David fell to the ground as he completed Shībài zhě’s
ridiculous training. His arms were hurting and Shībài zhě was busy watching the
T.V.
“Looks like your done.” Shībài zhě said when he saw that David had dropped to the ground. “Took you long enough. It’s already 1 P.M.”
“That was torture,” David said as he rubbed his arms. “My arms hurt.”
“It will continue to hurt because you are massaging your arms with them.” Shībài zhě pointed out.
“Then I have another plan,” David said, getting up quickly. “There is a massage chair in the lounge. I can just go there. And I can also get some food and drinks using my brother's credit card.”
As David walked, his arms hung beside him loosely.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Shībài zhě said as he also got up after David.
“What?” David answered not knowing what he was missing.
“The second part of your training.” Shībài zhě said. “Always walk on your tiptoes unless I say so.”
“Seriously.”
“By the way, where are we? This is quite a fancy apartment. What does your brother do to even afford this place.” Shībài zhě said as he went through the unopen door.
“This is the MD apartment building owned by the MD company which was created by my brother,” David answered when he got through the door by pushing it with his shoulder instead of his hands.
“THE MD COMPANY.” Shībài zhě said.
The MD company is the biggest in the world with numerous divisions such as hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and even in electronics with it expanding every year. The biggest of their project is the New York MD hotel which has been known as the most luxurious and VIP hotel in the world. David and Shībài zhě were currently in the MD apartment building which has been known for being both comfortable and affordable. It even had a restaurant and bar attached to it for people to relax it. For the high-class people who wish to form connections with MD would buy the apartments in this place which they would then give for rent to get a large return on investment as a bonus. The MD company also managed to establish itself in China where many factories are present, and many hotels and apartments are also been built there.
“Yup that’s the one,” David said, utterly relaxed in his massage chair. “Now can you stop fawning over my brother’s company? I’m trying to relax.”
David had already ordered a cold drink and some sandwiches for himself from the restaurant down below. While it was being made, David had sat down in a massage chair where he was also reading a book that he had put on his lap since he couldn’t move his hands.
“So, what are you reading anyways?” Shībài zhě asked David after he had finished describing the MD company.
“Oh, I’m trying to learn Chinese,” David said. “I think that it might be helpful especially since you’re here.”
“Why not just ask me to teach you?”
“I’ve already seen your teaching method. I have to say, not that big of a fan.”
“At least it’s effective.”
David and Shībài zhě spent the rest of the time waiting for the food in discussions about the T.V that Shībài zhě had been watching. The food did not take long to arrive and once that was finished, they returned to the gym where Shībài zhě gave David another task.
“Now kick the punching bag. 1000 times. 500 with each foot.” Shībài zhě said and once again, David began his training.
After that was completed, it was already 6 P.M. David fell to the ground once again. Shībài zhě and David then heard the front door opening. They both rushed out to see if Marc had returned and sure enough, there he stood with Chandler behind him, looking as ancient as before.
“There you are, my brother,” Marc said happily as he took off his jacket. “Why are you on your tiptoes.”
“Part of his training.” Shībài zhě said before David could answer. “And as you can see, he is perfectly fine. Now, the information.”
“Ha-ha.” Marc laughed as he sat down on the couch and David followed suit. “A man of business huh.”
“You can say that.” Shībài zhě answered.
“So. What do you want to know.” Marc signaled to Chandler. He brought a bottle of beer for Marc and a soda for David who happily took it as he was parched.
“How do you know the old man?” Shībài zhě asked without wasting a second.
“You mean Mr. Zhao? He is an associate.”
“How so.”
“I assume that you know by now that I am the founder of the MD company.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, my company also has a division that is not as well known as my other divisions.”
“The superpowered division.”
“Yes. But the proper scientific name is the Chāojí dàguó department.”
“A Chinese name?” David asked with a puzzled face.
“Yes,” Marc replied as he took a sip of his beer.
“But why?” David asked with an even more puzzled expression.
“That’s because the earliest record of superpowered beings goes back to 248 B.C. Can you guess why Mr. Min?”
“The Terracotta army.”
“You mean the clay army that was made in China hundreds of years ago?” David answered. “Wasn’t it made by the first king of China to protect his tomb?”
“That’s right my little brother,” Marc said as he patted him on the head. “They were a product of an ability. The person was the first king himself. That is also the reason why we call them Chāorén. Or simply, superhumans.”
“Of that scale?” Shībài zhě said, with fear in his voice. “Does anyone else have that kind of ability?”
“No. not anymore.” Marc answered. “That was presumably the origin of these abilities and they have gotten less powerful over the years.”
Shībài zhě sighed in relief at the confirmation that there wasn’t such a big threat out there.
“But it seems that due to the weakened abilities, the number of people with abilities has increased. That is what this department does. Locate them and keep them under check all the while making them invisible from the world. The Le Zhao job center is one of our many branches.”
“So basically, You guys are like the Men In Black,” David said. “Or kind of like an oppressive government.”
“Don’t worry,” Marc said in a calming voice. “We make sure that once a person awakens their powers, they can adapt to their new lives much easier.”
“And what does this new life entail.” Shībài zhě asked with his arms crossed.
“Challenges and battles with other superhumans. These usually end in death. Which is what we try to avoid the most.”
“Then do you have a way to stop this from happening to me and David?” Shībài zhě asked, very eager.
“Not that we know of no. But don’t worry, we will find a way.” Marc added soothingly to his little brother. “Anything else you need to know?”
Neither David nor Shībài zhě spoke as they were processing what they had just heard.
“Then, how about a rematch huh?” Marc said as he stood up.
“In what?” David asked.
“Medal of Duty of course.” Marc said as he rushed to the console on the table under the T.V. “You will see that I’ve been practicing.”
The rest of the evening passed with both David and Marc playing video games. Shībài zhě also got involved by helping David in the game but after a few victories, Shībài zhě turned to Marc’s side because David was getting too cocky. Shībài zhě had no luck so he stepped back to the kitchen where Chandler stood while the other two continued to play.
“Energetic aren’t they,” Chandler said as he prepared dinner.
“Tell me about it.” Shībài zhě answered as he leaned against the counter. “If I could drink anything right now, I would go for something strong.”
“We don’t have anything that strong,” Chandler replied. “But you have to admit, when you stand back and look at them being so happy, you cannot help but be happy with them and also be proud of them.”
Shībài zhě didn’t say anything but all he did was nod at what Chandler said and looked back at how happy David was. In his heart, he felt something he had not felt for a long time. He felt proud and happy that he was helping David. Dinner was served not long after. Once Dinner was finished, they all played charades in which they all laughed and made fun of each other, including Chandler. By the time everything was done, it was already 10 P.M.
“You were lucky that today I let you take a day off school,” Marc said as he headed off to his bedroom. “You’re going tomorrow.”
“Alright alright,” David answered as he also made his way towards his bedroom. “Goodnight Marc.”
“Goodnight Little bro,” Marc said, and he entered his room.
Both Shībài zhě and David went to David’s room where David lay down on the bed.
“See you in a minute Mr. zhě,” David said as he looked at Shībài zhě.
“See you in a minute kid.” Shībài zhě answered as he saw David close his eyes and go to sleep.
