rang, signaling that it was now time for lunch.
I looked at my notes to see that I only wrote half of the lecture.
The rest?
It's just doodles.
I put my things back in my bag. I am still sitting on my chair. Should I stand up and leave the classroom now?
I checked behind to see if Yuki was still there and he was.
He is at the far end of our classroom, beside the window. I think he's talking to someone on the phone.
I watched him talk and it seemed like he was arguing with the person he was talking to. He's now frowning and looking angry and stressed.
Since I think he's whispering while talking, no one can hear what they're talking about.
The call ended, and he really looked frustrated and tired.
I watched him get his bag and storm out of the classroom.
Where is he going?
I looked around the room and I was the only one left inside.
I sighed.
The meal can wait.
I got my things and went outside.
I messaged Dahlia to ask her if she'd like to join me for lunch.
Yep, babe. Wait for me. I'll just get my things.
Okay!
Search for a seat!
When I reached the canteen, there were already a lot of students. Luckily, I was able to get us a table because mostly, during this time, you'll be fighting for a table so you can eat and finish on time! The canteen looks like there's a brawl going on because of the students' trying to find a seat!
1 pm classes are a pain in the ass. You'll try to eat so fast, go to your next class while walking under the scorching sun, and sometimes you'll get indigestion because of how you eat.
That is also the reason why some students choose not to eat during lunch, or they'll just bring a lunchbox or takeout and eat it inside the classroom.
I saw my best friend walking and searching for me, so I texted her where I was.
She eventually searched in my direction, so I raised my hand. Her face lit up when she saw me.
"Kaia babe! I hate college!" She looks stressed.
"What happened?"
"I flunked my quiz! My prof gave us a surprise quiz and... and I don't remember what she taught us!"
I chuckled because of that.
"Oh gosh. You're doomed. "
"I know right!" She put her two hands on her face, acting like it was the end of the world.
This dramatic girl.
"C'mon, let's buy lunch now. My treat to cheer you up a little. "
I stood up and pulled my friend up. She'll get over this in no time. She has always been like this ever since. One second, she looks like she's about to cry because of failing a quiz or exam; then the next second, you'll see her acting like she doesn't care at all and she'll say, "Grade is just a number."
I bought only a salad and lemonade, while Dahlia bought a lot. She said it's stress eating and I'm the one who's going to pay anyway, so it's fine.
"Kaia, you're not going to eat?"
She looked at my salad that was barely touched.
"I'm not in the mood to eat." I sipped my lemonade and shrugged.
"You're always not eating. You'll lose weight!"
I don't know why I'm not in the mood to eat either. I mean, we all go through that, right?
"Did something happen?" Dahlia asked, looking a little bit worried.
"No. Uh na, nothing happened! I answered right away. I don't want to worry her.
"Kaia... You know you can always come and talk to me whenever things are hard, right? " She held my hands tightly and I saw her touch my right wrist, where my wave tattoo is.
I gave her a reassuring smile so she wouldn't be concerned.
"Dahlia, nothing really happened. Promise. "
I should stop being upset with something.
Why am I even sad in the first place?
Arrrgh.
"You sure?"
"Yup!"
The day went by fast, and now it's already 11 p.m.
I just finished showering and I'm drying my hair now.
Finally, weekend.
What should I do this weekend?
I was drying my hair, but I stopped when I heard something on my window.
Are kids playing again? But it's already late! How dare these kids play and throw something in my window at this hour!
I went to my window and opened it so I could shout at the kids, but someone was there instead.
In front of our house is none other than Yuki, who's standing there, his one hand inside the pocket of his sweatpants while looking up to see me.
His hair is also down!
How did he know my home?
"What are you doing here?" I asked but didn't let him answer because I hurriedly went downstairs to go outside.
When I opened the gate, I saw him leaning against his pick up, waiting for me.
"How did you know my address? You freak!" I slightly screamed because I didn't want to cause some ruckus here.
I watched Yuki scratch his forehead and slightly shrug.
"I asked your friend?"
Wait, what?
When did he do that?! And why didn't my friend tell me?
What a traitor.
I rolled my eyes because of that.
"So... what exactly are you doing here in front of my house at this hour?" I crossed my arms while waiting for his answer.
"Do you want ice cream and barbecue?" Yuki slightly smiled.
"I promised I would treat you to a meal earlier." he added.
Oh....
The meal he was talking about.
I searched for the food he was mentioning, and when he noticed that I was looking for it, he motioned that it was inside his car.
"It's inside my car. Uh, do you want to eat them somewhere? We can go on a road trip." Yuki suggested.
Is this an unplanned trip then?
A/N:
It's been a while since I updated! It's good to be back. A lot has happened to me in the past week! I couldn't update because of personal, health, and other reasons. And guess what? There was even a power interruption for more than 12 hours today because of the typhoon! But here's the new chapter. It's much longer, haha.
