'We are Adhero, Sanesro e Idaro Ebi,' proclaimed Sanesro. 'destined to fight in revenge of the hosts of Diuren Garan against God. Our father Aro Ebi faced the Sword of God, and he died. Our grandfather Sanelo faced the Might of God, and from the heavenly abodes he was exiled. And our great-grandfather Sil Ebi faced the Rage of God, and he died. Must we face God, and die?'
Then Idaro came forward, hands up to God, and said at the rhythm of the melody of his brother: 'With bellicose spirits we had marched to Kasatan to face God, but with pious hearts, Oh King of Lords, we approach to You, seeking the end of war which thousands of mortal souls had thrown into the Akan River, foolish to believe themselves capable of matching the Might of God.'
'You say you came with pious hearts, 'replied God, and Their voice boomed inside the heads of the three brothers, 'yet you had fooled Nis Adi with the various tricks of the shapeshifters, and you had defeated and held the soul of Aman Emi with the hidden arts of witchcraft. Would you try to use those same tricks to subjugate My Divine Being to your wicked will, mortals?'
'For the Thousand Fires on the high mounts of Saillan, we would not dare to lift not even a finger against You,' replied Adhero, 'for it is not convenient for mortals to seek divine power. But long years had passed in a single winter night, and the world is dying. There are no animals anymore, and the few trees that remain —they hold to life in a battle they're about to lose. We came to the impregnable palace of Kasatan to ask You to return the light of this world to the mortal human beings, for it is not fair for God to do as They pleases with us.'
'Why, Adhero Ebi, should I do that? Shall I give you back the light of day and night so you, insatiable bellies, may keep your lives of greed and wickedness, forgotten the ways I gave you when I created this Universe? What need have I of, I who am omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent?'
Adhero spoke no longer, but presented the sword of Aman Emi to God.
'Behold the Sword of God. My father Aro Ebi faced it in unequal combat, and he died. It faced me in unequal combat, and I took hold of it. In exchange of it, I wish the light of this word.'
God took the Sword with his divine hand.
'Behold, 'continued Adhero,' the soul of Aman Emi.'
'What do you wish in exchange of them?'
'The return of spring,' answered Idaro.
'And who shall I designate as Lord of the Thousand Fires on the high mounts of Saillan?'
That question took them off guard, unable to comprehend the Thoughts of God. And in front of them appeared the answer, for they finally understood the reason behind the fate of Sanelo and the betrayal of Diuren Garan; for the former had tried to end the war after seeing the last of his siblings die. Thereafter, the King had repudiated him, and when God had turned the armies against Diuren Garan, Sanelo did not warn him; instead, he flew to the forest and to his wife so he could save his grandchildren.
And they understood something -God was no more omniscient, omnipresent nor omnipotent, for the Queen and the King had been Their eyes, and Aman Emi was the vessel of Their might. An so, when Diuren Garan was killed and his wife fell into a endless sleep, God could see no more. Therefore, They hadn't able to see the approach of the three brothers, letting them face and trick Nis Adi, and then they subjected with magic the Might of God. But why did God allow that to happen was something they didn't dare to ask, for they knew it was not convenient for mortals to try to understand the Mind of God.
And so, when the three brothers understood this, they found the soul of Ada Ebi standing next to the divine throne, but there was no sign of God. With the love they had for her, they took the hand of Ada Ebi and set out the way back to the Mortal World. And when the arch of heaven was again over their heads, the last quarter of the night was about to end. So they took the shape Sil Ebi had long ago taken to save his daughter, and they flew eastward, where they knew they would find Sanelo.
With the death of the King, the last day of the world has come. There is no more light on the sky nor life on the earth. God has forsaken humankind, and it is all Sanelo's fault. Now he wonders through the last night, looking for forgiveness, but there's no one to give it. Or so he thinks...
