Chapter 7
Have you ever looked at someone to try to guess what’s on their minds but couldn’t in the end? Because that is me right now. How could someone just randomly appear in front of your house and then offer you food? And mind you, it’s 11 in the evening.
Yuki looks more relaxed compared to earlier in the campus.
Well, we must not waste food, and I am craving some barbeque, so...
"Wait here, I’ll just change my clothes." I answered Yuki, and I saw his face slightly light up.
He nodded and crossed his arms.
"Go on, take your time."
I went back inside the house and went straight to my room to look for clothes I could wear.
I’m already in my pajamas ready to sleep, but here we are, suddenly going on an unplanned trip with someone.
I wore an over-sized shirt and sweatpants, and before going out, I also brought my hoodie. It’s cold outside for sure.
When Yuki saw me going out of the house, he opened the car door for me, so I went there and settled into my seat. I watched him walk on the other side to go to the driver’s seat.
I looked around inside his pick-up and I’m quite impressed because the interior of his car looks good and it’s clean.
I thought we were already going to leave, but I saw Yuki reaching for something in the back seat, so I looked at it and saw that it was a plastic bag he was reaching for.
"I don’t know the flavor you like, so I brought different flavors." He handed me the plastic bag full of ice cream. He smiled and started the engine and started driving.
I checked the plastic bag’s contents to see what flavors of ice cream he had bought. There are 8 different kinds of ice cream inside, but I smiled when I saw that there was a flavor I wanted.
Strawberry.
These ice creams will melt. I cannot eat them all. Even if we share them, how can we possibly finish them all in one sitting?
I opened the ice cream and started eating it. It is slightly softer now since it’s starting to melt already.
"By the way, where are we going?" I asked Yuki out of curiosity. He glanced at me for a brief moment before looking down the road again.
"Where do you want to go?" he asked back.
This is exactly what our professor is saying. Never answer a question with another question. But these moments are inevitable from time to time too, just like right now.
Where can we go? The night is beautiful since there are many stars in the sky and even the moon is shining bright right now.
I took a bite of my ice cream while thinking of a place to go. I want to go to a nearby beach, but it’s so late now.
"Just drive then." This is frustrating.
We passed by some quiet houses on our way, and when I saw an open sari-sari store, I told Yuki to stop for a moment.
I got out of the car and went to the store to buy some things we could eat. I don't think some pork barbeque and isaw (barbequed pork and chicken intestines) will be enough for us.
I bought some chips and cans of beer to match the food Yuki bought.
"How much?" I asked the little girl.
She’s in her pajamas already and is wearing a cute head band while pressing the buttons of the calculator.
"₱280 ($4.74) po."
I was about to get my wallet from my pocket, but it’s not there.
What do you mean it’s not there?!
"Uh, wait." I said to the little girl and smiled a little because she was staring at me waiting for the payment.
I searched for it in both my pockets, but my wallet is really not there!
Did I forget to bring it earlier?
I closed my eyes in frustration and looked back at the kid and at Yuki, who was still inside the car waiting for me. He’s staring blankly out the front, like he’s thinking deeply.
I guess I don’t have a choice.
"I’ll be back."
I walked back to the car and opened the passenger door.
"Yuki..."
I called him, but I think he’s thinking deeply. He didn’t even notice that I opened the door.
My eyebrows raised
What is he thinking deeply to be like this?
"Yuki…" I made my voice a little louder and I slightly tapped his shoulder to get his attention.
He was surprised by what I did.
"Oh sh– I’m sorry!"
"Uh no, no. Sorry, what were you saying earlier?" He shook his head and looked at me.
"Uh, can I perhaps borrow some money? I forgot my wallet... " I smiled awkwardly and scratched my head before looking away.
"How much?" Yuki took his wallet out.
"Just 280 pesos."
"Here." He smiled and gave me 300 pesos.
"Don’t worry, I’ll pay you back later! I just forgot my wallet at home! " I assured him, but he shook his head once again.
"No, it’s fine. Just consider it as an addition to my treat for you. "
I was going to disagree, but then I saw the kid looking at us, so I hurriedly went back to the sari-sari store to pay.
After paying, I went to the car and put the things I bought in the back seat where the inihaw are.
I saw Yuki looking at it before starting the engine again and driving.
We were engulfed by the deafening silence once again since no one wanted to initiate a conversation.
"Do you want the windows open?" he asked, out of the blue.
I looked outside and saw that it was kind of windy, so I nodded. When the windows are down, I put my hand outside.
Cliché as it may seem, it really feels nice to do this when you’re having a night drive. I leaned against the window and let my head rest there, closing my eyes to feel the cold, relaxing wind.
This is relaxing and helps clear your mind.
I looked at the man beside me who was driving with one hand. His left hand is currently fixing his hair that got disheveled because of the wind.
I smiled a little because of that.
I think Yuki noticed that someone was looking at him. That is why he looked in my direction, but before he could fully look in my direction, I shifted my gaze outside and pretended that I was looking at the stars outside.
Is this why people say that unplanned trips are the best ones?
