“I got it!” Natalie exclaimed, standing up out of the old school chair she had been sitting in for the past couple of hours. She held a small vial full of a clear liquid. “I think I’ve got it!”
“G-got…w-what?” Oliver asked, his breathing becoming more shallow by the minute.
“I think I finally have it, Oliver!” Natalie said, running over to Oliver’s side. “Please, drink this.”
“O-ok,” Oliver said, drinking the liquid from the vial.
After Oliver drank the liquid from the vial, Natalie set the vial on the cart next to him and watched Oliver, looking for any signs of him getting better.
“How are you feeling?” Natalie asked, feeling a little hopeful.
“The…s-same,” Oliver said.
Natalie’s hopeful look then dropped.
“I’m so sorry, Oliver,” Natalie said, taking Oliver’s hand in her’s.
“I-it’s…ok. Y-you d-did e-everything y-you c-could,” Oliver said with a small smile.
His smile then immediately dropped as he closed his eyes.
“Oliver?” Natalie said, suddenly worried.
Oliver didn’t respond.
“Oliver?!” Natalie repeated, feeling his pulse.
His pulse was low, too low.
He was dying.
“Oliver?!” Natalie pleated. “Please…you can’t leave me.”
Tears began to stream down Natalie’s face.
“Please! You have to stay! Your sister needs you!” Natalie said, weeping. “I…I need you.”
Oliver didn’t respond.
Natalie felt his pulse again.
It was even lower.
Natalie got up and quickly wiped her tears. She began performing CPR on Oliver.
After a few minutes of Oliver not responding, Natalie decided to give up and let her tears drown her as she held his hand.
“I’ll go get the others to say ‘goodbye’,” Natalie said, getting up and wiping her tears.
She finally dropped his hand and walked out of the room, all the way to the cafeteria.
Everyone was there, enjoying lunch.
“Guys,” Natalie said, her voice breaking.
Everyone turned to face her and stopped talking.
“What’s up, Nat?” Noah asked, concerned why Natalie looked like she had been crying and was about to break at any second.
“Oliver…he…he’s…he’s dying,” Natalie said. She began to cry again and fall to her knees, she cupped her face. “Go…go say…your…‘goodbyes.’”
Natalie began to cry harder.
Everyone then got up and started rushing to go see Oliver.
Noah stayed behind with Cora.
Noah went over to Natalie and picked her up, princess style.
“Let’s go say ‘goodbye’ to him together,” Noah said, walking with Natalie in his arms to the Nurse’s office.
