“I see you have done what was required.” Dacia smiled at Iola, her tone of voice a bit more cordial than before.

“Yes, even if it was quite by accident.” Iola made Esamus nod as he walked up to her. “How is your wound?”

“Ah, I’ll live.” The mercenary princess laughed and pointed at her neatly bandaged wound. “Nothing but a little scratch.”

“So what now, my princess.” Iola had Esamus smile. “We have quite the gathering to address here at the City Square.”

“Yes, we do.” Dacia exhaled and looked over her shoulder to the entrance leading to the staging platform. “From there Esamus has held many such public addresses to the people of the city over the years. This day would be his last.”

“So it will.” Iola took a deep breath. “Let us do this.”

The princess nodded and stepped aside to allow Iola have Esamus walk up the stairway.

As she ascended the polished marble of the well cut stairs, Iola glanced over at where Nesmir stood, holding her near comatose body close to him, hidden behind some dense tapestry.

He gave her a nod and an encouraging smile.

She needed that quite desperately.
