“Have…have any of the…the warlords showed up here?” I asked, he laughed a little
“Of course, mainly the eldest, though Glimmerstand exclusively calls him the Ocean Lord or Prince of Storms. We have multiple oceans and seas, sense his father is Leviathan…he has free access to even the bodies of water here, there are oceanic courts, but he is above all of them. It’s been rare that he’s shown up, at least a century or two sense he was here last, but the only reasons why I’ve heard are due to something being moved out of here or brought in that really shouldn’t be.”
“But the others, not so much?”
“I’m not familiar of any other instance of one of the others showing up, they probably have, but I cannot recall off the top of my head” he shrugged
“But you’re a librarian, no?” I asked
“Yes, but that doesn’t mean I have a search engine for a mind” he said making himself and me laugh a little. “And obviously sense I’m just a commoner, I’ve never met the Ocean Lord nor his husband, his husband whom we exclusively refer to as the Ice Bringer…he only really deals with Glacier.”
“I…read that name on the globe.”
“Glimmerstand is four major kingdoms and one minor, though the minor is a neutral area between the four and is the realms capital, where the Empress lives and her capital city. Blossom, Shore, Harvest and Glacier, these four kingdoms exist in a perpetual state of the associated season: spring for Blossom, summer for Shore, fall for here in Harvest and winter for Glacier.”
“What about the minor one?”
“Ah, Equilibrius” he said with a soft nod, “I’m sure you don’t want a lecture on the geo-political structure of Glimmerstand the first night you’re here though.” He sighed, “How are you feeling, I heard from Grandfather that you arrived ill”
“Better…Dahlia made some sort of tea or something that made me feel much better.”
“She’s always been a gifted healer and potion-maker” he said with a soft nod
“Was…the library the only reason why you chose to tether your tower here?” I asked, he shook his head
“No: this specific area of Hallowed Mire, yes…but growing up, we flew around Harvest a bit more than the other kingdoms, something about the weather and how we’re cats so we just…fit the culture a little bit better. I’ve always enjoyed the city more so than the others, Hallowed Mire is a bit quieter than the other capital cities here in Harvest.”
“That is quieter?” I asked motioning towards the windows
“Hallowed Mire is the smallest of the Harvest courts” he shrugged, “The Star Point is the biggest, then the Flame Light, then the Bronze Bridge and smallest is the Hallowed Mire.”
“This place makes where I grew up seem like a grain of sand on a beach” I whispered, “I think there was maybe ten people in my graduating high school class”
“There was one in mine” he shrugged
“Home-schooled”
“Oh, yeah” he said with a nod, “My college graduation however was about fifteen thousand”
“For just your class?”
“We are far larger in population than the mortal realm…we’re not as limited in outward growth and expansion as the mortal realm nor are we limited on resources. The fact all of the other planes are innately magical does help too.”
“Where…where did you go?”
“Well, there’s one major college for each kingdom, us extra-planar kids don’t go to your Paradise Academy, but we have heard of it, we function on a similar process that some people think your school based their structure on ours. There’s Bokorth Academy of Spells in Blossom, Kroumia School of the Arcane in Shore, Dreadselts Institute here in Harvest and Heamiams in Glacier. They’re in the main capital cities of course: Petalvale, Sun’s Gate, Autuminus and Frostgarden.”
“Must be popular if every kid of the kingdoms go there.”
“Oh excessively, people have tried to make more and there are some smaller ones, but they’re not really popular, we see them kind of how the mortal plane sees…what’s the word, community colleges. It’s not really as respected as it should be, but people will always choose to go to the major ones instead.”
“Paradise is like that too”
“How large was your Paradise class?”
“Oh, three-four thousand or so” I shrugged, “The youngest warlord, the half-archdemon, half-archangel one was a grade or two behind me, so…with them being there, there were many, many more people attending than usual…one of the others, I don’t remember who graduated maybe two years ahead of me too, so I never really knew any of them. It was…odd though, the year I graduated…something crazy was happening with the youngest warlord…the school like got attacked by some crazy people, not that anyone would have told me what was happening anyways”
“Ah yeah, the…Warlord Bond, no?”
“How do you know about that? The vast majority of the magical people on my plane are only really learning about it, we only started learning about it when the eldest found his and people started questioning why the warlords were being so active…and that was what two years ago or something.”
“An entire species of people, the warlords, their bloodline is cursed to find their soulmates who will be their greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses and they must prove their love for their bond by a trail of the world itself against them” he laughed, “if there is anything more us fey love it’s a good story, their stories are riveting to us, like a newly discovered book of fairytales or something. It’s a little difficult to find a fey who doesn’t enjoy a sappy love-story.”
