The Wolf and his Moon

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Oct 10, 2022

Aadolf

Sometimes it takes carving the opportunities denied to us out of immovable stone, patiently chipping away until we have finally built ourselves a different destiny. It takes longer and it's more difficult but do not give up hope, you will get there.- Unknown

Present time. The Year 2019

I toyed with the night lights of my pack house office, first pressing the switch on button on the remote and then shutting them off after few seconds, watching the room flicker between brightness and darkness simultaneously.

I spun my chair in slow steady circles, my head resting on the headrest and my eyes closed so that I can squeeze in 2-3 hours of sleep after working the whole day. I wish I could say that after working 18 hours per day, I succumb to darkness as soon as I hit the bed. But that is a far dream.

One that seems very much unattainable now after all these years of going through the same schedule. I am practically insomniac barely managing to sleep for a maximum of 3 hours on a good day.

But today my brain is refusing to give in even for a few minutes. So, here I am, at 2 am in the morning, lying wide awake in my office chair which more than often serves the purpose of bed too, surrounded by darkness and loneliness I had become accustomed to.

I can hear the raindrops falling against the glass wall which gives a picturesque scene of the whole pack. Cadman Pack. My ma's former pack. My grandfather, Lorenzo Cadman, from my ma's side was looking for me ever since he had heard about his only daughter's death along with her mate and son.

He looked right past Theodore's lies and started searching for me when he found out through his sources that I was kicked out of the pack. He put his best investigators and pack members in place and finally found me 4 years ago. I still remember the day as if it had happened yesterday.

After completing my 3 hours shift in a local automobile repair shop, finishing looking through all my assigned vehicles for the day, I rushed off to college as I realized that my class was going to start in 15 minutes top.

Thanks to my werewolf speed I weaved my way through the heavy traffic with ease. Aside from the pounding headache that was caused by those horn blaring vehicles on the way.

It was my final year of post-graduation, after this, I will have my MBA degree along with specialization in Aeronautical engineering.

Aeronautics is something which always gravitated my attention towards it and MBA is necessary to accomplish my goals, my revenge.

That's the only thought circulating in my head throughout the day, the only one which has forced me to survive so far, for which I have worked my ass off, shedding my blood and sweat, overlooking the difference between day and night or right and wrong.

For which I have faced all the harshness of circumstances and viciousness of life making us, me and my wolf, more vicious than the life itself.

Walking through the corridors, I looked at my surroundings to shake off those thoughts for now. The corridors were vacant and bare except for some occasional 'human bad boys' bunking classes because they were nothing but too confused about what to do with their future.

I opened the door to the lecture hall and started walking down the aisle filled with mostly humans looking for a vacant seat. I placed my books on top of the desk and sat down on the chair beside a girl who was looking at me like I am a five-headed alien with a magician cap on one head shouting 'DUMBLEDORE' after every few seconds.

Or that might have been her expression for I want to eat you for dinner tonight judging by her sudden arousal which infiltrated my senses right then.

The professor entered and called my name,

"Aadolf, you are requested in the dean's office right now."

As I made my way towards the dean's office, I wondered about the reason for which I was called out of my damn lecture. It better be worth the extra trouble I would have to get through to get today's notes, a frown appearing instantly on my face at the thought.

As soon as I entered the facultative area, the receptionist told me to enter the office directly as the dean was already waiting for me.

I just raised an eyebrow at her in a questioning manner and opened his office gate wondering what might be so important after all. A werewolf scent hit me and my wolf raised his head in alarm and got ready to fight if being threatened.

It did not surprise me as I, myself too looked at the werewolf seated opposite to the dean in an assessing manner.

He had a powerful aura of an Alpha, so maybe he was here in regards to me being a rogue. It was an event that frequently occurred. I was used to different alphas paying me a visit whenever I went into their territories on college campaigns and trips. They warned me of the "consequences" if I posed any trouble or how they could be my worst nightmare if I inflicted any harm to their pack.

Those threats barely meant anything to me as I had no intentions of causing any damage to anyone, yet. However, this visit surprised me a little as this college was one of the very few colleges present in neutral territory, the main reason why I chose this one for my degree.

So in my head, I was already working my way through all the reasons he could be here for, trying to find something plausible.

It looked like the alpha also caught my scent because I heard him sniffing the air. As he turned around, my breath got caught in my throat leaving me gaping at him, too shocked to breathe.

The familiarity of his eyes caused me to stumble a step back as I was nowhere expecting this surprise.

I locked gazes with his icy blue ones, the color so familiar, so close to my now frozen heart. The same color as my ma.

The same color I once had too. My eyes were now tinged with yellow flecks because of equal dominance of my wolf. Most rogues' wolf usually became too dominant for them to handle.

Wolves are pack creatures hence they succumb to madness on having to face pack less life for long. However, I was in perfect harmony with my wolf because both of us shared the same goal of seeking revenge from Evans pack and their Alpha.

And that one thing mattered most to us, even more than the urge to go wild, more than the urge to submit to madness.

It was what we craved, what kept us going through all the odds, forcing us to survive by whispering to ourselves, 'Not yet', over and over again.

My wolf snarled at the thought of them, Evans pack, and I got lost in the thoughts of how far away I still was from my aim. So very far away.

Sound of someone clearing their throat made me snap out of my hazy thoughts, making me look up suddenly at the intruder of my thoughts. I stared at the dean who looked quite uncomfortable and fidgety standing by his chair.

