“Gruff, do you know what a Guardian is?” Master asked. I’ve been in this house for a few days now, and nowhere has made me feel more at home.
“What is it?”
“A Guardian is a person who protects other people. They use magic to keep monsters away from villages.”
“Cool!”
“Would you want to be a Guardian?” I shook my head frantically. Master’s hand tussled my hair, “It won’t be easy; do you still want to do it?”
I shook my head again.
I woke from being jostled from side to side. “Hey, dude,” Jonah said, “It’s your turn to keep watch. I need my beauty sleep.”
“It’s going to be cold,” I said, half-asleep.
“Yeah, the mountain is always colder halfway up. Just put on your jacket and quit whining.”
“Jerk.”
Jonah laughed.
“Is there any dried fruit? I need something to keep me awake.”
“You can’t have any. We are restocking the safe house with it. Now shut up so I can sleep.”
“Jerk,” I stiffened a laugh. The safehouse reminded me of Jonah’s last attempt at a prank.
“It was his idea,” I defended myself. Master crossed her arms.
“Though it was initially my idea, Gruff was the one who decided to use magic.”
“But you were the one who set off a chain of lightning through the safe house.”
“But-“
Jonah and I received a thwap from Master, stopping us mid-fight. “It was both of you who almost destroyed the safe house. You’re just lucky that there wasn’t any serious damage.”
Marcia cleaned the broken bottles of preservatives from the safe house. Master was even more furious after that. She punished us by making us sleep outside for the rest of the week because we didn't clean up our mess.
Time drifted, and eventually, it was Marcia’s turn to keep watch. I gently woke her; she rubbed her eyes and told me to sleep. I drifted in and out of sleep for a while before falling into a deep sleep once more.
