Jonah was sharpening his katana when we heard Master call us from the other room.
He placed his sword on the bed and headed to the living room. I followed closely behind him, “Yes, Master?” Jonah walked up to Master.
“Get packed. We are going on a mission.” Master glanced at me, “We will be going together.”
“And Marcia?” Jonah asked.
“Yes, her too.”
Jonah ran off to find Marcia. Master packed a bag full of provisions. “Are you packing for an army?” She chuckled softly, and more food moved into the bag. She proceeded to double and triple-check if there was enough food. “Is something wrong?”
“Well, it’s hard to say.” Master paused. She stared distantly at the bag. “I’ve felt this presence lately. It feels dangerous.”
“How do you mean?”
“Do you remember that day after your first hunt? You were probably around eight or nine.”
“I remember.” A shiver ran down my spine. Master continued to look at the container with food. Sweat dripped from her forehead, and her hair dropped in front of her face.
“I think he’s back.”
“Do you think he will affect our mission?”
Master smiled at me, “There should be no problems. He ignored us back then, so he will ignore us now.” Her fists balled tightly into her palm, and I couldn’t help but feel she was lying to me.
“I got Marcia,” Jonah waltzed into the room, breaking the tension. “What do we need to pack?”
Master gave each of us a list. The day ended quickly, and as the sun set, Marcia pulled out a small cake from the fridge. “Happy early birthday Gruffy. I made the cake today since we won’t have time tomorrow.”
The little chocolate cake was decorated with seventeen candles and cut-up strawberries. “How did you fit so many candles on a cake so tiny?”
“Honestly, I had a hard time of it. However, Jonah started sticking them on the sides and somehow got them to fit.”
“I love it.” My eyes scrunched up tightly as I thought of my wish. I want to be happy like this forever. I blew, and the fires went out one by one, leaving only three in the back still lit.
“You missed some,” Jonah teased, “I guess you won’t get your wish now.” I threw one of the candles at him.
