“It all started over a hundred years ago. In our homeland where dragons roamed free everyday. In that time dragons would bond with humans, both the good and the bad. It was this bonding to have believed to start a tragic war. The war between our homeland and the Black-Wind Clan,” Sarah said as she sat next to Renea with her hugging her side.
“Your grandfather’s story began with a battle. It was to be his last battle as he fought for the crown in the war. He was a fine warrior, and would do anything to protect his kingdom and his family,” Sarah said with a smile on her face.
Renea stared at her with excitement in her eyes as she listened intently to the past. She was a warrior too, and she would work hard to keep her own family safe. Though she wasn’t going to tell her keeper that, not yet anyways.
“The battle around him raged on harshly as blood spilled onto the ground, there is no honor in war. Those words rang through Gast's head repeatedly they were the words of his father. When he was younger he couldn't say that he agreed all that much. Now as he watched his brothers in arms, his comrades, his friends burn in flames and cut down by blades he understood those words to be truth.
Breathing deeply he dodged a blade that was aimed for his throat. His own blade soon sliced through flesh as Gast heard a sickening crack. Holding down his disgust he cut down any enemy that got in his way. He needed to survive he craved to return home to his wife and his son. He would return home to a home cooked meal, and a family that he loved. He didn't plan to back down, those were his thoughts as a dragon's roar echoed throughout the skies.
Immediately his head shot across the island to see a huge dragon above the two armies that were collided. It was terrifying, a dragon of pure gold glistening in the sunlight. Two blood red eyes glowed darkly while blood stained teeth moved as the dragon let out a roar. A top its back was an armor clad warrior, covered head to toe in many colorful dragon scales.
Panting Gast looked around as many of his comrades began to run away, none of them were willing to face a dragon. Even with all of the dragons that they had on their side, they were terrifying, this dragon was at least thrice the size of any of the dragons that Gast had ever encountered. He wasn’t going to back down, even if it meant death. He would not let anyone get near his love, his son or his sister. He had too much to protect to let himself go down without a fight.
Clenching the sword in his hand he let it drop to the ground. Then he pulled the bow off of his back as he stared at the dragon that breathed a beautiful and terrifying golden flame. He was not going down with out a fight and he didn’t care who tried to stop him, he would take them down.
He gripped onto the arrow in his hand with a grimace from the pain as he aimed it at the rider rather than the dragon itself. He could clearly see the way his fellow warriors ran away, and instead of staying to die he ran. He ran after his comrades however as he did unlike the other warriors he aimed the bow while in motion and let the first arrow fly. It missed.
Gritting his teeth he clutched the bow tighter as he pulled out another arrow from the quiver around his waist. Ten more shots after this one, and he had never been a good shot. The likely hood of him hitting the target which was moving swiftly through the sky was slim to none, but he didn’t plan to give up. Not yet.
As he ran her notched another arrow and aimed for the sky where the dragon was flying. He narrowed his eyes before he let another arrow fly, this time it hit the dragon right through its left eye. Gast didn’t have time to congratulate himself, he had to get off of the battle field.
“Gast we have to get out of here!” He heard someone shout at him.
He didn’t have to be told and didn’t respond as he kept running. He had to survive, gritting his teeth he aimed another arrow, this time it hit its target. It hit the rider straight through the arm. He heard a loud and pained scream that wasn’t what terrified him, no it was the dragon that let out a huge monstrous roar through the sky.
The next thing he knew, he was on the edge of a cliff. Alone.
Pain ricocheted through Gast's shoulder, his arm was gone and a blood raging dragon was roaring overhead. He wasn’t even sure how he got into this situation and only knew that he was in danger. Slowly he lifted his gaze to the dragon that was roaring, he was filled with grief. His rider was dead, and Gast was his killer.
“You will pay! Everyone you love, and everything you care about will be gone. I will destroy it all!” The dragon’s rough voice echoed through Gast’s head.
“I won’t let that ever happen,” Gast growled in response.
“I promise you, I will make your whole life hell!” The dragon roared as it spread it wings wide.
Gast stumbled backwards, there was no way for him to defeat such a powerful beast. The dragon roared again, turning its attention to the castle. The castle that lay in the Southern Mountains. Gast's eyes filled with pure terror, his wife, his son, and his widowed sister were there. His family.
"No!" Gast shouted.
However as the dragon turned I head to Gast it growled in fury. Anger filled its eyes as it let out a terrifying roar. Anger, fear, sadness, grief and determination all filled Gast’s chest as he stared at the dragon with dark brown eyes, glowing a dark golden color.
‘There’s only one way I can defeat this thin,’ Gast thought as his shoulders slumped.
‘I’m sorry my love, Catherine. I won’t be returning to you my darling,’ He thought more slowly as he reached into his vest and pulling out a small stone key.
‘My son, please never give up and live a good and free life,’ Gast thought even more.
Gulping down his fear Gast held it up for the dragon to see and the beast let out a mighty roar echoing through the air. Hearing the dragon’s roar of fury he looked down to the clouds that swirled below him. In determination he held the key close the key which held power glowed as Gast put all of his energy into it.
He let himself cry, he let the tears fall as he felt his life leaving him. With a shout he began to chant the spell that could kill himself and the dragon before him.
“By the power of light and darkness,
take this pure soul and use its power,
to take the corrupted to stone,
take this strength and seal away those who oppose and stray!” Gast shouted and as he felt cold stone begin to encase his body. Before him he watched the dragon let out a blast of golden flames towards the man before it, but had stopped in the sky as it fell. It fell as stone surrounded and encased his body. Slowly Gast closed his eyes until he felt nothing, except for the cold hard stone that covered him.
Unknown to everyone around him who had always put him down for his peaceful ways, he was the one to save thousands. For the people no longer had control of the Golden Dragon, they weren’t able to defeat the men who were determined to protect their land and family. Without the power of the Golden Dragon the people of the Black-Wind Clan were not able to control the dragons of others. The Black-Wind Clan had to retreat in order to fight another day. No one would have ever imagined that a lowly solider would ever be able to deafeat the almighty Gold Dragon Kryton,” Sarah spoke with enthusiasm before looking back down at the child in her arms.
A warm smile graced her face when she saw Renea sound asleep. Slowly Sarah laid her down onto the bed so her head was on the pillow. Ever so carefully she tip toed out of the room, knowing that the child was a light sleeper and would wake up if she weren’t careful.
