A Throne of Potion and Mirrors

The Trouble with the Palace (Part 1)

The Trouble with the Palace (Part 1)

Sep 16, 2022

For the next couple of months, the four body doubles were trained to act like the Prince Regent. There were not many travels that he needed to take, so Jantra Kawa could take it over singlehandedly. Besides, the Prince Regent wasn't as triggered when riding a horse. So whenever he needed to go by horse, he could do it himself.

The first thing they learned was how to navigate the palace. It was a huge complex, divided to five specific zoning that consisted of several different buildings with the main building called Nakyagara Palace which was the private residence of the royal family at the top of Jade Hill and the center of the circular shaped area. Saka Subarsang, who had lived in the palace for fourteen years, was their guide for this subject.

As they toured with the physician's apprentice, they walked among fifty domesticated deer-like creatures that were released within the palace complex. These creatures were called nindeer. They had the body and antlers of a stag, mane of a lion and tail of a bird that could reach up to 2 meters long. Nindeer's fur normally had natural colors that could help them blend with their surroundings, but the ones that lived in the palace were mostly white or gray with white spots.

The palace complex had tunnels of giant banyan trees that grew all over the place. These tunnels helped shading their heads from the shining sun. Grasses grew on most part of the ground. Each building had gravel driveway and surrounded with grass and sand.

"That building is called Water Palace," Saka Subarsang pointed at a castle covered by heavily sculpted white stone. "It's the place where the queen, princesses and other noblewomen swim and bathe. It's forbidden for all men except the king. Any man who enters this building will be executed in sight, regardless the status."

They continued their walk through this extensive private property. While they crossed The Heavenly Garden and stole a glance at the practicing palace dancers, the palace musicians were performing at the nearby bandstand, making this moment truly feel like paradise.

The second thing they learned was the people. Renggi Nanta taught them about the royal family, the high officials, the officers and the important caretakers that they needed to know by name. They needed to know the people he liked, he disliked and he truly despised.

"Does the prince have a fiancée?" asked Amanji.

"No," answered Renggi Nanta.

"Dammit," cursed Kinalu, followed by his colleagues' guffaw.

Darga was struggling with remembering the names and the familial relationship those people had with the Prince Regent. He was baffled that almost everyone in the council and their subordinates were mostly the aristocrats and the Prince Regent's distant family.

"What do they know about the real life?" he asked.

The third and perhaps the most difficult thing they learned was the prince's mannerisms. As a Shadow who worked closely with the prince for years, Lir could tell every little detail about him and the way he conducted himself. The last time she had noticed Jantra Kawa as an impostor was because the way he had walked. He had been too aware of his surrounding due to his training as a guard. His eye level had also been too straight and direct, while the prince would look anywhere he wanted.

The prince's voice turned out to be another difficult thing to copy. According to Renggi Nanta, the way he talked was like he already knew the right answer, but he expected you to answer it wrong. In terms of the accent, they were lucky because Prince Basandaya had an accent that was commonly used by other Sanuratnan noblemen. If it's Prince Tapriyasta that they had to play, they'd face a higher difficulty, because he and his twin sisters had the accent that was exclusively used by the late Queen's family.

"Your voice is back," said Prince Grahuri when he bumped into the Prince Regent that morning.

"Ah, yes, today is a good day," Prince Basandaya instantly replied. "You know it's because of, uh... the..."

"Maharahi's healing potion, yes, you told me," Prince Grahuri nodded.

Genius, thought Prince Basandaya. He himself hadn't thought about how to explain the voice change.

"I guess it hasn't taken an effect today."

To make it easier for the transformation, Prince Basandaya's apartment was moved to the one in the center left of the palace. Only few people knew this, but this apartment's bedchamber had a secret room where the king or queen could hide in case there was an attack. It's also connected to another room where his personal guards could stay and watch him. The secret room would be the place where Prince Basandaya would hide when his body double took his place and traveled elsewhere.

The body doubles were simply overwhelmed by how the Prince Regent took a bath three times a day. They on the other hand only cleaned themselves when they felt like it. Not to mention the two attendants who helped him get dressed. With the fear of getting caught and to avoid the embarrassment, whenever it's their turn to wear the attire, they always asked the attendants to just leave the set in the bedchamber. It's Prince Basandaya himself who had to teach them how to wear his clothes properly.

After the grueling weeks of training, Renggi Nanta was ready to dispatch them. They always worked in pairs, as the Prince Regent and his personal guard. This system was made in case the potion's effect ran out before they finished the job. If that happened, the prince and the guard would make a switch.