Though he was a human, he could still sense the strong aura radiating from two alpha blood standing in his office by his side. I guess he could feel the thick tension pulsating between us, hitting higher notes with each passing second.

Sweat broke down on his face, and I smirked thinking how oblivious and weak humans truly are. They are pesky creatures who liked to live in the false feeling of security and on the first sign of trouble, shut their eyes like an oblivious pigeon. I found that particularly amusing.

" I will give you two the privacy to talk things through. You, gentlemen, look like you have important matters to discuss. You can take as much time you want, there is absolutely no rush. I will make sure no one interrupts or disturb you guys."

He muttered, stumbling on his words frequently, barely managing to finish them without passing out, the stench of fear and nerves thick in the air. As soon as he finished, he rushed out of the office as if he was seconds away from peeing his pants.

As I once again laid my eyes on Lorenzo Cadman, my grandfather from my mother's side, I already found his eyes on me, observing me, assessing me all over. I can't complain since I was doing the same to him. Just returning the favors.

I don't remember much about him as I never saw him much in my childhood, just 2-3 times when he visited my ma.

He was a very serious person who only concerned himself with work or important matters rather than play or trivialities. He had lost his mate, Alexa Cadman, in a rogue attack when my ma was very young.

Since then, he had focused all his attention on his pack and daughter, Alexandria Cadman, who was named after his beloved mate. He loved her, my ma, very much.

I still remember the way his gaze used to soften a little bit just at the sight of her.

Now, as I stared into his eyes, they almost looked lifeless giving nothing away of what was going on inside his head, his expression void of any emotions. I could tell that it was the look he had been sporting for quite a while now.

Though he looked old and emotionless, I could sense the awareness of surroundings in his gaze, alertness of his wolf. Judging by the hard unforgiving glint in his eyes, he sure was a force to be reckoned.

"It's about time I finally found you." He said with a loud sigh, an exhaled breath as if the thought meant something vital to him.

His eyes were still not giving away anything. I stared at him, waiting for him to continue, wanting to know the reason due to which he was here.

I was sure that there was something he desired. Something I had no idea of. I didn't trust him, not at all. I never trusted anyone. Sure, he loved my ma but that doesn't mean he harbors same feelings for me too. I had learned it the hard way.

I didn't know what to say so I just remained silent, my wolf peering up at him in an almost curious way. There was an uncomfortable silence in which he kept looking at me. He was waiting for my reaction to him being here.

When he realized I wasn't going to say anything, he simply handed me a piece of paper that looked like it was years old and had been opened at least a million times.

The paper's condition was shabby and it looked like it might fall apart if opened one more time. I opened it carefully, flinching back at the handwriting, causing me to take a step back as though to shield me from the letter.

Though the words had faded a little bit over the years and looked messy as if written in a rush, the slopes of words were still familiar, almost nostalgic.

"Something big and drastic is going to happen, Dad. I am trying my best but am afraid there is not enough time left. Please, save Aadolf. Help him, protect him, my baby is going to need you. I love you forever"

The words caused me to stagger a few steps back. They were her words. Her last words. The letter started a roller coaster of emotions inside me, each whirling higher than the last one.

I could feel the sharp jolt of pain that struck my heart hard, knocking out my breath.

The confusion whether she knew what was happening, what would happen in the future. If so, why didn't she run away?

The helplessness that had always been etched deep in my mind, emerging out, hundred times greater than ever before, of not being any worth, of not helping her when she needed me, of not saving her.

Then, the hot white blinding rage. So much anger at those responsible for this fate. The ones who destroyed my happiness, my life and took away hers. They will pay a much higher price. I will make sure of that.

"By the time I got this letter and rushed there, it was already too late. My angel, my Alexandria, was no more and you were nowhere to be found. I failed her. And even more so, I failed you. I have been looking for you ever since then."

His eyes showed a mixture of emotions, agony over losing his only child, regret over not being able to do anything to stop that and finally the pent up frustration and suppressed need of revenge for his daughter. All that could be reflected back in mine.

We were two strangers, connected through her, who loved her dearly, who lost the greatest and most wonderful thing in their lives, the meaning of it and who would stop at nothing to avenge her.

He balled his fists as if replaying the day over in his head.

I kept my face blank and eyes void of any emotion and asked,
"Why are you here, now?"

I had to know his intentions. Though he was my grandfather, I have stopped trusting anyone long ago. I simply had no interest in rekindling any relation with anyone, my goal was simple. I would avenge her my self. I didn't need anyone's help.

The hard and unforgiving glint in his eyes reappeared. He had a plan and I wanted to know about it. Color me curious.

"I want you to overtake Cadman pack as Alpha---"

I interrupted him mid-sentence "I don't want to." The very idea was impractical, illogical and outrageous. The mere thought of belonging in a pack sent shivers dancing down my spine. It was an absolute no. He had to have few loose screws in his head to propose something like this.

He assessed me for a few minutes and said,
"You are just like your mother, impulsive on a whole new level but you need to think with a rational and logical mind right now. I know trusting people is going to hard for you. I understand that you want to avenge your maa and being an alpha will be an obstacle in your goal for now.

Though it will set-off whatever plan you have right now, it will also help you in the long run. It will help you, help you live your life, help you to have focus and support, help you to have a clear vendetta."

He looked at me, still waiting for my reaction, for any change in my facial expression. When he didn't find any, he continued,

"Just remember that the divine wrath is slow indeed in vengeance, but it makes up for its tardiness by the severity of the punishment.
And whether you believe it or not, your wolf needs this."
