“GRUFF! HAPPY SEVENTEENTH!” I woke suddenly from the sound of Jonah yelling. I jumped out of bed; my fists held up. I surveyed the room when once more, “GRUFF! HAPPY SEVENTEENTH!” I smacked the top of the alarm clock sitting on my bedside table.
It has been seven days since my birthday week started, and Jonah has played a birthday prank on me every day. It was funny at first, but now I want to hit him.
“Where is Jonah?” I asked Master as calmly as I could.
“He is setting up an elaborate birthday contraption to prank you.” Master walked away with her hands behind her back, whistling.
I followed closely behind her. “Did he tell you what this prank was?”
“No, he knew I would rat him out. He still told me, so he must be pretty confident about it.”
“I guess he would be. He is the self-proclaimed prank master after all.”
Master and I laughed at the title Jonah had given himself when he was fifteen. “I will admit, his pranks have gotten a little better, but the stuff he pulls does not measure up to Marcia’s pranks.” Master wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Where is Marcia?” I sat at the table, and Master placed a muffin in front of me.
“She went to the village. I sent her to pick up a few things for the trip. She should be back within the hour.”
“Are we really taking on this mission? What about his presence? Do you still feel it?”
“He’s here, but he is keeping a distance. We should be safe. Even if he makes a move, we are the only battle-ready Guardians in the area. If the monsters decide to attack the village, the people will not be able to defend themselves.”
“They can die for all I care,” I said under my voice.
Master raised her eyebrows. I sighed, I know she loves everyone no matter what, but I can’t do the same. After all the pain I suffered because of that stupid village. I will never forgive them.
“I’m back,” Marcia walked into our home. “I got the preserved foods for the safe house, but getting it this early in the morning wasn't easy. That village is like a ghost town from dusk till dawn. I’m almost shocked anyone lives there at all.”
“I feel the same way.” Master stated, “This is why we must go on this mission. I hope to make that village feel safe-“
POP!
The three of us rushed to the back door to find it blown open by a gross, gooey Jonah. We laughed as the poor guy tried to scrape the goo from his arms and legs. “Damn it! It wasn’t supposed to go off yet!”
Marcia giggled behind her hands, and Master was crying from laughter.
