TW: Brief mention of suicide
Milo’s POV
“Is there something going on between you and Milo?” Sare asked one night.
“No. At least I don’t think so. Why do you ask?” I said. Was there something going on I hadn’t noticed? We hadn’t seen each other much lately… but I assumed that was just because we were busy.
“Funny, he said the same thing,” She said quietly, as if I wasn’t supposed to hear.
“You asked him first?” I asked, kind of confused as to why she’d ask her boyfriend’s friend before her actual boyfriend about their relationship.
“Ya, it was just convenient timing, nothing to do with yo-” She was interrupted by her phone ringing. She glanced down at the contact name which I didn’t manage to catch and her eyes lit up. “Sorry, I have to take this.” She said, standing up, phone in hand.
“Sure,” I said, doing my best not to eye her suspiciously. Who was she talking to?
Once she had eventually finished her call, she set her phone down on the coffee table by the couch. “I’m gonna go to the bathroom real quick,” She said, smiling and patting me on the shoulder as she left.
Maybe it was just me but she seemed even happier than her usual bubbly self. Now I was really curious who she was talking to. Should I check? She had told me her password but it felt unethical to go through her phone without her permission. But I had to know.
I picked up her phone and typed in the code to look at her call list. The most recent call read ‘Jake <3.’ I should’ve stopped there, in fact I shouldn’t have started, but my curiosity got the best of me. Who the hell is Jake? And why does he have a heart next to his name? I began to open their text messages, but ended up quickly slamming the phone back down on the table as Sara re-entered the room.
She stopped in her tracks. “Were you… going through my phone just now?” She asked with the most serious tone I had ever heard her use.
“No… I mean yes, but I can explain!” I said, standing up and waving my arms around as if that would prove my innocence.
“Shoot,” She said, arms crossed and giving me a look that said she was pissed.
“Uh…” I said I could explain, but honestly, I didn’t really know what to say. “Well I was just really curious why you looked so happy and you usually don’t take calls from other people when you’re with me so…”
“So you decided to, instead of just asking me, go through my phone without my permission?” She asked, frowning.
“Well yes…” I stopped to think. “But you’re not off the hook either.” I said, suddenly remembering what I had seen. I began walking towards her, now upset, “Who the hell is Jake?” I asked, stopping a few feet in front of her.
“Oh…” her face went from anger to sadness in a matter of seconds. “Well, he’s my ex girlfriend’s brother,”
“Your ex’s brother…? Wait, girlfriend?” I had more questions than I had started with.
“Ya, I never told you but I’m actually bisexual. And… well I don’t know how to say this but… my ex tried to kill herself and didn’t tell me or anything until after the fact. I was so upset I broke up with her and she ended up going to a residential hospital. She just got discharged today. Her brother just told me that. We’re just really close friends, nothing more…” She explained.
“So that’s why you were so happy…” I said, thinking out loud. “Wait… you don’t still like her do you?” I asked, suddenly becoming even more concerned.
“About that…” She started nervously.
