The movie kept my attention enough for me to not fall asleep, but I can’t say the same for Rufus. He had dozed off at some point, and now was leaning his head on my head. I had completely curled into his side at some point, so my head was at the perfect height to support his head. I carefully turned off the movie and closed the laptop lid, try to keep my movements slow so I didn’t wake him up. I don’t think that was a concern when he started snoring, I’m glad he wasn’t doing that during the movie. I wonder when the last time he properly rested, he’s been looking tired ever since I woke up in the hospital, and I’m sure having to heal from me mauling him didn’t help matters.
I decide that since I will mostly likely be stuck here for a while, I should try to rest as well. I am drifting off to sleep when I hear the door open. I am immediately on alert, but calm a bit when I see Dr. Greg and Carson walk in. They of course look towards the bed first, but when they see it’s empty, they glance over at the couch where we are. I am sure we are quite a sight, with big alpha Rufus, practically laying on me, while I’m huddled underneath, glaring at the world. Carson must agree with me because he burst out laughing, which Dr. Greg is quick to hush. I also put my finger to my lips in a way to silence them. As they quietly walked over to us, I could see Carson still working hard to contain his laughter at our situation. “How long as he been asleep?” Dr. Greg asked.
“Almost an hour. We were watching a movie, so I didn’t totally notice, but the movie ended about 15 minutes ago. He’s been looking like he really needs it, so I don’t mind. I was almost asleep myself before you guys walked in.” I responded in as hushed a voice as I could.
“That would have been cute to walk in on,” Carson said, “but you looking murderous while almost being squished by him was the best thing I have ever seen. Why exactly did you look like we needed to fear for our lives?"
“I didn’t know who was walking in, and I didn’t want anyone waking him up. Plus, as I said, I was almost asleep, and as Rufus can attest to from last night, I am not particularly pleasant when woken up unexpectedly.”
“Alright,” the doctor broke in, “How are you feeling Felix? Any more dizziness or feeling shaky?”
“No, I am feeling really good. I was able to eat almost all of my food this morning, and the little bit of walking around that this over-protective alpha has allowed me to do, has felt good. I have felt stable.”
“I am truly glad to hear that. I figured you would be pretty strong, but you still have been through a lot, and your body had been just about stretched to its max. Just make sure that you are still trying to rest and catch-up on much needed down time these next couple of days, even if you think you are feeling better. While alpha Rufus may be a little over bearing at times, he truly is only looking out for what’s best for you and for you to have a speedy recovery.”
“Ok, doctor. I know that I need to rest, I just get bored sitting around all day. I have never been one to sit still well. If there is nothing else, I would like to sleep a little, and I think Rufus should be allowed to sleep a little longer.” I say with my eyes switching between the two intruders and the door. Dr. Greg was the first to get the hint, and he simply grabbed Carson by the arm and pulled him towards the door.
“Oh, Felix, can you tell Rufus that I visited? After you two wake up from your nap, of course.” Carson said of his shoulder while being dragged out. I simply nod and curl back into Rufus’ side, getting comfortable again. Soon I am again drifting off to sleep curled up against Rufus.
I don’t know for how long I am asleep for, but I suddenly feel something move next to me. I reach out my hand, and feel a warm body next to me, then a soft rumbling accompanied by a low laugh. “I believe most people would just open their eyes in order to see what’s happening next to them, not just randomly flail their arm about.” I hear Rufus whisper near my ear. I crack one eye open to glare out him. “I don’t want to wake up. If I keep my eyes closed longer, than I can fall asleep again faster.”
“Well considering you are talking now I don’t think you will be going back to sleep too soon. Plus, you need to eat before you even thinking about sleep again. It has been almost 7 hours since you last ate, and you need to eat regularly if you want to get out of here.”
“UGH! Fine, but can you at least go get me some food then? Since I know you won’t let me walk anywhere, anyways.” I accompany that last statement with an eyeroll.
“Yes, kitten I will get you some food, but do you need to go to the bathroom first. I don’t want you walking around when I’m not here like you did last time, or no more pudding, at all.”
“Don’t threating my pudding like that!” I must admit, that came out sounding a little too much like a shriek for my liking, but what can I say, it’s for the pudding. “Fine, I’ll go really quick, but you have to stay here unless I call out for help, I don’t need you overseeing me going to the bathroom.” I make to stand up, but stumble a little, just because my legs had fallen asleep. I see Rufus move to help, but I glare at him until he stops.
I make it to the bathroom and back to the bed without incident, and then Rufus leaves to get us some food, but not before giving me another stern warning about staying put. I must admit, the cat side of me was really tempted to get back up, but after Dr. Greg’s warning earlier about not pushing myself, and the threat of my pudding being taken away, I decide it’s not worth messing with that stubborn alpha and say put. When Rufus get’s back, he is holding two plates that are piled with food. At the smell of it all, my mouth starts watering. Without realizing it, I had become quite hungry. “Um, Rufus, I don’t think there is any chance I can eat all of that, even with how hungry I am.”
“No worries, when you don’t want, I’ll eat. I am really hungry myself, and my appetite has never been an issue.” He sets one of the plates on my lap and hands me silverware. I quickly dig into the peas, mashed potatoes and tender chicken covered in gravy. I do have to put the mushrooms to the side, so they don’t contaminate the rest of my delicious food, but everything else is amazing. After I finish as much as I can, which was still less than half of the very full plate, I pass it over to Rufus, whole had already finished his whole plate, which was even more full than mine to begin with. I watch, very impressed, while he quickly polishes off the rest of mine, mushrooms, and all.
After he has put both plates back on the tray he carried them in on, he grabs two pudding cups. One he hands to me and the other he keeps. I, of course, start on my right off, but he takes a moment before opening his. “Thanks for letting me sleep. I hadn’t meant of fall asleep, especially while I was practically laying on top of you, but I appreciate it. It certainly has been a few days since I have slept that well.”
“Well since you have been looking dead on your feet these past couple of days, I figured you needed it. Plus, as much as it sounds weird to admit out loud, it was kind of nice curled up under you. I don’t think I have slept that well in a while either, because obviously passing out doesn’t really count. I don’t know what it is about you that makes me feel safe, but I am glad for it. I haven’t felt this at ease and comfortable since before me parents died when I was a teenager.”
He looks at me with this weird look that I don’t quite know how to interpret, but then he looks down at his pudding and starts eating it.
“Oh, yeah,” I say, trying to put that look out of my mind, “Dr. Greg and Carson stopped by when you were sleeping. Dr. Greg was checking on me, but Carson said something about needing to talk with you.”
“Oh? Did he say what he needed to talk to me about, or just that he needed to talk to me?” Rufus asks.
“Well actually all he said was that he wanted me to tell you that he visited, but he looked like he needed to talk to you.” I say, while finishing off the rest of my pudding cup.
“Ok, I am going to step out really quick and give Carson a call back. Will you be ok for a few minutes?” Rufus asks me. I quickly nod my head, and he steps out. I curl up on the bed and close my eyes. I know that I just woke up from a nap, but I am still so tired.
