Losing Hope

Chapter 5: A Helping Hand

Chapter 5: A Helping Hand

Sep 07, 2022

DAY TWO

It was even warmer than the day before. Nathan woke up with a jolt, it took a while for him to fully wake up. He was sweating everywhere, he felt like he was burning alive. He immediately stood up and ran for the ocean. He plummeted into the water, sighing as the salty water cooled down his body. His clothes were now wet, but he didn't care. At least they had the ocean to keep them cool on warm days. He slowly stood up, his neck cramped from the way he slept.

He groaned and walked to the girl, he stared at her for a while before trying to shake her awake. She was also sweating, but she looked more graceful that he probably looked. Her cheeks were a bright red and her eyes were puffy and pink from her crying the day before. He didn't want to wake her up, she looked so peaceful. But she couldn't sleep forever, she was probably dehydrated and needed new clothes and food. Thinking about that, Nathan realized that he hadn't eaten any of the food he found yet, but surprisingly he wasn't hungry.

"Hey, wake up." He shook her again, watching as her eyes slowly fluttered open. She moaned and turned onto her side. She shooed him away with her hand. Nathan understood that she wanted to sleep more, but he needed to wake her up.

"Come on, please. I'm going to throw you into the ocean if you don't wake up." He teased with no emotion. He lightly shook her again then rested his hand on her arm. She stretched, her face nuzzling into the clothing pillow he had made for her. Nathan retraced his hand and looked at her face.

Her eyes slowly opened, revealing bright blue diamonds. She was stunning, although her hair looked like a mess, she was still beautifull. Nathan wondered what her name was. They had introduced themselves in the beginning of the year, but he couldn't remember everyone.

It took her a while to open her eyes fully. Since she was facing the sun, her eyes immediately shut again. She blinked a couple of times to adjust to the brightness. She slowly started to sit up, she looked around her and set her eyes on Nathan. He didn't exactly know what to do with her. He watched as her face grew grim and her eyes widened. Nathan guessed she was processing all her thoughts.

"Hi, are you feeling alright?" Nathan spoke in a quiet voice, he didn't want to frighten her even more than she already was. She was already traumatized. He watched as her body became stiff, she teared her eyes off of the sand and onto him.  She reached her hand out to him. He glanced at her hand, brushing his fingers over hers.

"I'm alright... Thank you." She murmured in a raspy voice. Before Nathan could do anything, she was wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him tight. She was tearing up, because Nathan could feel a wetness on his shoulder where her face was. His shirt was already dried from the heat of the sun.

"What's your name?" Nathan finally asked. She moved away and looked him in the eyes, before she realized that she was hugging him and crying in his arms without him knowing who she was. The side of her lips curved up, forming a tiny smile.

"My name is Elize, and you are?" She answered, her voice was still raspy, but it sounded a bit better.

"I'm Nathan. Are your feet okay? When I found you yesterday they looked pretty bad." He glanced at her feet, they were mostly filthy, from what he could see. But he was scared that maybe she sprained her ankle or burned herself.

"They just sting a bit, but I guess it'll be fine." Elize answered, there was a moment of silence before she talked again. She looked at his hair and his pants. "Why are you wet?" She asked with a dumbfounded expression.

"Oh- I.. uh, I jumped into the water." Nathan smirked at her without explaining to her why. Elize just looked at him, eyes wide and mouth slightly open. She looked confused.

"It's hot, and I can't really handle extreme heat, so-" Nathan tried explaining, he cut himself off. "You get it right? You're also sweating." He pointed out. Elize wiped her forehead with the back of her hand and slowly got up. Nathan stood up with her incase she lost her balance.

"I guess you're going to have to get used to the heat." She said to him. Nathan was surprised that she could stand up on her own. She looked around, seeing the bodies all scattered around. She began shivering, she put her hand over her mouth. She looked back at him before looking at the plane.

"Dear God... How the hell did this all happen?" Elize asked. He didn't know how to answer, and just stayed quiet. She gulped, and bowed her head down. "We got any food?" She looked up at Nathan, he was a whole head taller than her. Nathan nodded and pointed to the suitcases he found the night before.

"We got snacks, clean water, toiletries and clean clothes." He stated in a calm tone. "I can try to find your suitcase if you want. I already found mine." He said to her while she was looking at the damaged plane again.

"Yeah, sure. I'm going to go rinse off, then we can look for it." Elize said looking at the sea, taking a small step to see if it hurt when she put pressure on her feet. She hissed but walked to the shore and sat down in the sand. She sighed and slowly crawled more into the water. Nathan just stood there, watching her small frame being engulfed by the water. He walked back to the suitcases and zipped one open. He searched for a water bottle and opened the cap. He took a big sip and closed it agian.

He looked back to where Elize sat in the water. She was rubbing her skin, probably trying to wash off smoke and grime. Her hair was now wet, it had turned a dark blonde now. Nathan looked back at the suitcases before truding to where Elize was.

"What does your suitcase look like?" He asked her while crouching down beside her. She turned back to look at him. Her face was now clean and Nathan could see all her features properly now. He felt himself blush, there was definitely something wrong with him. He avoided her gaze and looked back at the plane.

"It's a neon pink colour. I'm sure it will stand out. Thanks, by the way." She answered and smiled at him, then focused once more on cleaning her feet. "No problem, we have to find a way to survive anyway." He said before walking away. The plane wasn't far away. He entered the little room and started to search for her suitcase.

After a minute of looking, he finally found it. It was stashed underneath some other bags. He pulled it out and dragged it out of the plane. He saw Elize walking up to him, she looked up at him and reached out for the suitcase.

"It's fine, I'll carry it. You're the one whose injured." He said. She looked at him surprised before giving a tiny nod. They walked back to the rest of the suitcases. He laid hers next to the others. He zipped it open for her.

"Get clean clothes and change." He said before going to his suitcase to also get clothes. They changed facing away from each other. Nathan blushed after pulling his pants up. He grabbed his shirt and pulled it over his head. "You done?" He asked Elize.

"Almost." She answered him. It sounded like she was struggling. Nathan hesitated before asking, "Need help?" He said softly. There was a moment of silence before she answered. "Yes, please." She said.

Nathan slowly turned her way and saw her struggling to pull up her pants. She already had a blouse on. She was wobbling on one foot trying to balance herself. Nathan chuckled. He could feel his face become hot. He didn't know if it was because of the heat or the fact that a girl was standing in front of him with no pants on. He walked to her and told her to hold onto his shoulders.

She placed her hands firmly on his shoulders and looked down as Nathan grabbed her pants and slowly pulled them up. The pants struggled to go past her hips. Nathan paused and tugged on them. "They're too small." He stated. He was confused as to why she would pack clothes what were to small for her. She stayed silent for a second and let go of his shoulders.

She bended down to her suitcase and grabbed another pair. She tried tugging her pants down before Nathan grabbed her hands and placed them back onto his shoulders. He could see her blush in the corner of his eyes. He pulled them down and she stepped out of it. He picked it up and threw the pants into her suitcase. He took the new pair and rolled them up so that she could step into them.

She placed her feet into it and Nathan pulled them up. He tried to avoid looking at her thighs. He pulled them over her waist and zipped the zipper up. He stood straight and looked at Elize. She was all clean now and her hair was almost dry. Her hands were still on Nathan's shoulders. She noticed and quickly retracted her hands. "Thank you." She thanked him and looked into his eyes for a second before looking away.

"No problem." He smiled.
