Ding.
Ding.
Huh? As I wiped the grogginess from my puffy eyes, I was met face to face with what appeared to be some sort of notification. As I looked around the floating rectangle, I wiped my eyes again, this time with more fervor. Nope still there. The bright screen was seemingly fixed in front of me, moving with my body as I cautiously made my way out of my bed. Making sure not to touch anything before I could properly read what it said. Taking a deep breath, I stretched out into the air. Opening my eyes once more I could now properly examine the text.
[A worldwide system update is now available. Would you like to update? (Failure to do so may result in reversion)]
What does it mean by a system update? What system? And what does it mean by reversion? Not wanting to find out the repercussions behind the ominously placed word I quickly tapped the yes button. Soon another screen popped up as quickly as the first had left.
[Welcome to Life Update 1.1. Download of stats and data will now begin… Phase 1: Conversion, Time remaining: 9 hours 32 minutes]
Suddenly I felt a strange coldness on my hands. Looking down, I was taken aback by what appeared to be glowing marks burrowing their way through the top layer of skin on both my right and left hands. Shaking them did nothing to stop the overwhelming cold, but soon the light died down, and with it the natural warmth returned. Looking back up at the notification message I noticed that the wording had been updated.
[Download of stats and data completed. Would you like to see your profile? Phase 1: Conversion, Time remaining: 9 hours 28 minutes]
A profile? Like in a video game? This is all starting to feel strangely familiar. I sighed and gently pressed the yes button once more. The notification was replaced with a screen of stats and information. A lot of it seemed to be locked for now, but at the very least I could see my base stats as well as what skills I was given to start.
[Player: Sel Gibbs Race: Human Class: MAGE Lvl: 1
STR: 6/10 DEX: 5/10
LCK: 2/10 CHR: 3/10
WIS: 4/10 INT: 7/10]
“For base stats it's not so bad, I at least started with above average strength and intelligence. My luck is shit, which sounds about right, but who needs luck when you have skill?” Moving on from stats I noticed my class assignment. Mage? Why would it default to Mage? Don’t I at least get some say in this? With my skills I should be a warrior… shouldn’t I? I decided to table the discussion of my class till later, instead looking for what skills I had been given.
[Skills: Observation (common) Lvl 1, Tackle (common) Lvl 1, Passive Learning (rare) Lvl 1]
Huh… So two skills which might be dependent on what base stats were higher, in my case its strength -> tackle, and intelligence -> observation, but what is this third skill? It says it's rare, so maybe everyone gets a random skill even if their base stats are dog shit… I wonder if… Suddenly a new screen appeared, layered on top of the previous, detailing what the Passive Learning skill was. According to the screen Passive Learning is a passive ability that allows its user to learn new skills and other information from simply watching or trying new things, it also gives a bonus exp boost towards skills that have already been acquired. Speaking of skills, it seemed as though I could only advance them to level 10 currently, much like everything else in my stat window. Closing out of the windows, I went back over to my computer and booted it up. Power’s still on, so whatever's going on hasn’t affected the grid yet. Wait… What if I’m the only one affected? What if this whole ‘Life Update’ business is just my bored-as-bricks brain finally pulling one over on me? Welp. Only one way to find out. I logged in to Holy Wars online. The server definitely seemed a lot less populated than usual. After the announcement for this weekend’s drop boosts I would have thought everyone would be on, the servers teeming with life, but instead it was almost as if my level 78 Holy Knight had wandered into a ghost town. It's a rare sight when NPCs outnumber players. Moving over to the chat function, I called up a group chat with the other guild members.
Seleth_: Anyone online?
Seleth_: ?
Tilda_Bear: I’m here.
Seleth_: Ok, do you know when everyone else is getting on? I really needed to ask you guys something.
UndeadMochi: Did some weird screen pop up for you two as well?
Seleth_: Yes!
Tilda_Bear: Yes…
So I’m not crazy. I sighed, leaning back in my chair.