Based on their characters and abilities, Renggi Nanta finally figured out who should go to where. Because of his similar voice and quick learning of the vocabulary, Kinalu went to the events that required the prince's speech. Darga's understanding of the 'real world' granted him a chance to attend all the meetings about the kingdom's economy. Hismar's mastery in janak kurat arts made the prince more relieved when sending him to make public appearances. He, too, would attend all the traditions and rituals for he knew better about them even than the prince himself. Amanji would go to social functions because of his surprisingly high alert and great memory that allowed him to recognize the people he'd be mingling with. She left Jantra Kawa to deal with politics because they were too afraid to touch that area.

Prince Basandaya always briefed them himself before sending them away. They were not allowed to go beyond their script. He taught them that if they were not sure on how to answer, they could always say, "Let me have time to think about it. I shall get back to you once I have the answer."

Facing with his plan of going on more hands-on operations, Kinalu had to ask, "But why? He's the regent. He can send any other people to go there. What's the point of being the most powerful man in the land if you can't tell people to do stuffs for you?"

"Isn't it obvious?" replied Hismar who rarely said a word during the training. "He doesn't trust anybody."

Meanwhile, Inggi had her own problems with her new job. She now worked as one of Princess Tastri's maids, replacing her former maid who was pregnant. Lir was kind enough to check up on her once every few days as well as giving her briefing and gathering reports.

Princess Tastri was born six minutes after Prince Tapriyasta and four minutes after Princess Tistara. Despite being twin sisters, Princess Tastri and Princess Tistara were not identical. She was skinnier, with longer legs and fingers, compared to Princess Tistara. Just like Prince Tapriyasta, her facial features were soft and round, with delicate oval face, pouty mouth and flawless beige skin. Inggi had never seen someone so glowing before.

That afternoon, the senior maids asked her to help them giving the Princess her spa ritual. Once they're ready, Inggi followed them who to the pristine architecture that was built on the east side of the palace complex. The Water Palace.

Passing through the arched doorway, Inggi was surprised by the lush open space in the middle of the building. Nymph statues made of white stone added the splendor to this little piece of paradise. A multi-level fountain was bringing music to her ears with its refreshing sound of splashing water. And a few steps down, the blue pool became the centerpiece of this state-of-the-art edifice.

When she ducked under the banana tree, she could see some female courtiers enjoying themselves in the water. Some other maids were standing by the pool to assist their patrons. Although no man was allowed to be in the place, it doesn't mean that no one was guarding it. Female guards that wore the same iron armors and armed with the same daggers were posted in every corner of the establishment. It's them who would execute any man who dared to trespass this restricted area.

The spa rooms were located on the east corner of the palace. A high bed was placed at the center of the room. There were two tables full of jars on both sides of the wall. While on the short end of the wall, a huge mirror was staring back at them. And above them, the ceiling was covered with vines.

Right after the aromatic candles were lit, Princess Tastri came into the room. The maids took off her clothes before she lay downward on the bed with only a piece of nayin covering her waist. And then six women began treating every part of her body. Inggi was tasked to handle her left leg and foot.

After her back massage was done, a maid unraveled the princess' bun and helped her turn around. Her long and wavy black hair was put inside a bowl of water where another maid would wash it. It also became the start of her facial treatment, with the soap, the scrub, all the way to the crystals.

It wasn't curious how the princess got her radiant glow. Inggi had to apply nine different things in nine different ways on her left leg only. Gently and carefully, every inch was cleaned, exfoliated and polished that not a single speck of dust was found. Even the nails on her toes must be shining.

Two hours later, Princess Tastri came out of the spa room with a luminous, soft and supple skin. Even the dressing room where she went next was immediately filled with the flowery fragrance of her body and hair.

Inggi was just learning how to arrange her low bun by watching her handmaiden, who was easily identified from the special red sash around her waist, doing so. Then a knock was heard on the door. The handmaiden opened it and announced the arrival of Nisti Dahisna, the royal dressmaker, to the princess. She came to fit the clothes for her upcoming public appearance where she would attend the mask festival parade.

"Can't we do it tomorrow?" asked Princess Tastri who was reading a book.

"My apologies, Your Highness, I'm afraid we don't have time tomorrow," answered Nisti Dahisna while she laid down the new bikaya and nayin on the armchair.

Inggi helped the dressmaker putting her folded mirror and set her pedestal in front of it.

"I have all the time in the world, but not today," Princess Tastri turned a page on her book. "Today I would like to finish this book so I can pick up a new one tomorrow."

Nisti Dahisna just stood there, trying to find the right words to tell the princess that it was her who didn't have the time. Inggi could see how tired she was and she too would like to not do it now. But if it turned out there's more work to do on that bikaya, she wouldn't be able to finish it by tomorrow.

"Excuse me, Your Highness," the new maid spoke up. "I can help read it to you while Nisti Dahisna fits you on your new bikaya."

Princess Tastri slowly looked up from the book. Inggi was staring at her own feet, unable to see how startled the princess was hearing her speak.

"What did you say?" snarled the princess.
