Plot of Fate

Chapter 9: The Ascension Tower

Chapter 9: The Ascension Tower

Aug 23, 2022

Nemesis set about reading the terms of the pact, although there would be upsides to it he could see that it was a rip-off, and that no person with any intellect would understand that the only one to gain would be Thanatos.

"I'm sorry but I have no interest in becoming your Pupil."

The light in Thanatos' eyes disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

"Are you sure about your choice?"

"Yes."

Although he was sure of his choice his hands were shaking, for fear of Thanatos' reaction, but his reaction was very different from his expectations.

"If you don't want to accept I understand, you still need to know how weak you are right now, if you want to be my pupil in the future my proposal will always be valid."

Turning he turned back to Dee, who was still mute.

"Time to leave, I don't feel like wasting any more time in this hidden hole."

Dee did not even try to object as a portal was created beneath him.

"See you soon Nemesis."

Smiling and adjusting his hat above his head he activated the portal, which made both him and Dee disappear.

Silence once again reigned in the room. Kelley, who had grown sad at not being able to help his friend, gathered his courage and went to treat Dee's two guards, who were still unconscious.

After Dee's guards had recovered Kelley and Nemesis told him what had happened while they were unconscious, and in return asked him why they were hiding.

"After Dee decided to leave to try and save you a lot of things happened.... First Thanatos had managed to get out of the tower, although I don't know how he did it, and then he went on to try to get Dee back to the tower."

"Dee obviously tried hard to escape from him, also creating many enemies, and when word spread many assassins came to claim Dee's head. After killing and interrogating several of them, we realised that the commissioners were people who were jealous of Thanatos's special attentions towards Dee, or others simply wanted to kill Thanatos's pupil, hoping to drive him mad."

"As the years passed, however, the situation became more and more unmanageable.... Eventually we had to hide inside this secret bunker, hoping to be able to hide until we regained our strength and hoping that as time passed at least the killers would diminish, but you two came along and ruined everything. Now Dee has been taken away by Thanatos, and they are probably already inside the tower..."

As they listened to the two guards Kelley realised the mess he had made, while Nemesis knew that if they did nothing Dee would die, or so his system had told him.

"Why hadn't you said anything to Eadmond? Surely he could have helped you."

"Of course Dee didn't want to, even though he knew he would be helped by his friend, he would never want to put him in danger too."

"Typical Dee...."

"Whatever the case... We've also wasted too much time here. We need to go help Dee."

Exchanging a final goodbye with Kelley, the two guards exited the small corridor.

"Don't you think we should go too?"

"Surely we'd just be a burden to them two Nemesis..."

"Are you saying that because you mean it or because you don't want to go back to the Tower?"

"...."

Kelley remained silent, looking at the floor.

"If you don't go... I'll go myself."

"You don't know where you want to go..."

"True, but I know this is the right thing to do."

He obviously wanted to be able to help Dee, but the main reason he wanted to go to the tower was to find out about her past, but he couldn't tell Kelley that.

"I'm going, are you with me or not?"

Nemesis extended her hand towards Kelley.

"Hmm..."

With a small grimace Kelley took Nemesis' hand and shook it.

"Don't regret your choice."

**********

Travelling to the Tower of Ascension Nemesis deepened his knowledge of the planet he had awakened on a few months earlier.

Humans were not the only creatures living on this world, in fact it was not uncommon to find a dwarf locked in a small forge or elves living in the forests.

Everything revolved around the tower, the only reason people came to this planet was to improve themselves and become one of the strongest beings in the universe, plus many gods and higher beings watched what happened in the tower, to satisfy their boredom, so it was also a great way to get noticed.

Slowly, however, more and more people could not get past the floors of the tower, or were simply no longer seeking power, and began to build on the planet, and slowly it became more and more populated, until it became like 'Earth'.

As they travelled they passed through many villages or towns, and thanks to the money Eadmond had given them they were always able to rest in a hostel and eat.

**********

"Now only a day's walk away, are you sure you haven't changed your mind yet?"

From above the precipice an immense steppe covered the whole landscape, with a tower reaching far beyond the sky, making it impossible to measure its overall height.

"Don't you ever get tired of asking me that? Every day you ask me the same question now.... Come on, on your way!"
